Lyra isn't the only kleptomaniac bird to notice a stranger hanging around the house.

Kind of what happens when a house is full of bird Pokemon-- it's impossible to sneak up on.

But unlike Lyra, this watchful eye is neither glittery or bejeweled. This is because she prefers to hoard things rather than wear them, and also half the things she steals are for her shiny pink girlfriend compadre.

She makes up for not being visually striking in other ways, though.

As Darkness is about to find out.

There is little to no warning of what's about to happen aside from a gentle flutter-- something that could just as easily be a breeze in the turning leaves as another crow's wings. And then, in the branches directly behind the interloper, a car alarm starts blaring at top volume. The car alarm is coming from the throat of a scrappy-looking football-sized Murkrow, her yellow beak wide open.

The neighbors love Shark House.

The sound of a car alarm would startle any Pokemon, especially when it came from right behind them. Darkness shrieked and took off to get away from the source of the noise, gaining height and circling the property before fluttering down again. He had spotted Wren from the sky, narrowing his eyes. A guard? The sound it had made seemed like a warning, loud enough to draw plenty of attention.

This could be a problem in his mission.

He swooped down again, landing slightly above the other Murkow for a height advantage. He couldn't hide his unimpressed attitude from slipping into his speech. "That was quite the sound you produced. Do you greet all visitors who perch upon your doorstep with such a welcoming greeting or am I merely the lucky guest on whom you decided to test this?"

Poor Darkness.

The second you get huffy around Wren, you've basically doomed yourself.

The other Murkrow did not cease her siren call, but the mischievous glint in her eye definitely indicated that she was 100% pleased with herself for having pissed this stranger off.

Spreading her wings, she fluttered straight up onto the branch next to him (height advantage? SHE DON'T CARE), puffed up her feathers, and began to dance. And part of the unholy chorus of beeps and honks in her car alarm impression became a steady chant of BUTTS BUTTS BUTTS BUTTS.

Enjoy this... extremely discordant singing telegram, Darkness. You poor soul.

Darkness wasn't even sure what was happening anymore. Was this bird a bit...'special'? Dropped as an egg? Hit too many times with a Rock Throw?

Refusing to be intimidated he matched her posture, held his ground and, lacking her impressive array of calls, screeched back at her. If she wasn't going to reply to him like a reasonable Pokemon, he could answer her garbage with his own.

He wasn't interested in trying to 'outlast' this annoying bird and flutered to a different tree, feathers ruffled. He kept an eye on her, waiting to see if she persisted in being a pain in his beak before he could refocus on the Receiver. Walter would not be pleased if he knew he was distracted from the task at hand.

Special? Depends on your definition.

At the very least, she is nothing if not persistent.

Bobbing vigorously, she follows, landing on the opposite end of the branch he's on and advancing, a little more slowly this time. But just as loudly.

Of course, her motivation becomes somewhat clearer when the ongoing BUTTS chant turns into STRANGER STRANGER STRANGER STRANGER, HERE HERE HERE HERE.

You want her to stop, Darkness?

Give her a reason.

Darkness wanted to roll his eyes into the back of his head. No, not even that would be enough. He wanted to remove his eyes so he could roll them like dice for this bird.

With a spread of his wings and a flap to get her attention. "I am Darkness, overseer of the Receiver of Wisdom and no longer a stranger to you, Ms. Butts Butts Stranger Stranger!" She hadn't given him HER name after all. "I mean no harm or ill will upon your household. I am merely an observer, sent to monitor and protect one of the trainers who dwell here in the interest of a concerned party." Now please, if you could kindly shut the fuck up he would greatly appreciate it.

When he finally delivers the reason for being there, the other Murkrow's obnoxious chant-screaming trails off into a witchy cackle.

"That's all I wanted, you windbag!"

More cackling.

With a flutter, she hops up to the next branch above and then swings upside-down, dangling by her feet. Birds can't exactly grin, but if they could, she'd be doing it.

"Which trainer? They're all running around like Combuskens with their heads cut off lately!"

Definitely dropped as an egg. "The quiet one with brown hair. Henry Townshend. Are they not usually like this then?" For as long as he had been there they had been nervous with anxious energy. The sole exception was when he had visited Henry at the Pokemon centre, before he had that run-in with Walter that foggy morning.

Given that she was no longer screeching like an Exploud, Darkness turned his attention back to the windows, watching for activity.

"Fuck no!"

The word 'fuck' is croaked harshly in 'Human'.

"Is your concerned party the one that's got them so riled up? It's HILARIOUS, until you want to sleep! The one you're talking about has covered every single flat surface with those oily sticks that you light on fire, there's nowhere to perch!"

