[Closed] 012 | Action | Ecruteak
Who: Kaneki Ken and Maka Albarn
Where: Ecruteak
When: August 18th
Summary: Kaneki finally has an encounter of his own with a ghost he never wanted to see again.
Rating: PG but also CW: for potential discussion of cannibalism
[Kaneki could consider himself lucky. He's seen the posts to the Network. He's probably even seen others already being followed by a spectre of someone long lost. He doesn't have that same element of surprise. As the days wear on and sightings become more frequent, Kaneki wonders if maybe he should stay at the hotel...but he's got Phantom out with him keeping things lit up, and Rikki is always on his shoulders with him.
It's fine. He's fine.
The best way to calm his nerves is with a book, so Kaneki decides to head to the library. He rounds the corner, knowing the new building is just around it, and he stops.
Standing there, as if waiting for him, is a young woman with deep lavender hair. She's got her hands clasped around a book that she holds in front of her. She's exactly as Kaneki remembers her so vividly from his nightmares...from everything. That white dress and bow in her hair that caught his attention in the first place. Her eyes are probably glowing white, but to Kaneki they seem to glimmer a blood red as his heart thuds painfully in his ears.
He forgets all about the ghosts. He forgets about the ones he's actually seen already. He just remembers the nightmares, his conversations about people from home coming here, the embrace she gave him before making her move.
The only thing that keeps Kaneki tethered and reminds him he's still in Johto, and not back in that vacant alley in the 20th Ward, is the sound of Phantom giving faint chimes of distress in his ear while Rikki's growls grow to a deafening roar.
Kaneki doesn't move, yet neither does Rize.]

It nags at Maka constantly while she's checking over her PC storage--something deep and unsettled in the pit of her stomach gnawing at her, clawing its way up to her chest.
Something's wrong.
How would she know that? She tries to ignore it, packing up and leaving the center. There's ghosts still hanging around, of course everything feels like it's wrong. Strange how that affects her so strongly even without her sixth sense.
Something's WRONG. The anxiety grips at her throat now, shocking a hitch in her breath. So something is wrong, Maka's instincts keep saying, what is it that's wrong? Why should...
...Where's Ken?
The natural answer is he would have gone to the library, but surely Maka can't just go and check on him there just because of a bad feeling, right? That's way too clingy, isn't it?
--Is this really the time to be worried about how you come off as one half of a relationship? What if he ran into a...]
[Maka hasn't been haunted outside of a few Pokemon trying to make mischief, she doesn't have anybody that she believes or knows is dead that has had significant impact on her life. But Kaneki does, doesn't he?
No more wondering, she has to get to the library now. Maka turns on her heel and bolts to the area, not knowing what exactly to expect yet still finding no answers when she catches sight of Kaneki frozen at the sight of...who? A woman, she doesn't look old enough to be his mother, she doesn't look like she'd be related to him either.
But there was a Ghoul who attacked him and died in the process.]
...[So that's her. The white eyes are a trademark of ghosts causing a ruckus, Maka knows she's not suddenly in the world by some horrific miracle. But Kaneki doesn't.] Ken. [She makes her presence known by voice before coming up to his side--mindful as always of Rikki engaging in overprotection mode.] Ken, she's not real.

For a long, tense moment, nobody moves. Nothing happens.
Then, when Kaneki goes to take a step back- absently trying to tug Maka with him- the ghost follows, keeping the space between them exact while making it clear that whatever Pokemon is doing this...it isn't interested in leaving Kaneki alone just yet. And while Kaneki does realize deep down that this is just another ghost...that doesn't mean he's reacting well to it being here.]
...go away.
[He breathes in an undertone, but she doesn't move. She just tilts her head a little, her small smile widening.]

[Maka speaks this louder, with more emphasis, moving to stand between Kaneki and the apparition of Rize. Whether or not it's real, she's determined to protect him.]
She can't hurt you anymore, Ken. This ghost wants to hear what you have to say to her, that's all.
[The girl reaches back to take his hand, her grip is as steadfast as her tone and posture.]

But I...I don't...
[He doesn't have anything to say to her. Right? He just...he never thought he'd see her again, much less here.
And all he wants is for her to not be here anymore.]
