Calling All Auroras!

Who: The Elite Four and the Aurora League
Where: The Indigo Plateau, Pokemon League Headquarters
When: November 24th onwards
Summary: After receiving official letters from the Pokemon League summoning them for a vague but urgent matter, members of the exclusive "Aurora League" arrive in the hopes of finding out what's up...
Rating: G, unless folks start swearing.
Log:

Between the rapidly-receding autumn and the (literal) dark days as of late, winter has come a little early to the Indigo Plateau, with frozen rain lashing against the windows and fierce winds buffeting the pines mercilessly outside. The streets are muddy and largely empty-- the Plateau rarely sees challengers this late in the year, and the resident League employees are staying indoors as much as possible, dashing between buildings with blown-inside-out umbrellas or flapping coats held over their heads.

FORTUNATELY for the invited Aurora Leaguers, they will be warping directly into the lobby of the Pokemon League HQ rather than anywhere that would require them to face the elements.

Upon arriving, each member will be directed into a private room and told to make themselves and their Pokemon comfortable (although it's a little small to accommodate more than one or two 'mons on the larger side) while they wait for the others to arrive. And it IS quite comfortable-- there's a table set up with refreshments (coffee, pastries, and fruit for the humans, and a variety of Berries and PokePuffs for their Pokemon) and the chairs are plush. No magazines, although there's a bookshelf in each corner featuring volumes of Professors Oak and Elm's work.

And that's where everyone will be for awhile!

Until, of course, they've all arrived.

That's when a door on the far side of the room opens, and in steps...

Dragonmaster Lance advances to the head of the table and stops there, hands resting heavily on it, as though even moving that far required more effort than it should have.

"... Champions of the Aurora League, I'd like to thank you deeply for your prompt response to our summons."

His voice, normally rich and authoritative, sounds thin. Coupled with the dark shadows under his eyes and the... uh, total lack of color, it is very clear that something's wrong.

"I'm sure you're all wondering why you're here. I promise we will explain to the best of our ability... but the long and short of it is... something is happening and we, the Elite Four..."

The door opens again, and in come the other four Elites: Will, Koga, Bruno, and Karen. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they ALL appear to be sharing the Dragonmaster's affliction: deathly pale complexions, faces sagging with exhaustion, and the jarring appearance of someone yanked out of an old black-and-white film and plopped down into a color one. The clothes they're in all appear normal though, albeit somewhat less... professional than the garments they're usually seen in. Karen is wearing sweatpants, and Bruno has a king-sized down comforter draped around his shoulders like a cape.

They look profoundly miserable.

"... believe that the eight of you are the only ones who can succeed at stopping it where we failed."

_____________________

With everyone seated (and Karen chugging pitch-black coffee as though in the vain hope that it might make her feel better), Lance begins their tale.

"While the situation with the Aether Foundation was unfolding, the Elite Four and I were investigating the source of the unusual swarms in Cerulean City, which we believed to be the cave to the north. As you know, access to the cave has been restricted due to the dangerous terrain and Pokemon within it, leading us to suspect that perhaps a wormhole had appeared inside without anyone's notice, driving the resident Pokemon out of their territory."

Lance pauses there with a quiet 'Excuse me' before uncapping a water-bottle and drinking deeply. As he's tending to his parched throat, Koga picks up where he left off.

"As we predicted, we encountered very few Pokemon inside... what few we did see completely ignored us in favor of hurrying towards the surface as though fleeing something. Which, considering Cerulean Cave's Pokemon population is normally extremely aggressive towards human intruders, was no insignificant matter," the Ninja Master says, his hands steepled in front of him on the table.

"We won't bore you with the insignificant details," Karen cuts in, glaring down at her coffee for its audacity in failing to relieve her fatigue. "The fact of the matter is, what we found down there was a wormhole fifty times bigger than anything those Aether buffoons could conjure on purpose in their wildest dreams."

"But that's not all," Will interrupts. He looks like he hasn't brushed his hair since they left the cave. "Tell them what was coming out of it."

