Hey, so, we've got a lot to celebrate in this house, coming up. A couple birthdays, at least one arrival anniversary...

I don't know who remembers last year, when our house hosted a bonfire party. But, looking at the calendar, I think we're due for another one. We live on the beach, we're out in Sevii, we might as well make use of the space, right?

I'm thinking next weekend. We'll make a real party out of it -- fire, food, music. That kind of thing.

[There's a pause, and his Umbreon regards him with the most skeptical look an Umbreon can possibly give a man.]

... don't worry, I won't be the one cooking.

What kind of underage drinking are you expecting to happen?

[ look there's a good chance half the time they had watered down ale because it was safer than, well, water, so she's more mildly amused on this point ]

Last time, Lance somehow got hold of something way too strong and convinced the whole team to play Never Have I Ever.

Something like that.

[He learned way too much about his family in that night.]

What the hell is Never Have I Ever?

And what are the chances of him pulling the same thing twice? Or wait, I don't need to know.

It's a drinking game. One person says "never have I ever" done something, and anyone who has done that thing has to drink.

Like... never have I ever had a pod of Lapras. Armin would have to drink. I wouldn't.

So people play drunken confession-interrogation games? Proceeding to get more and more tipsy to drunk as things go on?

That's exactly what happened last time.

So they behaved like... socially adapted people in a social setting?

How do you mean?

[Calling Pidge "socially adapted" is kind of a stretch.]

They're acting like friends at the barracks. The game's a bit dumb, but most of them are. It's just another way of gossiping while getting drunk, finding reasons to tease each other or draw out confessions for people choosing to be honest.

But I learned things about my team I will never, ever unlearn.

I want that hour of my life back.

There might be a reason why commanding officers are better off not drinking with their subordinates... many, many reasons.

Besides, who said anything about there being no regrets involved? As far as I can tell, most social activities where drinking or gossip are involved lead to some level of regret for at least some participants.

In all honesty, we've never totally felt like a traditional chain of command. We're really more like family at this point.

Oh, there was plenty of that.

And people storming off.

I can't say if that sounds more or less like family, but it does sound like close friends. Including the storming off. Emotions are like that.

Well... at least three of us are going to be actual family down the road...

But I can definitely say we're close friends.

[ Combee, Cutiefly, do you really want to know all the deep down details? Either way, you can buy honey in bulk at the department stores! Also: it's good, but don't use it for a drinking contest... the alcohol content is higher than beer, it's a bad plan. ]

I don't know that there's much of a difference between the two, anyway.

[Maybe don't bring that to the party, Annie... just maybe leave that for your own private parties.]

Even in a shitty world, I think it's true. I've seen it happen enough, and my world counts as pretty shitty. Not at all ideal.
