Beach fun for beach bums

Summary: Come to Cianwood today to celebrate the solstice, participate in a race and maybe even get a date??



June 21st. The solstice. The longest day of the year. Practically half the year gone already, which frankly, seems rather insane. It seems like only yesterday you were all fighting to save Christmas with Santa, and yet, that was almost six months ago! How can that be? We just don't know. Time is a force even more mysterious than pokemon evolution.

In any case, Cianwood has gone all out to make this solstice a great big celebration. The beach is awash with bright-coloured umbrellas and stands, selling everything a visitor might need to make this into one hell of a day (and, let's be real, also a lot of things you don't need, but hey, who doesn't want a nice souvenir?) Rental stands have everything from surfboards to huge inner tubes for rent for those who want to stay at the surface of the water, as well as snorkelling equipment for those who won't mind taking a peek below the surface. On a cleared stretch of beach, a small Sand Castle Contest is being organised. The prize won't be anything fancy (just a token little reward, really) but why not enter? Don't worry, there are separate prizes for kids and adults. Meanwhile, large piles of wood have been stacked here and there, waiting for evening to fall so the bonfires can be lit.

One particular section of the beach is a riot of different smells, with various restaurants and other establishments having set up stands to sell you all the very best. It doesn't matter what you are in the mood for, because you won't have any trouble finding it here! Want some BBQ? It's there; several Sizzlepede keeping those coals nice and hot while the cooks chuck everything that can vaguely be chucked onto those grills. Would you rather cool down with some ice cream? No problem; just as long as you can actually make a choice from all those different flavours available. Has the summer sun put you in a fruit mood? Watermelons (whole and cut), strawberries, cherries, papaya -- it's too much to name!

Or do you maybe just want a drink? It's important to keep hydrated, you know! Juice, water, mocktails and cocktails, everything that you could possibly want to stave off the heat is there. There is even coffee and teas available for those who need their daily worship at the Church of Caffeine. Just don't overheat on them!

And, of course, there is the race.

It looks like the first-ever SEMPER race has drawn quite the crowd. And where there is a crowd, there are more souvenir stands. Why not buy a flag or two to cheer on your pokemon? Or maybe you should buy an 'I ran the SEMPER race and all I got was this lousy t-shirt' for your pokemon to commemorate the occasion. They sell them in all sorts of sizes.

And then there is that mystery section of beach, currently cordoned off with ropes and screens. Signs let everybody know that this is where the Helping Hand auction will be taking place later tonight, but if you had hoped to get an early peek at the decorations or items up for auction, you will be sorely disappointed. Be patient and wait like everybody else is.

So come all and enjoy the beach. Participate in a race maybe, and pull your wallets for tonight's charity event. After all, who knows when disaster might strike again? Better enjoy things while you can!

"Some cannot get enough of the place," Dimitri chuckles, forcing his hand to stay still - or rather, both Vivillon teaming up on his hand to force it to stay still as they get every bit of watermelon that they can. "We have gone there multiple times. Still, sometimes once is enough, or the visits sparing.

"Are you a breeder of some sort then, Leonardo?"

"Oh, no. I merely intend to capture pokemon with my drawings, not through battle."

"Of course." Dimitri smiles fondly. "This sort of place really is a haven for a creative mind, isn't it?"

"There are so many creatures here that I have never seen before. And all kinds of devices, too."

[nastyboy]

"Oh, absolutely. There are so many new things here that I never cease to be surprised and fascinated by them." Dimitri leans back in his seat a bit, smiling. "What devices are there that intrigue you the most?"

"The way pokeballs can collapse so easily to a smaller size is particularly fascinating. It is not easy to make something with that effect, even if one were to hollow out an apricorn to see what's inside."

"That's true..." Dimitri lets his Vivillon crawl off of him, the pair picking at the watermelon that's still left. "I didn't think about it too hard since there was so much to focus on, but it is a peculiar mechanic. It moves so smoothly as well, doesn't it?"

"Yes! The smoothness of the motion is difficult to replicate. And then there is the matter of capturing pokemon which are almost universally much larger in size, while keeping them comfortable within the ball's confines."

Of course - one of the most notable things about Pokeballs, their ability to keep such enormous creatures contained. Dimitri tilts his head to the side. "When I first arrived, I simply thought it was magic, and thought little of it. Then, as I adjusted, and saw the pure scope of technology, I simply thought it was that. After all, I do not understand how electricity works. Still, these are reasons why I am not a scholar of any sort. I am ill suited to such things."

He is but a simple jock.

"To be completely honest, electricity is something of a mystery to me as well."

Has that stopped him from doing experiments to learn more? Heck no.

There is something reassuring about hearing that a brilliant and intelligent man is as confused as he is about this sort of thing, and Dimitri smiles.

"I am sure the danger involved in it makes it difficult to safely investigate as well, doesn't it?"

"The real challenge is measuring it once it's been generated, as it is invisible to the eye."

"I see..." As the Vivillon slowly crawl off of his arm and onto the table, Dimitri gives his hand a little shake to clear it of watermelon juice. "Then, if you cannot see it, maybe hear- no, I suppose that makes no sense. But there has to be some alternate way of measuring it..."

"Hearing is not a bad suggestion, really. And sometimes an electric charge can produce a particular humming sound." Leonardo gives his Staravia a few feather scritches. "But the best way of measuring it I have found so far is to see if the charge is capable of attracting a magnet. The two forces appear to be linked in some way."

"Oh!" Magnets! Dimitri knows what magnets are, mostly in the form of the novelty ones they have on their fridge in Olivine. Sylvain deserves nice souvenirs like that, even if Felix hates them. "I did not know magnets and electricity were connected."

"Neither did I, but it is easier to see these kinds of connections with the technology available in this place."

"True... Although I doubt I could understand most of them." This is the man who leaves most of his Gear knowledge to his rat, after all, and Dimitri chuckles. "Still, if you could show me sometime, I am sure it would be a fascinating experience."

"I'd be glad to give you a few demonstrations of a few of these concepts."

"I will look forward to it." Dimitri grins, wiping his hand against his swim sorts. They'll be fine, probably.