Karen transfers her glare to the Psychic-trainer, but he's already sagging back against his chair like a festively-dressed ragdoll, energy reserves apparently drained just from the act of speaking. Karen is spared the effort of having to come up with some biting remark about how she was going to tell them, you fancy idiot, by Lance, who rejoins the conversation, his tone grave.

"What was coming out of it was a creature the likes of which this world has never seen. It was colossal, and seemed to be made of pure darkness, radiating an aura of enormous power. If I absolutely had to draw a comparison, I suppose it could be likened to the other "Ultra Beasts" that have been coming through these wormholes... but I feel that doing so would be painting a dangerously inadequate picture of the level of power we're dealing with.

With a deep and tired sigh, he pulls out a remote and activates a screen behind him. Photographs of Pokemon that the Aurora Leaguers will immediately recognize as being the ones they battled to win their final Pokemon League challenge slowly cycle through.

Lance's Dragonite draped limply across several Pokemon Center beds pushed together with a concerned-looking Nurse Joy pushing a thermometer into its mouth.

Bruno's Onix, curled in a ring and looking even grayer than normal, despondently ignoring a heaping plate of nutritious food next to its head.

Will's Xatu, once-bright plumage now completely dull and colorless, hunched like a vulture on a perch as a Chansey presses a stethoscope to its narrow chest.

Karen's Gengar, sitting in a corner with a hot water bottle on its head and an expression so depressed it would almost be funny if it weren't for the gravity of the situation.

Koga's Venomoth, just face-down in the middle of his grassy battle-arena like a paper decoration that blew down in a storm.

Each and every one of them is as black-and-white as a newspaper photograph.

"As you can see... our attempt to battle the invader did not end in our favor. And..." Lance lets out a completely mirthless chuckle as he gestures to himself and his colleagues. "Now we know that humans are no exception to whatever power has been draining the color out of our Legendary Pokemon. Which, as you might have gleaned from the photos and... us, is not an enjoyable experience."

Next to him, Bruno's chair creaks as he leans forward. He hasn't said a single word during this entire exchange, and now his muscular frame is visibly shaking with the effort to muster coherent words.

"Bruno... craves... death."

A pointed silence falls across the table.

"... Thanks for your input, Bruno," Karen says flatly after a moment.

Bruno just grunts and lapses back into silence.

Lance raises the remote again and shuts the TV off-- even through his exhaustion, it clearly pains him to look at his own Pokemon in such a terrible state.

"Fortunately, the Legendary Beasts Entei and Raikou came to our rescue before something even worse could befall us, and we were able to escape to the surface. However, we had no way of contacting anyone, and with our Pokemon badly stricken and us not faring much better, we had no choice but to let Entei and Raikou continue to help us back to the Plateau," he says.

"Tell them the other part, Lance." Will had lifted his head for about two seconds, then let it flop back down.

"Ah, yes... Partway through the journey, as the Legendary Beasts carried us, something else happened. Two enormous shapes swooped down out of the sky-- Lugia and Ho-Oh. They landed on either side of us, with Lugia letting out an enormous roar at us. Then Ho-Oh, too, screeched-- but at Lugia. And then at us. Then the Beasts began to roar... I will confess that with our Pokemon out of commission, we had no way of interpreting exactly what was being communicated... only that all of them appeared to be extremely distressed. After a few moments, they both took off again, flying back in the direction we came from. And... we eventually arrived back at the Plateau. Which brings us to today."

Lance lifts a hand to swipe across his forehead-- talking this much is clearly taking it out of him. Fortunately, it seems they've reached the matter of the Aurora League.

"It probably doesn't come as any shock that my colleagues and I are incapable of battling... or indeed, doing much of anything... in our current state. But the wormhole in Cerulean Cave remains, and I'm sure you too have noticed how there seems to be less light in the world. Which we believe to mean that whatever was trying to get through... did. So... we need powerful, capable trainers to enter Cerulean Cave and... do what we couldn't. And you all... have already proven yourselves, in our eyes."

