Not that Sion seriously suspects Malva of ill intent--no more than any of the locals, anyway--but a manipulative liar tends to recognize potential for his own kind. The difference with Sion, of course, being that he's very genuinely a kindhearted person underneath any fronts he might put up out of necessity.
... Which is arguably terribly convenient, as being free to act more his true self without pretenses here tends to make it easier for others to underestimate him at first glance.
