[ James has propped up the PokéGear with a lot of care to sit steadily on top of something and film James from the shoulders up. He's facing the camera with a serious and dutiful expression. It probably looks a little like he's a youtuber.... or like he's on a military skype conference. Either works. ]

This is Lieutenant James Griffin of the Galaxy Garrison.

I'll be skipping past the 'I have found myself in a strange situation' since I assume that's a regular occurrence for this place, but I do still have a lot of questions.

What's the identity of this woman in New Bark Town who introduced herself as, and I quote, "your mom, silly", and now steadfastly refuses to open the door for me again?

And what's with the music playing? Where is it coming from?

Also--- [ And that's where he's cut off by a pounce from a Lillipup that decided it has had enough of being ignored. James turns towards it. ] Hey, wait a moment, alright? I'm not done here! Don't give me that look....

[ Defeated, he picks up Lillipup and holds it in his arms, scritching its head as he turns back towards the camera. ]

Also I'd love to obtain a vehicle at some point. I'm willing to work for it.

She's a liar. She tells everyone she's their mom when they show up here. I think she likes lying.

[Newt is not a fan and is not in the group that thinks 'Mom' has a tragic backstory.]

The music's just in the background, you can't turn it off. You just get used to it after a while and you can listen to other music on the radio or on your gear to drown it out.

Well, that's not disturbing or anything.... Both of these things really.

Everyone shows up at that woman's house, too? I guess there's my explanation for why she won't let me back in, it'd be crowded.

[ Whether or not this is truly an 'explanation' or just more questions in a trenchcoat...? Who knows. ]

Yeah, everyone wakes up there but we don't get a lot of new people really.

It's nice here but there's a lot of weird things like the music and the lying lady that people don't know why it happens. And some people have been here for years.

... does anyone ever... leave?

[ He's trying not to trip over himself with questions on how to leave, but it's already driving him nuts to be here and it's only been 5 hours. ]

Oh yes. But we don't get to decide that.

This place just sends us home when it wants to. Just like it brings people here.

[She understands the questions though, she'd wanted to go back too when she got here first.]

You don't have to worry about home though. If we do go back, we go back to the exact time we got taken from.

Oh. Huh. That's... It's practical on a very pragmatic level, but also disturbing.

[ And he's getting all this info from a small child, which doesn't do anything to ease the overall weirdness of the situation. ]

How long have you been here?

I've been here for one year and .....eight months.

But some people have been here for years.

That's... a long time.

[ Putting it mildly. The color is basically draining from his face, but he's trying to keep this professional. ]

I'm going... to just have to raise this little dog, huh?

Yeah. It's not that hard though. I have...a lot of pokemon now and they're really smart and helpful. Especially starters, I think.

[Or Newt just got really lucky and got a super protective pokemon as a starter.]

There's a lot of information in the book you get and in the gear and people are really nice here so you can ask for help for all sorts of things.

Well, I did always want a dog when I was... probably your age. My parents never allowed it. Better late than never...?

[ What a bittersweet thought... ]

It's nice. We didn't have any animals on the colony I'm from. ....or grass, or trees.

I just got to read about them in school.

This place has all sorts of animals, even if they're not normal ones. And lots of trees.

[ Oh god, that's.... depressing. It's a bleakness he can't quite understand from experience but feels like he's beginning to comprehend anyway. ]

Where was your colony located?

We were the Hadley's Hope colony on the moon Acheron, LV-426.

[She says the last part like she's reciting. Which she is. You got certain facts drilled in at her school.]

I don't remember the system name or how far away we were from Earth though.

I don't recognize the name immediately, so I'd say... pretty far. I'm a trained space explorer after all.

[ Even if he's never went to space, oops. ]

Humanity has done incredible to branch out this far in your world.

I guess so? I know a lot of worlds don't have space travel or can't go really far with it. But it's pretty normal for me. I was the first person born on our colony and I'd never left till right before I came here.

Did people not start colonies in your world?

No, we were still in the process of exploring out own solar system. Made it to the very edge of it, which seemed like an incredible feet.... well, until we got uh.... forcefully annexed by an alien race that had progressed way further.

[ ... how to describe invasion to a kid when you already started the sentence and didn't think it through before. ]

[Her eyes go wide at that.]

Oh no. I'm really sorry.

In my world, no one- ....only some people knew about aliens. We didn't know anything about them and they killed everyone in the colony but me. I hid in the vents. It was ....really bad.

[Slight understatement coming from a small child who has seen wayyyy too much.]

....does annexed mean killed?

[ Oh.

Ooooooohhhhhhh.

Well, this makes a lot of things easier, but that's a horrible thing to think when confronted with this specific tale. James looks stunned for a second, but he recovers fairly quickly. ]

No, it means becoming part of the Empire. They did kill a great deal of people, but a lot were sent to work camps instead.

We didn't know either, until about a year before this happened. It wasn't a lot of preparation time.

Ohhh....

[That actually makes her think it over a bit.]

They sound really different from the aliens in my world. There were eggs on the moon for a really, really long time until the Company sent m- people to find them. Then they hatched, got really big and attacked and killed everyone, really, really fast. They're like monsters. They only use people to make more of themselves.

Do you still have people fighting against your aliens?

[She hopes they don't die as much as the marines did.]

You're looking at one.

[ He straightens his back and all, he's very proud of that fact. Internally though, he's screaming. Whatever aliens this girl dealt with are definitely the worst. He's never considered that he should be grateful for what the Galra are, but.... wow. ]

I was one of the people defending the last stronghold on Earth before I got brought here.

[Oh! You're like a marine. Newt nods seriously.]

I really hope you don't die.

[She's...trying to have hope. It just usually gets wrapped up in her mindset of all you can hope for is survival.]

Why do the aliens even want you guys in their Empire?

[Yeah, Xenomorphs are like. Hey there's free bodies/real estate here vs a long term plan of domination and enslavement.]

The people who are the biggest threat to the empire come from our planet. They're hoping to lure them in by hurting their home.

[ Which... sucks, but like, what doesn't. It also sucks when an 8 year old tells you not to die, really. ]

But they don't want to kill everyone?

[See, this is the idea she's having trouble understanding.]

I... actually don't know. We're bait for Voltron, but whatever they want to do with us after they captured it.... No idea.

I don't think I want to find out.