He looks to the rest of them, and one by one, they all nod.

... Or, in Bruno's case, grunt vaguely.

As Lance wraps up his speech, Heather looks some combination of very worried and... well, this.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Just us? By ourselves? Like... do we get any help?"

EXAMPLE ANSWER, because this is actually important but the post was super long already

[personal profile] indigo_league 2019-11-26 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Lance shakes his head and answers that no, they don't expect the fresh faces of the Aurora League to just go down into Cerulean Cave by themselves and hope everything works out.

It turns out that among the other things the Pokemon League confiscated from the Aether Foundation HQ as evidence, one of them was the device they invented for opening wormholes-- and some of the Aether scientists in custody were willing to help operate it, if they can safely be escorted to the site where Necrozma emerged.

AND, because these are technically imprisoned criminals and Lance doesn't expect the Aurora League to have to deal with navigating Cerulean Cave AND making sure none of them try anything, they'll have some very qualified help going with them...

Armin's hand shoots up, as if this was a classroom lecture of sorts.

"So, the creature is still inside the cave?"

And added immediately after that.

"Can you tell us anything more about when you battled it? Was it weak to anything in particular or did it seem to resist certain attacks? I think that'd be important to know before we pick the pokemon we'll bring with us."
indigo_league: Artist: <user name="jellosaurusrex" site="tumblr.com"> (Default)

[personal profile] indigo_league 2019-11-26 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
At the first question (Koga and Lance look faintly amused at Armin's student-like manner, even through the Desaturation Crud), Lance answers that they're not sure-- that while they did manage to push it back long enough to escape, it's been weeks since then, and given their suspicions that the early darkness and terrible weather might be related to it, it's entirely possible that it's already gotten through into our world.

At the second, Bruno reluctantly (and very slowly) manages to bring up that even though the invader seemed to be darkness manifest, none of his Fighting-type Pokemon seemed to be able to do anything-- but Lance speaks up (on Koga's behalf-- the Ninja Master appears to have temporarily fallen asleep in his chair) to mention that out of all of them, Koga's Bug-type Pokemon lasted the longest and seemed to get closer to slowing it down than any of the rest of them.

Will brings up that light and beam-type attacks-- like Light Screen and Psybeam-- not only did jack sh*t but actually seemed to make the invader stronger.

There are already some solid questions. Through the entire meeting, Riku's been quiet, listening intently as he tries to process the situation. This is... a lot. If even Legendary Pokemon have struggled, what even are their odds?

But Riku's never been one to back down from a challenge, even now.

Eventually, he clears his throat and addresses the Elite Four. "Knowing weaknesses is a good place to start, but what about its fighting style? What's the range on its attacks? The more we know going in, the better we can strategize and minimize the risk of... whatever it did to you guys."

"I assume that our ultimate goal is to send that creature back where it belongs, close that wormhole, recover our lost light and heal those who have been afflicted by this... illness. But should achieving all of these objectives be beyond our grasp, what are our priorities?"

Cecil doesn't want to be pessimistic and plan for the worst or barely-acceptable scenarios, but someone has to. But with his next question, his voice switches from pragmatic and determined to something softer. More careful.

"Also, if it comes down to it, what amount of force would be acceptable when dealing with the creature responsible? I... understand that what would be the obvious solution in my world might not be acceptable to you."
indigo_league: Artist: <user name="jellosaurusrex" site="tumblr.com"> (Default)

[personal profile] indigo_league 2019-11-26 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It is definitely a lot.

In response, Lance admits that the fight-- if it can even be called a fight-- was over extremely quickly, as they'd been caught off-guard. But that from what they were able to observe, the creature almost seemed to act like a black hole, radiating darkness in waves. It also possessed long clawed arms that it would lash out with very fast, resulting in anything it touched being instantly (and painfully) drained of color. He warns gravely that getting too close is dangerous for this reason, meaning that any fighting style relying on close/direct contact could be a bad idea, and the rest of them will nod in agreement.