Darkness tilted his head, side-eying her. If he was human, he'd be unable to hold back a wide smirk. Honestly, it was kind of hilarious how these humans were so riled up about Walter. Walter was a strange human but mostly sad and lonely, as far as Darkness was concerned.

"Perhaps. It is amusing. My trainer only speaks praises of him, even after he was nearly killed by him, and sends me to act as protector and monitor as he knows Henry will not allow him close by." He spread his wings in a shrugging motion. "Such strange creatures they are! Why does he need so many? Does he enjoy their fire?"

Still upside-down the scruffy Murkrow begins to swing back and forth. She apparently is allergic to holding still. But at least she's not screeching anymore.

"Nearly killed? You mean Prince was telling the TRUTH?! I thought for sure he must've eaten some rotten Berries or something, Henry Human couldn't fight a Weedle without his Pokemon to help him!"

Oh, Wren.

How little you actually know about the trainers you live with.

Darkness clicked his beak, clearly unhappy with the topic. This was why he didn't approve of his trainer's 'interest' in this Henry person.

"He attempted to cave his head in, while my team-mate, a young Cubone, was huddled on my trainer's lap. Even in my pokeball I heard his wailing during their... 'meeting'." While Assumption was the more highly trained between them, Darkness was in fact the elder of Walter's starter Pokemon. As such, it was he and Doll who had to comfort Assumption in the aftermath and gently pry the full details of what had happened from the tearful creature.

"Yet the humans here perceive my trainer as the threat!" Darkness scoffed. Walter may have strange ideas about pain and suffering and how other people worked...but it seems he had a basis for his 'humans are cruel by nature' spiel.

"Well, if Henry Human's really flown the coop, that explains why everybody in this house got really weird and not-fun all of a sudden!"

If Darkness is looking for sympathy for poor Assumption, he probably won't find it in Wren. She's more interested in the fact that the quiet guy with the camera and the candles apparently went postal and tried to bash someone's skull open.

"Now that I think of it, maybe we shoulda seen this coming! It's always the quiet ones, I tell ya!"

Ah yes, a group that Wren herself can... definitely not be included in.

Does she even know how to be quiet...

[personal profile] 11121_assumption 2016-10-03 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Darkness couldn't disagree. Henry had seemed quiet and gentle...as did Walter. Henry's violent outburst was a far cry from Walter's disgusted speech about human evils but it was clear to him that both men had a coil of something within them, just as Walter's teachings dictated.

"Regardless. It is my duty to see that he doesn't fatally injure himself in his current state, as my trainer is as welcome here as a carnivore to an open meadow."

He kept his gaze on the house, settling where he was. Was this how his trainer felt when those chicks, the wild haired youth and the blonde with a torn dress, kept following him? But Walter was too...quiet to send them away.

"Do you mind? I would like to hear if the Receiver says anything relevant." Interestingly, he mutters 'Receiver' in human.

"Well you don't have to worry about THAT. All the other humans are treating him like a china figurine! They might be weird but they take care of their own."

She fluffed up, seemingly ignorant of Darkness's disdain. Or maybe she's completely aware of it and is just being obtuse on purpose. It's probably the latter.

"ALSO, he's asleep right now. So he won't be saying ANYTHING relevant. I mean, he talks in his sleep sometimes. I've heard him. It's HILARIOUS! But RELEVANT? HAHAHAHAHA!"
11121_assumption: (Simple Halo)

[personal profile] 11121_assumption 2016-10-21 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"If he speaks of my trainer, it is!" Sorry Wren but he really doesn't trust your ability to determine what's relevant or not.

Besides, I am ordered to comment on his status when I return. My trainer will not be interested to hear about you, fascinating as you are." And Wren truly is. It's amazing that a Chatot somehow disguised itself as a Murkrow. Very convincing. Until she opened her beak.

[personal profile] foolishwren 2016-10-24 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, lighten up! He doesn't talk about anything REAL! He does things like sit up, say 'Special delivery', and then flop back down again and not move for three hours! Why is your trainer so interested in him ANYWAY?"

Taking a hint is apparently something Wren forcibly expelled from her list of talents.

"He claims he is the 'Receiver of Wisdom'. Some kind of student I think, despite the power he has over my trainer." Darkness muttered. How did anyone live with this bird. His 'she is some kind of Chatot' theory gained more credence the longer had had to put up with her company.

"It hardly matters why my trainer cares for him so greatly. Only that I oversee him in my trainer's place."

Honestly? Maybe there was Chatot somewhere in her heritage.

It would explain a lot.

"Wo-o-ow. Your trainer needs a HOBBY."

Clearly Wren also needed a hobby. "It's not my place to judge my trainer." Even if he privately thought that Walter should cut all connections with this Receiver of Wisdom and avoid him at all costs.
