[ Annie has damp hair she's wearing in a braid draped over her shoulder, sitting next to Krieg at a wood table, water glasses and what might be alcohol in frosted glasses before them. They're both facing the camera. Annie isn't smiling, but she's holding her one hand up making a victory sign in the least enthused manner ever. ]

Puck, just take the photograph already.

[ Krieg, bemasked as always although presumably?? Also drinking?? Is a little more into this whole photo session than Annie - he leans in next to his buddy and also flashes a victory sign...behind her head. Classic. ]

You gotta say "CHEESE", Honeyshine!

[ She starts frowning, eyes slanting to look askance up at him. ]

Why the hell would I shout cheese—

[ She's cut off as the sound of singing begins, a cupcake with a candle burning brightly in the middle being placed down in front of her. Puck shifts the camera to show the serving staff gathered behind the two diners, everyone smiling as brightly as the candle burns. Happy Birthday to you~ Annie is almost cut out of the frame, but what can still be seen of her face has her eyes going from blinking down at the cupcake, to wide open with the whites showing. What the legitimate fuck?! ]

Because when you say it you smile! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BIRTHDAY GIRL!!!!

[ The servers finish the song with a loud, “Happy 18th Birthday, Annie!” which anyone who knows she just turned 17, actually, might tip off about why she has a beer. Annie has hunched her shoulders, and the camera's starting to shake as Puck laughs silently. Annie gives Krieg a flat look, plucks the still burning candle out of the cupcake, and without a hitch in her movements, shoves the pretty, frosted cupcake into his masked face.

And blows out her candle. ]

Happy birthday yourself.

[ Krieg, his mask now caked in confectionery, just laughs. ]

PffffmnahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

[ The video ends as a small, barely there smile curls her lips up at the corners while he laughs and the servers look on in slightly distressed confusion. ]

[Yeah, that makes literally zero sense. What is context? Not something Annie cares about, apparently!

[Because he didn't get cold as easily on Pandora. But the force that strips people of any unique abilities didn't skip him, so now he has to wear sweaters when it's cold.]

I don't know if they found the cause of it yet, but no one was hurt. None of my Pokemon have been able to talk to them very well either, so I think they're still pretty shaken up about it.

[ the dreaded sweater weather strikes! Annie makes a small noise of agreement, tipping her head forward. ]

Spring does seem to be nice. Not that I'm sure these islands have much of a temperature change over the year.

[ the server returns with another cupcake, no candle. Annie nods to them, saying thank you because she's not actually an ingrate, even if this whole miniature cake thing seems not necessary... and yet delicious. ]

It is. Probably for most people where we're from. Meat ends up being a luxury.

Though here if it isn't fish it's also a mystery, at least it's edible and tastes good

[ she's clearly reviewing the links he's sent her, reaching out to brush her finger across the screen, her eyes narrowing as she reads. ]

Looks like I've missed out on some interesting things while out in the woods.

[ not that she sounds regretful. there's some curiosity, though with a quirk of her eyebrow, she meets the eye of the camera directly. ]

Sure would be nice if we could travel anywhere in this world. Seems like there's a lot more to see out there than we'll ever know. You said your Pokemon aren't having success talking with them?

[ broken trauma meters make these things a little harder to empathise with, though yes, crashing down from the sky does merit being shaken up for a while. ]

Not yet. I don't think they want to push them into talking too much though since I'm sure even something as big as Galli would be spooked for awhile, so... I can understand it a little, at least. Especially since they seem so young.

_{[He gives the little thing the tiniest of head pats, and it seems to cling harder to his sweater - but not in a bad way.]}

[ since this is all public, her point is more that she's largely unconcerned about being ultra informed: information, spying, that kind of intelligence is something she's not pursuing, and since uh... well. technically since parting ways with Marco and Jean having merited jail time, she's paid minimal attention to everyone. very unlike what she'd needed to do to survive for the years before, and really, only accomplished by disappearing into the forest.

she figures if anyone understands, he will. if there are important things, she wants to know, but this place isn't a life lived in a razors edge. ]

He eyes the cupcake when she offers to split it with him. It's a cupcake, and by definition, one complete mouthful for him. A half a cupcake would be half a mouthful, but he also knows birthday cakes are meant to be shared, so he'll accept her offer.]

[Krieg unhooks the hose and dangles it in the glass like a trunk to drink. Duh. Simple logic.]

Ah, it is that time again, isn't it? It feels like winter went by quick.

[He didn't get you anything for your birthday, Annie, because A, you wouldn't want it, and B, things are still Things.]

I have to say, it's been a while since we last spoke.

[Not that he was worried you had left this place. Oh no, he's definitely checking to make sure your name is still on that list of contacts in his gear. Don't be too flattered, it is mainly paranoia.]

[ it takes a bit for her to reply, staring down Puck for his antics and sighing to herself. though she does have better feelings toward the woman speaking: she doesn't think she's an idiot. (her standards, at times, are both low and strange.) ]

Should I be wishing you the same?

[ actually curious, since she's not fully clear if it's Korra's birthday... or someone else she knows. her grimace, however, is entirely due to experiencing this first hand unnecessary embarrassment. ]

A fact I'll remember for the future. It's at least easier to understand when friends make a big deal out of something like this.

[ because friends generally find reasons to express the fact they give a shit about each other being alive. she's witnessed that enough to believe it's generally true. ]

[ her smile is very dry, and very unlike what small smile krieg had pulled out of her earlier when she does finally respond. she's perversely glad he doesn't say happy birthday.

[ she sits back, leaving her gear propped up, and wipes her hand with a handkerchief. the wry smile is nowhere to be found, considering she feels she's said enough in being both dismissive and obtuse. ]

[There's a burst of snorting laughter from an unfamiliar girl, who despite not knowing Annie at all, seems to be getting a good kick out of this whole situation.]

[This thought brought to you by a combination of his shaky understanding of how non-fire types work, and also just based on his observations of how nature reacts when there's twenty thousand feet of snow on the ground.]

[But that might have to do more with the plane crash than the encroaching better weather.]

I dunno, maybe 15? You and Armin have both told me people in your world grow up fast though.

[At this point, their relationship can best be described as them warily circling around each other, neither necessarily aiming to start a fight but also lacking trust that the other won't, and in such a context, it doesn't seem like birthday wishes are appropriate. At best, they'd come out sounding compulsory rather than genuine.]

I don't think that is true. I've found many of our conversations enlightening.

[Definitely the few they've had here, in this world, but also the rare conversation they had back home. They had never talked much, not with how Annie had always kept everybody at a distance, but the few times they had all stood out in Armin's mind.]

Ha, yeah. Last year I got a not too happy reaction when I'd forgotten to mention it was coming to somebody close to me.... People like celebrating the people they care about.
