Contest Winners!

[It’s been a busy, fun filled weekend, but by late afternoon on Sunday it’s time for everyone to gather around the main stage and hear the results! The judges have been deliberating carefully behind closed doors ever since the last few entries wrapped up that morning, and as before they file out onto the stage, led by hosts Liz and Anne. This time, there's a face, veiled by silvery blond hair, among them that contest goers might recognize.]

[Liz taps her mic to quiet the audience, gesturing grandly.]

And it’s finally time for our results, so if you all want to hear who won, you’d better quiet down!

Especially seeing as how we have a VERY fancy guest judge here with us today, so I don’t want to hear any rowdy misbehavior from you lot!

That’s right, all the way from Alola... or the Sevii Islands, currently, is the esteemed Miss Lusamine, founder of the Aether Foundation! Some of you more observant types might have noticed the very subtle decorations all over the place-- yes, yes, those white ones with the pretty gold logo-- we were more than happy to bring the one who made this Contest possible with her generosity on board as a judge! After all, as anyone can see, she’s got very discerning fashion taste herself. Chic, even!

Unlike you and your bright orange jacket.

Oh, hush, I think it’s very smart. At any rate, if we don’t frighten her away, she’ll be doing us the honor of helping us announce our winners!

[Lusamine smiles politely, stepping delicately up to the microphone. Anne has to sidestep a few inches to avoid the hair, making a comical face as she does so. The audience chuckles, but falls silent fast as Lusamine begins to speak. Even with the microphone, her voice is light and airy.] It’s such an honor to have been invited here as a judge. Aether’s focus is, of course, on the care and welfare of wild Pokemon rather than contests, but even trained Pokemon could always use checking up on. And I do so love seeing beautiful creatures such as the ones shown this weekend. The Contest is a testament to how any Pokemon can shine when lavished with the love and attention it deserves. You should all be very proud.

[She isn’t as exuberant as Anne and Liz, but to be fair, it's hard to compete with that pair's chaotic energy. She seems friendly enough, though? Anne continues, not missing a beat.] Lovely words, lovely words. Without any further delay, we’ll get started on our announcements!

Starting with the Beauty category, an unusual species to enter but nonetheless an absolutely gorgeous performance, we have Diamond the Onix and trainer Mabel Pines!

Diamond certainly shone just like one after that Rock Polish, not to mention her precious young trainer!

[Lusamine nods, and the neutrally-polite smile actually broadens into a warm, wistful one.] As many might have guessed, "Beauty" is my personal favorite Contest Category... To bring out the hidden potential for beauty in such a Pokemon shows a unique heart and vision, when so many others would dismiss an Onix as nothing more than a pile of rocks. [She taps her chin with a long, elegant nail, smiling dotingly at Mabel and Diamond.] Perhaps when you’re older you’ll consider spending some time at the Foundation, hm?

[Liz gasps, leaning towards the mic with a hand cupped to her mouth in an exaggerated stage whisper.] Why, that sounds like a future job offer! Perhaps our Mabel can bring some of her signature color to those white uniforms!

[Lusamine’s smile gets a little thin at that joke, but she sounds just as gracious when she nods.] Hm, perhaps.

Perhaps indeed, and now let’s continue with our Cool category winner! A big lad with an equally big, chilly bite, Galliard the Tyrantrum and the trainer he’d protect with that bite, Bertolt Hoover! All that about large monsters from another world was terrifying, frankly! Glad you’re here with us instead, Bertolt, and with such a brave Pokemon at your side. Don’t you think, Miss Lusamine?

Of course, it’s much better for such a polite young man to live in a world where we need not worry about such things. [Lusamine shakes her head, frowning softly.] These other worlds are fascinating, and each beautiful in their own way, I'm sure, but I'm so very happy that you're safe here instead. And your Tyrantrum proved his mettle beautifully, a very dramatic performance.

Right, very deserving of being called cool...and the ice made it even cooler, I’d say.

