I can answer one of your questions without speculation, at least.

My husband has come and gone from this world multiple times now. Each time, according to him, he was returned to the very moment he came from with no memories of this place, as though he'd never been. They only returned when he himself returned to this world. So one can extrapolate yes, one would return to whatever state they were in.

Which is why some of us hope to remain here.
