[an electronic voice with a bit of feedback follows -- because it's coming from the speaker on the Pokégear and being picked back up by the speaker]

Bzzzaaat! I'm tryin', dummy!! It's not easy!

[the boy grumbles, but this was probably as good as it was going to get] Ok, you can start recording.

ZzztZzztZzzzt!! I started recording 30 seconds ago! What do you think of that?

Zappy! [djlsakjdjd. Eren rubs his temples and then takes a breath, composing himself] Whatever.

Uh... Hi. My name is Eren. I don't... really use this thing very much. But I have a question that my friend Armin hasn't been able to answer.

[he digs in his bag and pulls out a badge that probably looks familiar to plenty of people]

I've had this thing for like... months, now. And when I got it, I was told it meant I could use a "hidden machine" called "Fly", which can in turn be used to ride Pokémon around in the air. Great. Now, I know it's called a "Hidden" machine, but how freakin' hidden is it?! We're almost all the way to Olivine City and we STILL haven't found it. It would be really useful to have.

Cianwood. Or Saffron. If you beat Chuck or Sabrina, they'll give it to you as one of the prizes. It's kind of a pain, and it doesn't make much sense, but that's how they arranged it, for some reason.

Or you can ask to borrow it from somebody who's got it. Since you've got that badge, you'll be able to use it.

I mean, if you ask around, there's probably somebody living in Olivine who's got it and who'd lend it to you. Hell, next time you're in Ecruteak, you could borrow it from Sion or me.

... I think Armin would get all pissy about that, honestly. Because we didn't earn it ourselves. And I guess he has a point about that.

Why is your Pokegear talking?

.... It has a pokémon called a rotom in it. Its name is Zappy.

HEYA NERD. This here Pokégear is real comfy and lets me talk to the humans! So I'm taking up residence here. Zzztzzzat!

[Noctis startles when he's addressed by the pokegear, looking a bit miffed for a moment.

It reminded him a bit of Carbuncle..how they communicated, at least.]

Right...are..is..Zappy the only pokemon that can do that sort of thing?

I think so? Rotom's whole thing is that is can possess electronic devices. They're electric and ghost type. [Eren shrugs] It's both good and bad. It's kind of like having a personal assistant, but one that has a mind of its own.

[Yep. Definitely sounds like Carbuncle.]

Sounds like it may be more hassle than it's worth...or at least more annoying than it's worth.

I'm not annoying!! I'm GREAT! SO GREAT! This idiot can't figure out how to use a pokégear properly and I know all its ins and outs, bzzaaat! So don't talk shit!

... He kind of has a point. This technology is way beyond anything we have where I come from. And whatever, it's not like I'm gonna kick him out. He's pretty strong sometimes I guess.

There's supposed to be something called the Safari zone a bit beyond that too.

[Naturally! No reason to talk long distance when your bestest bud is right there. Eren frowns, clearly pouting]

It's just so dumb. Why would they give us the pass to use this thing if we can't even GET it for months? It's stupid and makes no sense. [grump...] But I don't want to rush our island trip, either. I mean, we waited THIS long! [he throws up his hands in a show of frustration] What's a little longer.

Bzzzzat! Once you get to that tropical paradise, you'll forget all about it!! Trust me!

[Right there, living in your pocket, listening to your conversations, avoiding the plague carriers together.]

Maybe it was meant to motivate us. If they would've just given us the HM along with the badge, we wouldn't have had as much reason to go out and defeat the other gyms.

Though granted, it would've been helpful if they would've told us where to find it...

Or... reverse it. Give us the hidden machine and then later give us the pass to use it. You know? Have we found any of those at all?

No. I guess we could've asked Sion if we could borrow his but... it feels more rewarding to earn them ourselves.

Maybe while we are on the islands, we can keep our eyes open for good battle pokemon.

[Or, well, Eren can do that while Armin keeps his eyes open for amazing ocean monstrosities.]

Oh, I'm definitely gonna be catching some island Pokémon! I don't know what's there, but I bet there's something really cool. And-- oh! I totally forgot. I bought something while I was in town the other day... [Eren digs in his bag and pulls out a fairly nice digital camera] Look! I saved up a bunch of winnings and bought this. It takes photographs! Which are like... still images from the videos, right? Someone told me they were a great way to document your experiences and make memories. [Eren sits down, cross-legged, and fiddles with the camera]

[A pocket-Jean would probably be very loud and demanding.]

Really?

[Armin sets his book aside, planting his hands on the ground to lean over and inspect Eren's new camera, his head brushing along his. So far, Armin has mostly been documenting things through text and clumsy drawings --unless he got Jean to draw something for him-- but he never even thought about using something like this. It must be a camera like this that they used to take those amazing pictures that are in the atlas Eren gave him.]

It looks complicated. Was there a manual?

[pocket-Jeans are worthless. Jeans with pockets, on the other hand, are comfy and easy to wear.]

Yeah! It's cool, right? I've been messing with it a little. [he turns it on and flips through a few of the pictures. The very first is a picture of Eren and a young woman, surrounded by camera equipment and photographs on the walls. She must be the one who sold him the camera. The next few are black -- the lens cap was left on. Then there's some thumbs. Eren's surprised face. Finally, after ten or so shots, he seems to have figured it out. There's a picture of Hildegard with only a little bit of thumb in the way. Then his other pokémon... then a view of a town from a hill above it. He got better at taking pictures really fast] I did keep the manual, of course. If you wanna read it. But I got all the important bits... I can turn the camera off and on, I can turn the flash off and on, I can look at my pictures, I can zoom in and out... and the lady at the store said I could bring it in any time and have my photos printed out.

It's probably best to read the manual just in case.

[But, you know, that is Armin. He doesn't do much living on the edge. He'll also make sure Eren keeps that manual, even if he needs to put it with the rest of his books. Who knows. They might need it at some point.]