That’s an awful one, Anne. Truly terrible. Continuing on before we here any more of those, it’s our Tough winner with an extremely tough name, Bruce Whalis the Wailmer and trainer Lance!

I’d watch the movie he was in, that’s for sure! I’ve never seen such a grizzled Wailmer. I could practically hear the five o'clock shadow and world-weary wisdom in that cry!

And such a good shot! None of those villains stood a chance. I wouldn't be surprised if the secret Jenny Special Ops-- don't laugh, we all know it exists-- were already scoping these two out for recruitment! Thoughts, Lusamine?

Ah... [Now that they're past the 'Beauty' category, it's clear that Lusamine is a little less enamored. But she's still smiling, even if it's now perhaps a little patronizing.] Yes, while I'm afraid such a rough-and-tumble aesthetic is not my personal cup of tea, it was certainly fitting of the Tough category. And of course there is much to be said about those who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty in the ongoing fight to protect the innocent. Very well done. [She claps softly.]

He certainly took that category with a bang! Congratulations! BUT, moving on! For our next category, we have our Clever contestant, who may be tiny but whose words were of huge importance, Glen the Joltik and his trainer-- why, is it? It is! The esteemed Aurora League Gym Leader, Ryner Lute!

Goodness, and to think some people are afraid of spiders! How could I be scared of such a well-spoken young man-- er, bug?

Very smart with his webs, too, I never would have thought of such a thing! Terrific, I'd say!

[Lusamine seems especially pleased with this entry, holding a hand over her heart and shaking her head fondly.] Like with the lovely Diamond from the "Beauty" round, this just goes to show that all Pokemon have potential, and how we must care for each and every one of them to the best of our abilities. Even the tiniest creature has volumes to say, if we'd only listen. A beautiful message.

Yes, well done, well done! I think we'll see no small number of trainers flooding the Collegiate Gym after a performance like that! And now for our final themed category, Cute! You know, Anne, after last time, I thought for sure we'd see another flood of cuties and the judges would wind up sobbing over the ballots for hours in the back out of indecision again!

Oh, same! But honestly, I think even if there had been others, I'm not sure there would've been a choice at all. That dance number really knocked me dead. The Aether paramedics had to revive me with those electric paddles.

I fully believe that wasn't even a SLIGHT exaggeration! Everyone, give it up for Baby the Eevee and her trainer, Lust! [To her credit, Liz does not fumble over the name.]

That precious little bundle of joy is a better dancer than I'll ever be.

Oh, I’m sure of that, Anne, I’ve seen your dancing.

I can’t even defend myself, honestly. The last time I danced, someone called the police. But what a delight to watch this fluffball, she would melt even the coldest of hearts with a glance, much less a dance. She just looked so happy! How could you not vote for that little face?

[Oddly enough, Lusamine doesn’t look like she’s fawning over it like the pair of hosts are, the smile on her face back to "polite neutral"... so maybe she’s not as “melted” herself.] Yes, it was very sweet, I must agree. And what I could see of her under all the ribbons was a well cared for Pokemon, with a wonderful connection to her trainer. Certainly well-coordinated, exquisitely choreographed. A shame it was the only entry in its category. I do hope that it doesn't feel like a hollow win. The sweet little thing deserves to feel proud.

Couldn't agree more, there was nothing hollow about that dance-- unless you count the space left in my chest after my heart got stolen!

[Liz's relentless positivity at least somewhat makes up for the lowkey awkwardness of Lusamine not being wild about something. She beams, rubbing her hands together gleefully. It's TIME.]

Are you all ready for the big one? The main event, the cream of the crop, the Best in Show winners? You’d better be, because we’re announcing them right now! Starting in third place, combining the best of two summer fun activities, water-gun fights and paintball, it's... drumroll, please! Oku the Octillery and her trainer Thida!

I was on the edge of my seat! What a show, and with just as much color as I like to see.

