[Birthdays are important to some people. Especially when you've shared every single birthday with one other person for as long as you both can remember. That's why Soos has spent approximately all his remaining Pokédollars on a slightly-temporally-questionable party for Dipper and Mabel.]

[Set up on the beaches of Cherrygrove are a few cheap tables of food - sheet pizza and chips and trays of that salad nobody really likes, and Pecha Pit Cola, and later in the day, of course, a cake. More notable is the rented PokéPetting Zoo, featuring a large pen of rideable Skiddo, with smaller pens of Buneary, Tepig, Swinub, a few Seel, one Snorlax pulling double duty as a trampoline bean-bag chair, and, perhaps regrettably, a small swarm of Drifloon.]

[There haven't been invitations or anything, but the beach is hardly a private area, and the more the merrier, right?]

Dipper hoists his part of the net to make it easier to throw. Now to wait for the countdown.]

[And then he's tossing the net for all he's worth. Big buff arms, do your thing!]

[And on three Dipper throws his half. It's going, going, and has covered only a few of them.]

Yeah!

[Dipper's cheer of triumph is short lived as he nearly falls off the post, hanging onto it for dear life.]

Okay maybe this was a bad idea.

[Shiro throws his half, as well. It's a little more successful, considering he's bigger and has actual arm muscles.]

Be careful!

[Oh shush.

Dipper manages to hang on and carefully climb down.]

How many did we cover?

... Maybe five.

I threw it over a bunch of them.

[See, Dipper, you're not the only failure.]

We're gonna need a bigger net.

Or... just keeping a close eye on them might be easier, in the long run.

[So his tiny body could have been broken for no reason? No, he refuses.]

[Dipper. Are you tying their arms together.]

[What's your point? If you think that's weird, you've never seen gnomes assemble into something like a battle mech.]

And it doesn't seem wrong to just. Tie their arms together like that?

It's not like we have tape or tiny handcuffs. What else are we supposed to do?

Cut up the net. Use the ropes.

[You know, if they had knives.]

[That does sound like a much better idea.] I don't have a Pokemon with a move that can cut through them. Just teeth.

I don't either, but...

[This is when he makes a face, and holds up his metal hand.] This usually does the trick.

Be ready though. In case it catches fire.

[Dipper backs away just in case something dangerous happens.]

R-Right.

[Holding the net in human fingers, and keeping metal ones held together flat, like a sheet of steel, he looks down at it, clearly... waiting for something. Avoiding looking at Dipper for the time being.]

[And...]

[And nothing happens. There's no flood of purple light, no change in feeling, there's only a hand. It doesn't even feel warm.]

[Inside, there is a sinking and twisting and hopeful feeling all at once. The look of readiness turns into shock. He's just standing there, staring at it.]

... nothing... happened...?

[Sorry, Dipper, give him a second, he'll explain later.]

[He was hoping for something exiting.

Sorely disappointed.

Okay, take your time, Shiro. Dipper is as confused as you are.]

I don't -- I don't understand.

[He's mostly talking to himself at this point, but his Aron is looking back and forth between the humans. Apparently concerned.]

Nothing's happening.

[You might have to get his attention, Dipper. He's sort of wigging out.]

Uhm... You okay there, Shiro?

[Are you having some kind of crisis?]

... It's not... working.

It should be lighting up. But it's not.

[Yes, yes he is.]
