Oh yes. I did find that part very amusing as well. I guess that it could be because they want to see how well one can strategize and play well with their Pokémon against those who have been doing this for a long time. Maybe that is why the gym leaders have specialized specific types in the various regions.

Yep, it is a smart idea to have dual type Pokémon to cover all bases and make sure that they can have a fighting chance. In fact, Carmen is a dual type as well along with some of my other Pokémon as well.
