...At the Beginning With You

By midnight, everyone is asleep.

It doesn’t matter whether or not sleep would normally come to them at night, or whether sleep would come to them at all; sated with food, fun, and good company, each of the moon’s visitors finds themselves drifting off before the great game clock in the sky would tick over to May 30th.

And so every one of them misses the vast earth-shaking below.

In fact, as they wake the next morning one by one safe in bed, they might be excused for thinking perhaps nothing happened at all, that the entire thing--a dance party on the moon, for Arceus’ sake!--was nothing but a vivid, bewildering dream, if hopefully a pleasant one. But then--is this their bed? What if they were on the road; when did they get inside? How did they get here? Where are their friends? Your character (and all their Pokémon and belongings) may find themselves dropped off right where they left, somewhere at least familiar to them, or in a city they haven’t yet been to--but they are all in Johto. At least they’re indoors and unharmed, but geez.

Still, it doesn’t stop there. As soon as they step outside, they’ll notice some structural damage to NPC-owned buildings, though interestingly, all player-owned structures seem to be safe. And the NPCs whisper worriedly amongst themselves, and to anyone who will listen, about the tense behavior of wild Pokémon--they’re disturbed, upset, wandering into the outskirts of cities as if driven from their homes.

And then the news reports start rolling in.

Almost every route on the map is blocked or damaged in some way. Pokémon are running rampant in the forests. Our intrepid heroes might be stuck where you are for a while, guys--unless they take some action.

SO HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Welcome to Victory Road’s first event: SHOCK-BLOCKED.

GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY IT’S ALL GONE TO H. E. DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS IN A HANDBASKET. Johto’s cities are functional, the urban infrastructure isn’t that damaged, you’re in no danger of exposure or starvation, but you’re pretty much stuck where you land until those roads get clear!

To clarify, you MAY wake up exactly where you were pre-Promageddon. And wherever you end up, you will have all your belongings and access to all your Pokémon (if it’s impractical to have them all running around with you, they’ll be in your PC Box, chillin’). But come on, even if you’re a homebody, nobody wants to be stuck.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Take your team and start digging! Or Flying, or Surfing, or whatever. There are trees to be Cut, walls to Rock Climb, and all manner of non-HM moves for which you can totally find creative, out-of-battle uses. How you deploy the resources at your disposal is up to you, but there are incentives both IC and OOC for helping out!

INCENTIVES?

Well, the IC incentives are, you know, being able to travel freely again and maybe some holla holla dollah.

The OOC incentives work like this: Anyone who turns in an “obstacle clear” thread/post/log unlocks a Building Request Slot. Say Anna and Elsa make the Ice Path safe for travel again. They make a post or do a log, or even thread it in Elsa’s inbox. Once the thread reaches AC length,, they link it to the “Between Mahogany Town and Blackthorn City” comment HERE ON THIS POST, and after the mods approve it, the players can turn in a request for, for example, the water park in Olivine that they’ve always wanted. The mods approve THAT and then everyone can look forward to more fun things to play with!

These buildings (or structures, or whatever! It doesn’t have to be a building, we are using “building” here to mean “a thing that someone’s gotta build”) will take some time, at the mods’ discretion, to go up, but they are for everyone. These shouldn’t be used to create a player business--you can always do those yourselves--but the sort of things a whole company is required to create. They will be NPC-run but may also provide job opportunities for player characters.

It is of course up to you to discuss with your fellow players what you want to request. Qualifying proofs REQUIRE more than one participant.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM?

We as mods will not be NPCing any Jennies or Pokémon during this plot, nor are we going to, like, police the boundaries of Pokémon science. Just do what you think is best and if we decide your solution doesn’t quite fix the problem, try, try again. You have all month--collaborate with others, pool your thinktanks!

ALL THE OBSTACLES WERE TAKEN, I DIDN’T GET TO CLEAR ONE!

If you clear 50% of Johto, we’ll open Kanto for repairs, too! IF YOU CLEAR KANTO AND JOHTO 100% BEFORE THE END OF THE MONTH, WE WILL MAKE SOMETHING THE HECK UP.

THIS IS A COOL MECHANIC, IS THIS THE ONLY TIME WE WILL GET TO EARN BUILDING SLOTS?

Why, thank you! But nah, this is one of the things Victory Road is going to be incorporating from now on.

OKAY. WITH EVERYTHING SO HECKED, HOW IS OUR TRAVEL IMPACTED?

With the roads in the condition they are, biking between cities is possible (at least until you hit the obstacles below), but ill-advised. The speed of Flying, Surfing, or otherwise riding a Pokémon is, however, unchanged. The ferries between Kanto and Johto and Olivine and Cianwood have been suspended, and the Magnet Train between Saffron and Goldenrod is also out of service. If your character has a home or business in Kanto and they’re worried about it, they may call their neighbors and/or send a Pokémon home through the PC system to maintain it until they can get back. A helpful Pokémon Center volunteer will handle the transfer.

Pokémon that know Teleport will find that their homing beacons, so to speak, have been scrambled; they can now only Teleport to the most recent Pokémon Center they have visited. However, every Pokémon Center now has two Warp Pads installed: one to the Pokémon Center in the previous town, and one to the next (see below). One can only USE these Warp Pads if they have already been to the city they’re trying to get to--that location data is keyed into the Trainer Card in their PokéGear--but it’ll be easy to travel backwards, at least.

The warp pad order is Cherrygrove ↔ Violet ↔ Azalea ↔ Goldenrod ↔ Ecruteak ↔ Olivine ↔ Cianwood ↔ Mahogany ↔ Blackthorn ↔ Cherrygrove. New Bark Town does not have a Pokémon Center, and non-urban Pokémon Centers are excluded from the chain. These Warp Pads are a permanent fixture and will be available for use past the end of this event.

The Pokémon League, recognizing the emergency, will cover room and board for anyone helping with the rebuilding/road-clearing/relief efforts. The Jennies are also accepting dispatch temps who can answer phones and help them organize relief squads. The position pays P650/hour, P700/hour for night shifts. There is no overtime nor are the hourly restrictions changed for minors.

The peaceful low-level Pokémon of Route 29 flee in a panic before a wild level 45(!) Donphan, who’s tearing up the scenery in fury and panic. It seems it’s fallen off the ledges that keep Route 45 separate from Route 29--and which are now keeping it separate from its babies.
