video: mareanie troubles

[ the feed cuts in to jinx and razor, slowly entering what some may recognize as the entrance of middle segment of the temple. though there's sunbeams peaking through, it must be around sunset as they walk in, taking in everything with the awestruck eyes of children seeing something truly magical. a peculiarly colored phantump hugs jinx's shoulders as they walk, and something is clearly carrying the gear for them since both of their hands are free- given the slight weaving bob, probably something flying... but whatever it is, it's trying to keep the camera steady. while jinx is watching the way the light reflects off the walls, the way the walls are built and crystals glow, razor has taken to hitting one of the crystals with a wooden sword, testing it on multiple levels, as wolf boys are wont to do as they move further into the temple and one of the branching rooms. a midday lycanroc is at razor's feet, jumping up a bit to try and catch the light reflections on the walls, while a boltund hovers near a deerling as they wander. ]

It's beautiful in here- I'm glad I brought another camera... Freesia, careful, you don't want to bump into anything.

[ unfortunately, the childlike wonder is quickly cut in as something hits the camera-ribombee, drawing out surprised and defensive noises from the kids. unfortunately, it's not enough- viewers can see something quite literally getting the drop on both of them, the phantump crying out in surprise and shock, and purple-tipped blue spikes can be seen in the camera's edge, before the screen darkens and only a harsh "Get back here!" and rough barking can be heard- the feed cuts to static, with occasional bursts of blurry, half-covered instances of life once more- a troupe of mareanies fleeing, the sounds of dog pokemon, a ribombee and a phantump- not to mention their trainers- giving chase and fighting as they run, traps setting off, before the gear gets dropped, skidding to a halt before a toxapex.

after some time, the screen blinks to life again. jinx looks thoroughly annoyed, and both teenagers have clearly been running for a while now, not to mention whatever battle just occurred... the camera is closer, so the gear must be in her hands, but it's easy to see razor behind her, as well as an unimpressed shiny trevenant- did it evolve? it sure did. and it seems of the trouble makers, at least one has warmed up to it's would-be victims, sitting on razor's leg as they're relaxing on the floor after the battle, humming cheerfully as he pets it. it sure is venomous! and he sure does not care! all the pokemon seem pretty satisfied with themselves, otherwise- including the lanturn jinx is leaning against. the ribombee seems pretty peeved, though. ]

I can't believe we got jumped by a bunch of starfish.

[ Kirishima looks absolutely bemused, smiling uncertainly. For a second there, he'd been about to stage a rescue mission since his team did explore the aforementioned area somewhat. But then the feed came back and here he is, a bit ruffled. ]

This is the second time I've seen Jinx get ambushed by Pokemon... Though I guess it was just one last time.

Ugh- at least Stolas and Eisner both were well-behaved, if not a bit creepy. These guys managed to tear our bags off our shoulders and booked it. It was ridiculous!

( huff! she is too immaculate for this sort of treatment. freesia the ribombee is especially indignant about everything, to be honest. )

Were they after food or just having fun stealing your stuff?

( the camera moves just a bit as jinx holds up what looks like a silver pocket watch. there's a mermaid sitting on a rock etched onto the front of it. )

Considering I found this with them, I think they wanted some new 'treasure'. I'm not sure where the rest ran off to, but two of the mareanie are sticking around it looks like.

( sometimes a pokemon battle is a two-way job interview and razor and jinx both passed, to say the least. )

[Raphtalia looks carefully at the Lycanroc, feeling a bit afraid. Are there... are there dog Pokemon too? She doesn't want to meet them...]

A-are you all right?

[Dimitri was quite enjoying the video feed as it was - the view, yes, because it is a beautiful view like so many places in the temple, but mostly Jinx and Razor's wonder at it all. The young deserve to see beautiful things... to enjoy themselves.]

[And then they get jumped.]

[Dimitri is frantically pacing around the part of the temple he's currently in during this little broadcast, trying to figure out if he can even REMOTELY recognize that area, by the time Jinx speaks into the camera again.]

[He speaks immediately.]

Are you all right!?

( jinx is familiar with that look- she... actually didn't manage too well with pup either, initially. but razor has been her partner and friend since day one, and that meant pup too. so... yeah, she was forced to get over it pretty damn quickly.

jinx can only offer a reassuring smile, despite the initial annoyance with everything. )

Just caught off guard. They tried to rob us, and when we wouldn't give up, they lead us to their boss. Unfortunately for them, Stella is amazing.

A little roughed up, but like. Nothing that won't heal in a day.

( jinx. venomous starfish tore your backpacks off and neither of you are wearing long sleeves. frankly, they are lucky. still, aside from having run around the temple and thus get... exhausted, they really are no worse for wear, aside from... well okay several 17 pound starfish jumped on them, managed to pry their bags off and while they didn't sting, that still is a lot of fight! not to mention tripping, bumping into walls... the kids might be a bit bruised.

but again, venomous starfish. it really could be worse. )

Can't say I was expecting that, though...

