002 - Video

[A small Psyduck is playing with a Lillipup. Or trying to, anyway. The Lillipup in question is very determinedly napping, so mostly it's just a wobbly, unstable duck stumbling around trying to get the dog to do something. Occasionally it opens one eye and gives a half-hearted swat and wuffle in the duck's direction before turning over and going back to sleep. You're welcome, internet.]

So- stuff kind of popping out of nowhere, that's probably pretty usual for here, right? Cause it's either that or there's a really stealthy rogue running a really aggressive animal adoption campaign.

[Wouldn't be the weirdest thing he's encountered, honestly.]

I'm not complaining or anything, but, um- hang on, it'll be easier to just show it. Hey, Carver!

[The Psyduck perks up as Magnus calls, distracted from his attempts at playtime, and begins waddling over.]

Do the thing, Carver. Come on, like earlier- do it-

[Carver pauses for a second, briefly confused before catching on. It takes an awkward run forward, raising its tiny clawed paws, which glow brightly for an instant before it brings them down-]

Oh, shit, not at-!

[A flash and explosion briefly blind the camera.]

[A second later, when the picture returns, the Psyduck has fallen forward, with two deep gashes crossing the ground in front of it in an x-shape. The camera blurs for a second as Magnus moves forward to pick up his duck. Behold, a competent if thankfully misaimed Cross Chop.]

Okay. Okay! You're okay, you did good-

[There's a minute of fussing before the camera focuses properly again, on the damage to the ground.]

But- uh. Yeah. He can do that. I feel like that's kind of weird for something that's a couple weeks old? Can all the ducks here just do that?

[ The opening part of the feed was actually cute, in that harmless animals being animals around animals in a way that doesn't involve ingestion. Then it continues, and... Okay, so she hasn't seen that attack yet, but technically speaking: ]

All ducks of the same pokemon species, probably. Have you missed the foxes that breath fire or ice, or any of the other very strange things that pokemon do here? An... energy attack of some kind that has that much force behind it isn't so beyond belief.

I can see some of the logic, only I started off with a "dark" type which has yet to go around casting darkness or stealing light, so the whole system of how these things work started off being strange for me. He's bright white and has a single horn, which also doesn't seem to lend to the "dark" concept, whatever it may be. I realise it might not be so literal as a dark/light comparison, since I think it's fairy, bug, and fighting types who are most effective against them.

If things followed a more apparent logical process, that would have been nice.

Is bug really more mystifying than fighting? That sounds more like a personality trait than a label for a section of pokemon. Not to mention ghost is a type, and I don't know how to wrap my brain around ghosts laying ghost eggs to hatch even more ghosts.

Either way, nothing I'm reading has an answer other than "because this is how we understand things to be."

[ The worlds are eternally mysterious and big extended "I ATTACK THE DARKNESS" is beautiful. Beautiful. ]

Should save you headaches in the long-run. It only has to make sense here, and in the process thwart logic attached to wherever you're from.

You've noticed the ledges issue, right?

Oh my! That's incredible! [Jane applauds, very impressed.] It usually depends on the moves a Pokemon is born with, but...I suppose in Carver's case, no, it's not weird at all!

That'll get explode-y in time, I know from experience. Especially if your Gerblin doesn't have a handle on some of his powers...I know August had a lot of trouble adjusting when he gained another type, and that was with psychic stuff...

You'd be pretty amazed at what Pokemon can do when they're really young! Looks like he hatched with some pretty cool moves.

That's, um... [Angel looks either impressed or terrified. Or maybe both. That duck is way too cute to be doing that much damage.] That is something.

Is he okay? It seems like it took a lot out of him.

If you've purchased his egg from a breeder, he might have learned a few additional moves from his parents. But a few species do learn strong moves surprisingly early.
