Then, once your family felt that you could manage well enough, you were sent to a school called Garreg Mach for a year. It was a monastery situated between all three countries of Fodlan, meant to be a place where the future rulers could make connections and hopefully continue periods of peace.
That latter purpose did not succeed.

It was similar, although there were some trade schools where you could send your child in order to better understand arithmetic and trade routes, although many had their children work with them in the business as soon as possible so that they could understand things from a more hands on perspective. If you were from a particularly prestigious merchant family, you might attend Garreg Mach as well.
For the average individual, however... They would normally be taught what the parents knew of reading and basic maths, inbetween what was seen as more valuable lessons off the family trade. Farming, ranching, carpentry, smithing... Whatever it was that helped the family keep food on their table.
For those fortunate enough, they could occasionally send their young to the church, where the priests there would watch over them along with teaching them reading and maths. That depended on the state of the church in their town or village, however.