[personal profile] indigo_league 2019-11-26 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Cecil's questions get a pause as they all (except for Will, whose head is still on the table) look at each other. Then Lance says that barring all else, the most important priority is to try and send the invader back where it came from so that it can't do any more damage in this world. The rest of it-- getting light back and healing those who have been black-and-white'd (including themselves and their Pokemon) are less important than trying to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else.

As for his second question, given the invader's power, even pushing it back into the wormhole is quite a bit of a long shot-- they think that it will honestly take everything the Aurora League's got to even do that.

So, a legitimate emergency, then. On the one hand, good to get the confirmation that it's legit at least... On the other hand, it's too early in the day for this.

(It's always too early in the day for anything with him, though, so. And he is, believe it or not, taking it seriously.)

Still, while the others have covered most of the important questions, he might as well ask something practical.

"So, ah, I don't suppose you've got any general maps of how the cave's laid out or anything? Or is what we're looking for pretty straightforward?"

You know, in case people get separated or anything. It's not like any of the otherworlders have ever been inside. It'd at least be one less thing to worry about, at least, to have an idea where they're going.

[(stolen) Aether research]

Shortly after the debriefing with Lance and the others, Sion and Ryner head off... somewhere. Whatever they're up to, it takes a while, but when they do come back, it's with stacks of paper. Like somebody just went through several reams of printer paper, there's that much.

Clearing off a space on the table for it all, the stacks are arranged into something vaguely resembling organized piles while Sion explains.

"I imagine some of you saw this for yourself at the Aether Foundation, but Ryner happened to take the time to document everything found in their labs. While we certainly haven't finished going through all of it ourselves, this is everything we currently believe may be related to the matter at hand. It's all of the notes, the journals, everything that Ryner could find."

Seriously, it's a lot.

"We still have the rest of it on our pokegear and can print more if needed, but we thought this might be the best place to begin. If you have general question, I may be able to assist, but for any more specific analysis, you should probably talk to Ryner. In any case, I imagine the more people to work on this, the better. If you need more, or want to see something we haven't printed, let us know."

[Battle plans]

Of course, while Sion isn't nearly as good at the research angle as a certain mage, there are other areas he has a bit more expertise in.

"From the sound of it, unless we can find some way to defend against this being's draining effects, a direct confrontation should only be a last resort. Which means we need another way to approach matters.

"One possibility is to drive or lure it someplace. Cut off all other routes so that the only way it can go is back through the wormhole, or have something it desperately wants and will chase after."

Or both, if possible. Both is definitely good.

"Its desire for light and its apparent weaknesses to certain types of attacks are good starting points. If there's a way to pacify it, of course, that would be ideal, but that cannot be counted on. So, if that's not possible..."

Sion begins laying out some possible strategies and scenarios he's already considered. The crux of it is simple: first, they find the strange creature. Then, they attempt to take back the light it's absorbed. Finally, the generate the wormhole and drive and/or lure it through. It's worth noting, and Sion points out, that if they can take back the stolen light, then it may make the creature more desperate and thus more easily baited, though of course that's still a risk...

In any case, this is just a preliminary suggestion; if anyone else has more ideas or suggestions, now is the time to discuss!

"I have another question if you don't mind."

No, they probably don't mind. Seeing as that is what they are all here for.

"What about everybody else? I understand why you called us here, but there are plenty of other trainers who are skilled as well. They might not have defeated you, but they could be a great help. Will we be bringing them along?"

This isn't exactly a 'the more, the merrier' situation, but if they are taking on something this powerful, the more people they have to battle this creature, the better, right?

Team discussion

[personal profile] schachmeister 2019-11-27 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sometime after the meeting, Armin has taken over one corner of the table, various pages full of notes spread out in front of him. Some of the pages simply contain everything that was said during the meeting, jotted down in his quick (though still fairly neat) hand, for quick review, important facts underlined. There is a page full of bug type moves he looked up on his gear as a reference. Bug pokemon aren't exactly his forte, after all. Directly in front of him are pages of pros and cons for all of his battle-ready pokemon. It's pretty clear he's trying to sort out what kind of party to take into the cave with him. They have some time to prepare so this is not a choice Armin intends to take lightly, just like he hadn't just walked onto the Indigo Plateau to challenge the Elite Four on a whim. A lot of planning had gone into that decision.

