CERULEAN CAVE: Aurora League

The morning of the first breaks crisp and grey in Cerulean City, as have so many mornings recently. Though the sky is clear, the early morning light somehow feels thin and worn as it washes over the entrance of the Cerulean Cave and the wide strip of cordoned off land surrounding it, Jennies posted at regular intervals to keep out the unauthorised public. It gives the cave a somewhat foreboding feeling, but considering what's probably down there, it's far from misplaced.

This morning, however, brings more than just thin light and a too-short day; this morning also brings the arrival of the Aurora League.

After several days worth of preparation and strategy discussion, the members of the Aurora league arrive in Cerulean City. They are not alone, however. Accompanying them are four of the Aether Foundation's top scientists, somewhat nervously huddled together and casting glances at the gathered Jennies. Faba in particular seems like he is rethinking the choice to come along on this mission, squinting at the cave entrance mistrustfully (though that might just be due to his lack of sunglasses). Surrounding the disgraced scientists at strategic points are the three champions Red, Blue, and Green, each with one of their Pokémon at their side. Though no word is exchanged between the parties, their expressions and the way they've used their Pokémon to keep the four surrounded make it more than clear that any attempt at escape or sabotage will be swiftly dealt with.

Completing the group is the Elite Four... though honestly, each of them looks like they should be in bed. So far the four have managed to avoid any public appearances, so it's no surprise when shocked whispers ripple through the gathered crowd (safely kept behind the barriers, of course) as they emerge from the Pokécenter, each looking more haggard than the next, their skin and hair completely greyed out. Will has all but swooned into the arms of his Gardevoir, the two managing (just barely) to keep the other upright. Koga's Venomoth drags itself along the ground after its trainer, wings beating weakly, never creating quite enough wind to lift it off the ground. Karen is flanked by her Houndoom and Absol, both occasionally ducking in to keep her upright with their muzzles, while Dragonite rests a large grey paw on its trainer's back as Lance limps along the front of the group. Bruno alone stands without his Pokémon, instead clutching that impossibly large comforter around his wide shoulders, the ends dragging along the ground like the world's saddest cape.

In truth, the Elite Four know they are useless here. Their battle has already been fought and lost. Now it rests in the hands of the Aurora League. Even knowing that, however, they just couldn't let these brave trainers go to fight without at least seeing them off. It is the least (and only) thing they can do.

ECRUTEAK CITY: Team Bell Tower (Raikou, Moltres, and Suicune)

In Ecruteak City, the morning of the first doesn't so much break as it seeps into town, the thin morning light struggling to cleave through the mist that hangs along the old city streets. Unlike the warm blanket of fog that covered the city until just recently, this is the sort of mist that chills you down to the bone.

Ever since Raikou and Moltres showed up several days ago, the city has been host to various trainers that have turned out to help keep watch over the ailing Suicune. Though the monks have so far refused anyone besides the highest members of their order direct access to Suicune, they are grateful to everybody who has offered their help.

This morning, just like previous mornings, finds the monks preparing breakfast in the large, open-air kitchen they've set up. With the influx of trainers and Legendaries, the monastery's kitchen has proven incapable of meeting increased demand, but while they won’t turn down a few extra helping hands from those same trainers, they are adamant that everyone who has come to Ecruteak will be fed.

And it's not just the monks who are trying their best to accommodate those who've come to help protect Suicune; the city of Ecruteak itself has opened its arms and homes to the trainers. During the days that they find themselves in the city, various citizens of the town have opened their own homes to trainers, giving them a homier place to rest after a long shift at watch than the Pokécenter. Local restaurants are adding their own meals to the healthy fare cooked up by the monks, and despite the dark, dreary feel of the world, even the youngest of the town are trying to help out in their own small way, Youngsters running from trainer to trainer and carrying with them lunchboxes and herbal teas, dumplings, and even Poké-puffs for the Pokémon helping out on watch.

Through it all, Raikou and Moltres have kept to their vigils. Raikou has alternated between joining Suicune inside the tower, spending long stretches of time with its fellow beast, and standing high atop of the tallest temples, its tail crackling and flashing slightly through the dark night as it scans the horizon for hours on end. Moltres, meanwhile, has remained aloft, circling over the city. Yet though the bright light of its flames should illuminate the grey clouds and sky, even its Legendary light feels dim and drawn.

