[Shiro's gear turns on while outdoors. On the beach. It's clear they're in the middle of a training session, with various members of his pokemon team sitting along a makeshift battlefield -- you know, the big rectangle with the circle in the middle. Made out of driftwood and seaweed.]

[And the entire gang is wearing the same mildly distressed expression.]

[Shiro, wielding the camera one-handed thanks to the sling on the other arm, slowly pans over to where his ... uh. Archen. Exists.]

Does... does anyone know if this guy is okay?

[Because the little bird-dinosaur sure doesn't really look like it. Its flailing is kicking up sand and bits of shells everywhere. Shiro's Litleo starts edging away from the other pokemon, eyes wide and ears slicked back.]

He's been acting like this since he hatched. We're all a little... concerned.

[WHY IS IT LIKE THIS, POKEMON WORLD.]

Come on, man. I'm getting flack for my name schemes...

[Archen keeps on cawing. It actually bounces a little. And trips over its own feet, landing face first in the sand.]

If you want help -- you can ask. Armin has, a couple times, and I have, too. That's... why one of mine is "Rick Batsley".

Oh -- Haunter named itself. It's been "Haunter" since it was a Gastly. [And also adamant that it is an "it".]

[god he's trying really hard not to raise an eyebrow over rick batsley and shiro's archen doing a perfect faceplant, but it's... really hard not to. especially since archeops responds with a loud caw of his own and does a hop-flail that knocks the pokegear right out of keith's hands. though the camera lands face down and shiro gets a close up of the dirt, it doesn't frankly take much imagination to guess at the expression on keith's face that matches the loud sigh.]

So? I'm not making fun of your name schemes.

[sheesh bruh, since when did two wrongs make a right, huh. he retrieves the gear, keeping the camera focused on buddy. still cawing and hopping around.]

Besides, even if I don't ask for help Romelle keeps trying to help anyway. You remember that egg Red gave me? She wanted to name that Litten "Flame Master."

[though privately he will acknowledge that it is not as bad as rick batsley.... ]

Wait Did you say your Gengar named itself? How'd it tell you that?

[Oh yeah, bud. They're on the same page there. These dinosaurs are something else, that's for sure. He settles down on the sand, while his own Pokemon try their best with his Archen, just patiently waiting for Keith to get his 'gear back.]

You could -- I get it from Armin a lot.

[But there's no ire in the words. By now it feels like old hat. An old back and forth between him and his younger friend.]

Hey, she's got a point. That's not a bad name for a Litten. It'd grow into it at least.

[He actually laughs a bit there.] And yeah, it did. I was trying to nickname it, and it took the 'gear away. When it gave it back, its name was Haunter.

[there is an immediate groan as soon as shiro voices approval over "flame master."]

Don't encourage her, Shiro. And why would I make fun of you naming some pokemon after the lions?

[the lions are pretty darn cool and they have significance, man. taking a deep breath, he gestures for buddy to come closer with his hand and gives its beak a couple of idle scratches while talking.]

I should do that next time. Just give my buddies the pokegear and see what they want to be called. Should've done something like that for the space wolf instead of letting everyone nickname him Kosmo.

You could. And if they can't type, ask one of them who can to translate. Blue and Haunter do it for some of mine.

[Speaking of Blue, the Gallade is cautiously poking the Archen. Only to squeak and dive out of the way as the dino-bird pops its head back out of the sand.]