[Hey so that sure escalated??]

Oh my god-- at least you guys are... I mean, at a glance, I would guess you're okay? Are you??

[Raphtalia just tries to avert her eyes from the dog Pokemon, focusing on Jinx instead.]

Oh, that's a relief. N-not that you got robbed, but that you're okay. Who is Stella?

[Dimitri does not know much about the venom of starfish, or Mareanie, but still... He can see how roughed up they all are, and he can't help but worry.]

Come back to the surface level - we can regroup with you there. I have some food that, while it cannot heal wounds, will at least make you feel some degree of better, I imagine.

A little roughed up, mostly annoyed.

( well. she's annoyed. razor is happy with his new friend. )

We're gonna head back soon, it was just... a lot, I think? oh i hope we don't get lost-

( jinx shifts ever so slightly where she's sitting, letting the giant anglerfish move a bit more into frame with a hazy fish smile and a call through the temple to say hello. )

This is Stella! She's a lanturn- a water and electric type pokémon. I figured there might be trouble in the temple, so I brought her along.

Alright. I think after all that I'm gonna take a freakin' nap...

( is she pouting? she's definitely pouting a bit. but a second mareanie is approaching from behind- not to attack, but almost timidly? jinx is none the wiser. )

[Dimitri smiles a little bit at Jinx's sulking; it is an endearing and youthful trait to see.]

I think you will have deserved it. I do not have any blankets with me, but...

[Before he can propose an alternative, however, he spots what's coming up from behind Jinx, and the camera jolts in his hand.]

Behind you!

Oh! She's pretty! Hello Stella!

[Raphtalia gives a little wave. She's honestly never seen anything like a lanturn before.]

I'm still learning about the different types of Pokemon...

( if dimitri's camera jolts, jinx's is almost wound back for a pitch- but it stops, and she seems to freeze before the view point moves again. dimitri can't see much, which probably doesn't help things at all, but he can at least hear soft conversation before... )

... Fine, you can come too. But we're going to work on your ambush skills. Such as 'who not to pick a fight with'. maybe some manners, too...

( finally, the camera's back to normal, and the timid mareanie seems much happier now. )

Thanks, Dimitri. It- he didn't want a fight, or anything. Just to come along. Guess we impressed him.

It can be a lot to take in all at once- especially if you're used to similar but different things.

( stella, for what it's worth, is delighted to be included in the conversation. hello, small child. )

[There is a certain kind of terror, sometimes, in speaking through the network. It is incredibly convenient, of course, and helps a great deal in making one not feel as lonely.]

[And yet... It is not truly like speaking to a person in person. No touch. No ability to help them.]

[Dimitri holds his breath, feeling slightly sick from the way the camera jerks around. He's waiting to here all sorts of disaster, just like before... So it's a relief when Jinx reorients the Gear.]

I see... That is good, then. Honestly, he almost seems like a child, in that case...

Well... glad it's no worse than that, anyway.

Yeah, heading back after something like that sounds like a good plan... [That bit about getting lost has him a little worried, though.] Did you get turned around in the, uh, attack?

( for all her justified crankiness, that... gives her noticeable pause. a child... and a thief, huh? after a moment, she sighs. )

Yeah, I can see that... ... Someone once told me it's important to be the person you needed when you were a child. So, he's staying.

Not quite- but this place is kind of like a maze, almost? I'm not sure we'll be able to fully recreate the way we took from memory, since we were going so fast...

( and neither amalthea nor gemini were with them. ... would teleport even work with the both of them, though? ugh. )

[Listen... Razor likes to wear gloves. Petting venomous things is okay, probably.

... It would probably be more okay if they covered all the fingers, but it's fine. He'll just shake his hand as if he'd only touched a hot stove.

At Jinx's statement to the network, he and his new friend perk up.]

They are... starfish? 'Mons are different from animals, but this one... very different.

Well- I think so? The PokéDex refers to them as the Brutal Star pokémon, and they resemble a type of starfish I've seen back home- it's called the crown-of-thorns starfish. So, unless given reason not to, I'm gonna assume they are.

( note to self though: take a better look at his hands later, when they get back to the surface. jinx takes another look at his particular new friend, and then the one who approached her- )

Couple of troublemakers, both of you. Honestly...

[As for Razor and his own Mareanie, they both cock their heads at Jinx and give her The Eyes.

This one learns fast. Razor might have to name it Mini-Me.]

[Even if it doesn't work on Jinx, Razor will gladly resume patting its sweet little spiky head... Poor Mareanie! The only meanie here is Jinx...

( ... you little shit. she's part of the two in charge, here! AND she makes the treats! )

You're too soft on them, Razor. ( sighs, if she's gotta be the bad guy, though... ) But yeah, that's the common starfish shape. It's how they got their name.