OLIVINE CITY: Team Whirl Islands (Entei, Zapdos, and Articuno)

Following Zapdos and Entei's arrival in Olivine, trainers and locals alike have flocked around the legendary Pokemon. Despite a persistent drizzle of rain that never quite seems to stop, fishermen have begun arriving by the dozen, each bringing along their own craft. From the largest, most state-of-the-art vessels to what might be politely labelled 'floating antiques,' each one arrives beachside by owners eager to help Zapdos and Entei in any way they can.

And while the menagerie of seacraft grows, Olivine itself does not rest. Locals come out in droves, bringing with them supplies for each of the boats, enough to last full trips to the Whirl Islands and then some; warm, rain-repelling clothing for every trainer that finds themselves a bit underdressed for the weather; and warm coffee, tea, and cocoa to drink while they wait. Trainers too are welcome to help out with this. Teamwork makes the dream work, as the saying goes… or at least keeps everybody warm, dry, and in better morale.

Through it all, the two Legendary Pokémon simply allow events to transpire around them. Entei paces up and down the sand in front of the boats while Zapdos wings circles in the air. Occasionally the two can be heard calling to each other, sharp barks and piercing cries filling the air. In a less tense situation, one might have described the back and forth as irritated bickering; as it stands, an obviously exhausted Reporter Sarah describes the apparent conversation between the two legendaries as a 'spirited debate' during one of the many, many, (seriously far too many) breaking news updates that air as the story unfolds.

Once Entei has judged the fleet sufficient for its mysterious purposes, it throws back its head with a heart-stopping roar that echoes down the coast before it begins to leap from ship to ship, landing nimbly atop a large Wailord that surfaces just before its broad paw can touch the water's surface. Turning its head, it stares down the gathered trainers for a long, tense moment, a moment that lasts until even the slowest on the uptake start scrambling for the boats. Only then does the Legendary beast directs a soft growl to the Wailord, which pumps a mighty tail to begin the long swim towards the Whirl Islands.

What follows is an odd procession indeed: schools of wild Water-types, human boats of every size and make (offering berth to anyone who finds themselves without means to cross the ocean), and other trainers opting to travel astride their own Pokémon, Flying or Surfing in clusters amidst the waves.

What exactly is this ragtag fleet searching for? Entei and Zapdos aren't being particularly conversational... but anyone who's sailed between Olivine and Cianwood will recognize the craggy rocks of the Whirl Islands on the horizon.

    ACTION

    [personal profile] fuelthefire 2019-12-04 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Krieg catches the last part of that broadcast in person, because why the heck not? He's moving supplies around with his Blaziken shadow - currently they are supporting one very large ice chest between them - and pauses to check in on Gramps No. 2.]

    Need a sweater, Commander Socks?
    unabates: (pic#12844098)

    it's the BEST BOY

    [personal profile] unabates 2019-12-04 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ jack looks up at krieg when he asks if he needs a sweater, giving the younger man a grin. ]

Behave around your elders, kid. And no; but you'd be surprised how many people forget to wear one in times like these and end up near into hypothermia.

[ crybaby chirps something that sounds like encouragement to fire chicken. ]
    fuelthefire: (IT'S WRONG ALL WRONG)

    Here he is!

    [personal profile] fuelthefire 2019-12-04 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Probably should've mentioned in the initial tag: Krieg is shirtless today, as usual. The rain is just dripping off these broad shoulders and sculpted muscles; he's like a punk firefighter ready to shoot for the next year's charity calendar.

...Look, it may be cold, but he's busting his butt here, and he doesn't have the patience to deal with sleeves when there's a world to save!!]

Hah! I'll try to remember if I see any.

[Murder Chicken squawks cheerfully back at Crybaby. He and his trainer are doing their best!]

You good on supplies and fires?

[His eyes track from the Delcatty keeping Jack company to the tent sheltering a Sylveon and Ninetails. Is that weird multi-tailed fox a fire-type? He thinks he remembers it being a fire-type.]
    unabates: (pic#12922416)

    [personal profile] unabates 2019-12-04 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ ah yes. at least jack has learned trying to wrangle this one into a sweater if it's not subzero temperatures is basically an exercise in futility. ]

Not everyone can be you. Especially not the kids.

