Day at the races!

The day is as lovely as you can expect any early spring day to be. You'll need a coat, yes, and there is a bit of a breeze, but the sun shines happily onto the wooden buildings that make up the Moo Moo Farms where we have all gathered today.

The various farm workers have worked hard to make their farm presentable to the public. Cheerful banners hang between the various sheds, stables and barns, which all have been given a bit of a cleaning (and perhaps a new coat of paint here and there). Of course, it is still a farm, so perhaps don't wear your very best shoes, but as far as farms go, it's been made as neat as can be.

And while the main draws of the day may be releasing the Miltank herd out onto the pasture again after a long winter inside -- whimsically called 'Cow Ballet' on the info sign -- and the Great Tauros Race, Moo Moo Farms has set up various little events and booths to entertain their guests, and perhaps teach them a thing or two about farm life.

A large information sign stands at the gate to the farm, letting visitors know what sort of events are taking place, as well as where and when these are happening. The two big ones -- the Miltank Ballet and the Tauros Race -- are spaced in such a way that people can easily attend both, and most of the other little events are available throughout the entire day.

The Miltank Ballet will be taking place at 1PM over by the big barn. There is little you can do to participate in this (unless you are a cow?), but if you want to watch some ecstatic Miltank dance through the mud and grass after a long winter inside, you should definitely come check this out.

The Tauros Race will start at 4PM (sign ups close at 3PM) and anyone who wants to help give the Tauros a good round of exercise is encouraged and welcome to sign up. There is, according to the sign, a small mystery prize to be won, but surely we are all here because we want to help some cooped up Tauros, right?

In addition to those two big events, two paddocks have been made ready where visitors can test themselves against a Bucking Bronco -- that's his name, Bronco the Bouffalant -- to see how long they can last in the saddle. Due to safety concerns, participants for this event will need to be 16+. For the children, there is a separate rodeo in which they can ride Vaquero the Dubwool, who, for all his seemingly wild behaviour, is actually a very well trained Dubwool who'll make sure no harm comes to the kids.

Of course, while people are free to bring their own food, the Moo Moo Farms have also set up a wide variety of booths where people can buy anything from fresh Moo Moo Milk and milkshakes to freshly made cheese and bread, and oh, is that apple pie? That most certainly is apple pie, as well as various other homey pastries. And as the day goes on, and people might start craving something a little less sweet and more filling, a booth opens up selling various curries. Don't worry, there won't be any Snorlax you need to share with this time!

And for anyone who has found themselves wanting and craving a bovine of their own after all these cute sights, you are in luck! Amidst the various booths, there is also one run by two cheery farm girls, advertising a sale on eggs! All the eggs that are normally available from the Moo Moo Farms can be bought at a whopping 50% discount. Mind that this is only on the purchase price of the egg itself. The price for any additional egg-moves remains the same.

There are also some other, smaller things set up, such a station where you can learn about milking a Miltank and a barrel where you can bob for apples, and even a horseshoe toss game. Most of these are definitely aimed towards teaching and entertaining little kids, but nobody will stop you if you decide to muscle past a row of Youngsters to claim the apple bobbing barrel.

Well, there's really only one way to find out, but considering how many forms Eevee can have, that's not a decision to make lightly. [And Mighty might also not want to evolve!]

[So far he hasn't seemed to, at least that Izuku can tell. But he also has only done minimal research into the methods of Eevee evolution.]

Most of them need items to happen, right?

That's right. You can trigger the evolution based on certain Stones. But a couple of them are based on happiness and how close you are as friends, and they can surprise you. I think...if you both wanted to wait it out and think harder about it, then you're best bet is to get an Everstone and let Mighty hold it. That will keep him from evolving before you're both ready.

An Everstone...that might be a good idea, actually.

[Mighty nods his head at that, even though he's still dripping wet. He doesn't know what he wants for his future, he just wants to have fun for the time being.]

Do you know where I can get one?

The department store in Goldenrod City always has them in stock! Things like evolutionary items are always available at the department stores. There's one out in Celadon City, too, if you ever head out that way, but Goldenrod's closest to here.

[Izuku looks relieved, mostly because he's not sure when Mighty would evolve if he suddenly started to...there's no set level for Eevee it seems, and he has no idea how one tracks "friendship" in Pokemon.]

My group and I are on our way towards Goldenrod, so I'll make sure to buy one while we'e there. I would say I could get some of those evolution items too just in case, but with the warps it probably won't be too hard to get back later.

That's true! Just make sure you use the Pokemon Center in every town and city so you don't miss one, and then you can get back to Goldenrod or anyplace whenever you like. Er, I don't think it works between regions, though...

[But it is very handy to have around! Especially if you just want to make a day trip out of something.]

I'll make sure to remember that. I guess it still doesn't cut out actually traveling to the place first, but it wouldn't be as fun if you could just snap your fingers and show up there.

No, it wouldn't - but if, say, you want to get to a specific location faster, it's really great in a pinch. I couldn't have done all my traveling last year if I hadn't used them to shorten the trips I needed to take.

I can imagine. Have you visited everywhere this place has to offer yet?

Oh, no, not everywhere. There's a couple places that are off-limits to folks who haven't completed their League challenge, and then a chain of islands that I just haven't gotten around to exploring...

[Ooh, off limits you say]

Are they off-limits because they're dangerous? Or...I guess, the Pokemon there must be, then.

Relatively speaking, yeah. The Pokemon there are supposed to be very, very strong, and since they're already unused to people, they likely don't want much to do with us, so they thrive in places where we are not.

I guess I would be pretty unhappy too if someone unfamiliar just came barging in on my home...

[Especially a trainer who may or may not be interested in capturing you and taking you away from said home.]

Yeah...but there are some who want to be challenged. The Indigo Plateau is probably the first sort of place like that you can encounter, when you go to fight the Elite Four, and the Pokemon all around there are quite powerful. I actually made friends with a Venusaur who decided to join me after we bested him, and now he likes to nap in my backyard.

I'd like to go there someday. I have...a lot of training before I'll get there, but I'm starting to catch up I think.

[Jane grins.] That's the spirit! Don't worry, you'll make it in no time so long as you stay focused. Though, I wouldn't recommend what I did to finish up the last half of sixteen badges...? I just sort of, erm, traveled at kind of a breakneck pace and barely rested, and even then it took a few months...

Because I have been here for a few years and kind of...neglected doing the badges thing for a while? It's...kind of a depressing story.

Well...I guess it's never too late to get started, even if it took you a couple years to get there. It's not a race or anything, right?

[Tell that to Izuku and Katsuki.]

Oh, no, of course not! It is definitely not a race, don't let anyone make you think that. I had just...spent way too much time waiting at home, and that's not healthy.

Yeah...I can see where that would be a problem. I have been enjoying the travel, even if it can be a little long and hectic at times. It's not really something I get to do all that much back home unless it's for school or an internship, you know?

Yeah, definitely. My Dad never let me used to go anywhere...though he did have good reasons, it was very stifling.

[...She misses him, though.]

I know how you feel. My mom can be really protective too...it took a lot just to convince her to let me start living at the dorms when that got enacted.

[It's different when it's your son living away from home versus your son living away from home while ALSO being targeted by criminals.]

Oh, geez, I can imagine. I think my Dad would find any and all ways to keep me from living on any sort of campus - societal norms be darned. It must be fun to live in a dorm, though!