We should try and head back, but if you wanna look around, there might be something cool around? I found something myself, actually.

Animals, or 'mons, are not bad. They don't know good or bad.

[He is firm on this stance, though everyone else can believe what they like... Regardless, Razor won't hold little things like grand larceny against a cute little starfish. Instead, he nods to the little creature and stands up to get going.]

They do know 'being rude' though.

( at this point, she's at least smiling- so she's not completely serious. but he can't disagree with that after some of the shit their various pokémon have pulled. topaz likes to jumpscare people when there's sand to burrow in and dawn's... everything. god that little hellhound loves to cause problems on purpose. )

I found a music box, actually... come here, take a look.

( and as she beckons him a bit closer before holding out what looks like a pocket watch and winding it... and letting it pop open and play for them. her own mareanie is absolutely starry-eyed at the song, as haunting as it is beautiful- it suits jinx, honestly. )

[He does come over, gladly. For the most part, Razor enjoys learning from Jinx. Especially about harmless little things like... watches that play music. He watches and listens as enamored as the little starfish.

After it's over, he stoops to look at it from other angles. It's a mechanical contraption, he understands as much, but its function is still completely foreign to him.]

How does a little metal piece sing?

On the inside is a small tube with raised bumps in it. When you wind the dial, it turns the tube around, and when you let go the tube moves slowly to get back to where it's supposed to be. As it moves, a metal comb close by will pluck at the raised pieces and ... or at least, that's how the ones I've seen are.

( if it wasn't such an old little treasure, she might be tempted to try to take it apart to see- but. well. it's old and probably one of a kind? she ain't touchin' it, especially when she's not exactly a tinkerer. but she loves getting to teach razor things, honestly. it's Nice. )

[Although it's surprisingly difficult for him to wrap his head around, Razor listens intently... but plucking something, he understands.]

Oh. It is like... a tiny lyre, then!

[Don't mind Mini-Me... Definitely not subtly reaching for the pocket watch... Nope...]

[It seems that he's said something that resonates with her... Well, it seems as though it's for a good thing, so he supposes there's no reason to be uncertain about it. Probably.]

It is good advice, although it takes a certain level of maturity to think back on what one truly needed during such years. [Dimitri manages a smile.] But you are still young yourself, Jinx. So we will be certain to have some of your favorite snacks with us, up here.

( aw, razor. why's her brother the best and also cutest? )

( ... looks at mini-me. .... smiles. tightens grip on the music box. )

Why don't you help Razor find something nice? I bet you'd be great for it.

Or a lot of awful things that shouldn't have happened happening. ( bluntly. ... she almost regrets it, but it's true. she knows exactly what she'd needed on at least a big picture level. but after a moment, she sighs. )

Yeah, we'll see you there. ... Want me to stay connected in case something else happens?

If... it would not be too much of a bother.

[It would certainly give him a little bit of reassurance, after all... Still, his brow furrows a bit.]

Although I suppose I could not truly help you.

It's not, I don't mind. ... And if something goes wrong, I'd rather someone know right away. We're in the middle section, for what it's worth.

The middle section... That area is not too difficult to traverse. [It's not like the deep dive required for the complete depths of the temple.] Then we will be sure to be ready in case anything happens.

( she almost says something else, but recovered quickly. it should go unnoticed. but the narration Knows. )

[Just... just in case it takes them a while to get out. Best to be prepared.]

Yeah, we had expected to spend a bit more time here but. Well. Things happen.

( sighs. she was really looking forward to seeing more, too. ... at least on their way out they could take their time, though. )

[You do not trust Mini-Me? A sweet and pure baby?

... Yeah, that's a good choice. It will slink off to one of the group's old stashes...

And of course, Razor will follow his new friend. He does wait to encourage Jinx along, too, though!]

You want them to bring me treasure? What for?

Well, it's nice to have something from a place you visit, especially when if seems like you'll only get to see it for a short time.

( she's lying through her teeth. but yeah, sure, she'll come along. glancing at her own mareanie, she pauses... what to name you. ...

... did mina ever say what she'd named her own? )

Oh! Something to remember... Okay. Sounds good.

[It is a very interesting place, even if most of the scents here are stale, and it's tight and enclosed... Not a lot of open space to run around. But exploring with Jinx has been fun! Razor seems to have a renewed appreciation for the temple as they meander down the halls.]

( jinx thinks for a moment- getting ambushed sucked, getting robbed sucked, and they didn't really have time to look around because they were giving chase. but... she smiles. )

Yeah. It's pretty. And not like anything I've seen before. Do you?

They sure do. [Be nice if things like wild Pokemon attacks could happen a little less often, but. Oh well.]

Oh, same. Dimitri's asked me to stay on the line so he can check on us, so if anything else comes up you guys will know.

( she's just hoping it doesn't turn out to be necessary. freesia is still being so good at holding the camera though, she's so proud of you free. )