Hopefully everyone in the front row liked the color too, because I’m sure some of them are wearing it now. We certainly saw some very vibrant creativity from our youths this time around, didn't we, Lusamine?

[Uh oh. Lusamine is wearing that strained smile again. After her lukewarm response to the other Tough contestant who won a prize, the reaction to the act that resulted in ink-splatters all over trainer and Pokemon alike is clearly on the opposite end of the spectrum (no pun intended) from what Lusamine likes.]

Yes, it was a bit of a... messy performance, wasn’t it? But I suppose a little mess is to be expected from children. [A polite, tinkly laugh.] As a mother, all I can say is I certainly hope the young lady remembers to get in the bath later. Regardless, it was good to see that shine on the Octillery, and with a safe, natural method--care for the Pokemon’s safety should always be paramount in a contest such as this. Trainer-owned water-types getting dehydrated is such a common problem in the summertime, too.

Absolutely, absolutely-- keep the 'wet' in Water-types, everyone! Now, on to second place, which made me feel as though I were back in school, Polly the Sableye as the cleverest little student-- cleverer than I was at her age, that's for sure!-- and her trainer Stanford Pines!

Oh my, the same Stanford that won Third Place in the last Contest? That's what I call moving up in the world! Creative use of Mean Look, too-- wish I’d had that when I used to be called to the front! Such smarts-- and another under-appreciated species, I would think! We've had a lot of those this go-around!

[In stark contrast to the open enthusiasm of the two hosts, Lusamine's smile is even more strained than before. She has been getting and ignoring letters from Stanford Pines about space jellyfish for months.] ... An exceedingly clever Pokemon belonging to an equally clever trainer... one who clearly knows a great deal about mathematics and is fond of teaching. If only we were all such receptive students as Polly. [:) stopsendingmelettersstanfordpines.]

[Liz and Anne aren’t aware of the... history, and while they give her an odd glance each at the noticeably pointed politeness, they’re chalking it down to her maybe just not liking math very much, shrugging and continuing on. Because next is THE BIG ONE.]

And now, an even longer drumroll please, it’s at long last time to hear who our Grand Prize winner is! Back in January, it was a lovely and quite musical Alolan Ninetales who took the prize home for Beauty-- this time around couldn't be more different! Ladies and gentlement, put your hands together for a most tough and fierce performance by little Mad and her trainer Wrath!

I really hope that that little Deino doesn’t decide that she hates contest hosts as much as she hates the government!

Oh, don’t even say that, it’ll keep me up at night!

Everyone ought to be very nice to Wrath, or I’m sure they’ll be seeing those angry eyebrows coming for them soon after.

[Lusamine is still not looking entirely thrilled with this group of winners--two rowdy, messy children and the bane of her mailbox, rather than the more elegant and beautiful performers that she voted for-- but she’s not going to say anything about it. Even so, she can't hide a slight blanch as she looks over the pair of debris-covered, wardrobe-malfunctioning ragamuffins in first place.] What... loyalty she has for her trainer. The two of them suit one another perfectly, and that bond has carried them to victory. A small step on what is surely a long and exciting journey ahead. Although I must add for the audience, provoking a Pokemon to fury shouldn’t be done without care for your Pokemon’s wellbeing in mind, and never to one in the wild.

Oh goodness no, I imagine that wouldn’t end well for anyone. But Wrath and Mad seem to know what each other are all about, and congratulations to them both!

This has been Liz!

And Anne! Officially concluding the second Johto-Kanto Contest Spectacular! Winners may come to collect their prizes and trophies at the tables to the left of the stage! Big signs and balloons, can’t miss them-- oh look at them getting their trophies. What a happy sight! Oh-- oh, Mad's trying to eat hers. Bless her.

Thank you all for coming, and thank you to Aether for volunteering your services. We hope to see you all again next time-- who knows where we'll be?

Blackthorn, maybe?

Ooh, or Fuchsia!

Cianwood!

Maybe Cerulean-- oh, the lights are being shut off.

Show's over, ladies and gents!