Though, really, it isn't just his battle, is it? Unlike when they each took on the Elite Four, this won't be a singular battle. They will all be fighting together. Thinking of only individual strategies and not their strategy as a whole would really minimise their chances of success.]

Uhm. [Trying to catch everybody's attention; it's a lot more intimidating when there isn't someone else leading the conversation.] Has anybody made any decisions yet on which pokemon they'll be bringing? Seeing as we are all fighting together, we really should make sure our teams complement each other.

[He frowns a bit as he glances down at his notes.]

Unfortunately, I don't really have any bug pokemon to bring with me. How about everybody else?

The E4 do have maps, and can point out the spot, deep in the cave, where Necrozma was pushing through. Lance does deliver a warning, though - the maps should be taken with a grain of salt. With Cerulean Cave blocked off from trainers, the maps don't exactly get updated often - and their fight with Necrozma is likely to have caused some cave-ins. They'll point out the differences they noticed on the way in, but they weren't in a state to keep track on the way out.

If nothing else, Entei and Raikou did find a way out - so there must still be a way to get in! With any luck it'll still be an easy one.
indigo_league: Artist: <user name="jellosaurusrex" site="tumblr.com"> (Default)

[personal profile] indigo_league 2019-11-27 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Lance explains that while they aren't the only skilled trainers out there, the Aurora League members are the ones who've specifically been vetted by the League, who have legally proven their credentials and taken upon League sanctioned measures of responsibility. Particularly now, it would be very irresponsible of the E4 to allow unvetted trainers into Cerulean Cave. Besides, there's only so much room in the caverns - given how many people and Pokemon are going in already, they'll just start getting in each other's way if there are any more!

The Aurora League members are free to coordinate with other trainers - just keep it discreet enough to avoid mass panic! But unless the situation changes drastically, only the Aurora League, the Aether Scientists, and the vetted trio of Red, Blue, and Green will be allowed in. In the absolute worst case scenario that Necrozma has or does escape the Cave, it would be better for strong trainers to be spread over the region anyway.

Ryner and I have a few, however... What about dark types, or ghosts that aren't also poison type?

I have five. However, not all are suited to such a task.

[The Ledian snuggled in his arms nods sadly. She's willing to try, but she's very much aware that her power is not in the same as, say, a Dragonite's.]

I intend to bring one of my Gardevoirs for Teleport, type matchups be damned. If the fight goes badly, we'll need a way to leave quickly.

I do have a Dewpider, but he is not ready to go on this sort of mission.

[Maybe if Boris had been a more mature spider who was actually willing to focus on training, rather than just thinking he was the best things could've been different. But alas. They were not.]

That's a good idea. We should have some contingency plans for if we need to fall back and regroup. I know there are some items that can distract wild pokemon, but I'm not sure this creature is going to be distracted by a poke-toy or doll.

Well, when it comes to Dark types, I have my Sharpedo. Honestly, I was thinking of bringing her anyway, seeing as she is capable of mega-evolution and it sounds like we need every bit of power we can find.

[Plus, he trusts Nemesis with his life. And really, not just his either. If there is one pokemon he knows he can depend on to help save everybody's butts it is her.]

I've got an Incineroar too. I ended up teaching him a lot of fighting type moves which are going to be useless from the sound of it, but he'd still have his fire and dark moves.

As for ghosts, I have a Dhelmise. Octavius is one of my strongest battlers, even if he can get a little... wild.
foolishwren: i was sitting there for a good five minutes going, “no. no. they wouldn’t have called a kids film ‘big fucking giant.’ would they? would they?” (I forgot what "BFG" stood for)

When the laying-out of the facts is all said and done, Heather leans back in her chair heavily, pinching the bridge of her nose between her thumb and forefinger.