[ he looks towards his other two girls - jolene cheerfully working a coffee pot as mercy hands off drinks smoothly - and nods. ]

We'll be fine. Well - could probably use your hand with setting up a couple more fires. Left all my fire types at home.

[ mercy is the ice and fairy variety of ninetails unfortunately. ]
    fuelthefire: (YOU DIE EVERY DAY!!)

    [personal profile] fuelthefire 2019-12-04 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
[To give Krieg credit, he does put on a sweater voluntarily when he's cold. He just really really hates it.]

    Mnahahahaha! I didn't!

[MC squawks cheerfully when his trainer laughs. That's right! Here he is! The burningest fire chicken!]

    What'd'you wanna burn down?
    unabates: (pic#12844099)

    [personal profile] unabates 2019-12-04 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[ and thank god for this fire chicken, honestly. jack grins at both of them. ]

We've got one set up over there you can have at. [ he indicates a little fire pit that's been set up in the sand, stones and all. ] Give me a second to get the other set up.

[ there's a pit that has a galvantula scurrying back and forth finding stones to build a ring around, and jack leans down to grab some firewood that's staying dry under the tent. ]
    fuelthefire: (IT'S WRONG ALL WRONG)

    [personal profile] fuelthefire 2019-12-04 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Sigh! Just a campfire. Two campfires. Well, it's better than nothing. Krieg directs MC with a glance and a tilt of his head, and the two approach Jack's coffee tent to deposit their cooler. Once that's on the ground, Krieg gives his favorite direction.]

    Light 'em up!!

[Despite his trainer's exuberance, MC gets up nice and close to the fire pit that's ready to be lit and directs a very careful and controlled flamethrower at the tinder until the fire catches. Then he waits super politely until Jack finishes setting up the other one.

Where did he learn such nice manners? It's a mystery, because Krieg sure didn't teach them to him.]

What kind is the giant spider?
    unabates: (pic#12844201)

    [personal profile] unabates 2019-12-04 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ jolene and mercy chirp their thanks at the two as they head towards jack. jack, meanwhile, does notice how polite murder chicken is. it's a mystery how, but he gladly thanks the blaziken and offers a head scratch if he'd like it.

    as for gizmo - ]

Bug, and electric. He's good for batteries, but not setting things on fire. [ gizmo clicks his mandibles at the two of them. ] Found him in my bag when I was just starting out travelling.
fuelthefire: (ALL I SEE IS RED!)

    [personal profile] fuelthefire 2019-12-05 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Are you kidding, Murder Chicken will not only accept that head scratch, he won't allow Jack to stop! Please pet his head fluff forever, ok ok???

Krieg, meanwhile, is fascinated by those mandibles.]

    Does it bite?

[He's not asking in the squeamish, concerned sort of way most people utter the phrase "does it bite". He's asking with the enthusiasm of someone who dearly hopes the answer is yes because holy shit, how cool would that be??]
    unabates: (pic#12844201)

    [personal profile] unabates 2019-12-05 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ what murder chicken wants, murder chicken gets - jack will gladly keep scratching his head fluff. plus, the pokemon is warm, and even in gloves his hands are a bit chilled.

the question has gizmo turning to krieg, lifting up on his hind legs and waving his front ones. yes, yes he can bite!

jack, meanwhile, chuckles at krieg's tone. ]

Yeah, he can, even though he likes batteries best. He also loves attention.
    fuelthefire: (IT'S WRONG ALL WRONG)

    [personal profile] fuelthefire 2019-12-06 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh heck yes, MC wants all the head pets, please and thank you! He is going to milk this for everything he can. And if Jack benefits from his inherent warmth? So much the better! Pokemon and people, helping each other out!]

    I don't have any batteries.

[But he will reach out a hand anyway, because he likes petting Pokemon, even ones that look like prickly-haired giant spiders. He holds his hand in front of Gizmo as a sort of polite greeting and request for permission to touch. And also to maybe see if he'll get bitten, but Jack's a good guy even though he's got a terrible name (not his fault!) so he kind of doubts any of Jack's monsters are going to be chomping down without warning, even if he is good for it.]

The Murder Chicken will make you pet it until your hand falls off.

[He says as sort of a friendly warning.]
