There's clearly some sort of mystery going on with Dirk that Jane understands and John is not privy to. That's fine! It makes sense, even. He's just going to catch his breath, still chuckling a little bit to himself, and head across the room to where he saw Dirk's shades skitter across the floor. That's something he can actually contribute to this interaction without just getting confused and shouting at Dirk!