It's a lot to process, even for someone who really did think she'd seen it all.

The first place she looks as murmurs of discussion start up all around is the two Pokemon seated with her-- Wolf the Lucario and Val Jr. the Hitmonchan. They look, if it's possible, even more worried than she does-- Val's arms are folded in consternation, and Wolf's aura almost vibrating instead of its usual gentle shimmer. Of the two, it's the Lucario who looks most rattled, doing the full on upset-doggy whale-eye.

Forcing a crooked smile back onto her face, she reaches out to lay a hand on the jackal's shoulder.

"I guess this is one you guys will have to sit out on, if what Bruno said is true. Be nice letting someone else do the hard work for a change, huh?"

Wolf doesn't look particularly reassured, but out of politeness, he thumps his tail a little at the attempt. And an attempt is all Heather's really got at this point-- if Fighting-types couldn't even make a mark, and everything else the Elite Four had barely did better, what options did she even have?

The rest of the group is where she addresses her next thought, which is:

"Between the mystery type-weirdness and the fact that we're going to be down in a cave, and the fact that we can't let the thing touch us, most of my usual standbies are gonna be at a pretty big disadvantage..."
foolishwren: *i take a pen and make it say 69 69 69* *the wall bleeds a little more to say beneath it: "nice"* (*walls start bleeding and spell 666*)

[Heather's scooted her chair on over to take a look at what he's got going on, and she leans her elbow on the table, head propped up on one hand.]

Me either... I mean, I've got a few, but they're not... nearly as trained as the rest of mine... the only one that's level 100 currently is pretty much a retired house Pokemon.

[NOT that Honey the Butterfree hadn't helped her through A LOT of earlier gym battles, but he's not exactly the one her mind jumps to for "badass apocalyptic-monsterfighter".]

[As for the rest, she ticks them off on her fingers.]

Got a Joltik who I literally wouldn't dream of throwing at a monster like this, got a Larvesta who I've been trying to train, but she's... pretty timid and scared of everyone but me... I guess the best candidates would be my Butterfree and my Whirlipede, but... out of the two of them, only the Butterfree is fully trained. I've been training the other one, but he's like. You know. Not quite to the level of the guys I'd usually bring to something... as big as this.

[She's not even gonna mention the other Scolipede she has boxed up, who she's pretty sure would switch sides and fight against them if she had the chance.]

*Sion nods at that*

If it's affected strongly by bug types, there's only three possible types it could be. Of those, the only one resistant to fighting types is psychic. If we can presume that's correct, bringing dark and ghost types should give us quite a few more options.
schachmeister: (pic#13133723)

[personal profile] schachmeister 2019-11-28 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Armin makes a few notes after Heather names her pokemon, chewing a bit on the end of his pen as he thinks it over.]

Sion said the creature might be a psychic type -- or whatever this creature's world's equivalent of that is, seeing as it is weak to bugs and resists fighting moves. In which case, any dark or ghost type pokemon you might have could be useful too.

[A few more moments of pondering, a bit more pen chewing.]

Though... do you have any powerful electric types?
schachmeister: (pic#10777640)

[personal profile] schachmeister 2019-11-28 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
True...

[Armin trails off as he ponders. So much to think of here!]

Well, in that case, it'll be good to make a list of any dark or ghost type pokemon people might have. A psychic type or two might be handy as well. If you are right about it being a psychic type, they might not be able to do much damage to it, but they should be able to resist its attacks. It could make them very valuable support pokemon.

[After all, when you are taking on a world-devouring god, you really don't need to stick to the one pokemon vs one pokemon rule, right?]
foolishwren: what if i just lost my shit the entirety of it (what if i just lost it)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2019-11-28 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[A psychic-type? That hadn't even occurred to her... but after a moment's thought, that... kinda makes a lot of sense?]

[But Armin's question snaps her back out of her musing.]

Oh! Uh-- yeah, actually, yeah I've definitely got Electric types. A Pikachu and a Manectric. Both strong, both battlers.

[A beat.]

... Uh, why?
