VIDEO | Somewhere in Seafoam...

[When the video comes on, it's to quite a lot of ice. So much ice, really.

It appears the boys were unable to find the path outside the caves, to get through Seafoam- and under the impression that the cave was the only way to therefore reach the other half, have been taking the long route.

Whoops

Evidently the pair of them ganging up on anything that moves together has been working out despite level imbalances though, as in addition to the somewhat worn tent pegged up on the frosty ground there's a good number of pokemon not too distant from a roaring fire. Fire pokemon are Great, on that note.

...There also seems to be a small pile of eggs, which a growlithe is proudly nuzzling alongside a similarly pleased zebstrika. One would almost think they're THEIRS! uh oh
]

Ahah. I think that's it then, [comes Jonathan's voice, before he starts speaking to...well whoever's listening really.] I apologize if this isn't filming properly, but these devices simply did not exist where I was from- I have done my best to adjust, but I cannot promise that I have mastered the functions just yet.

Assuming of course that this is working now... [He pauses, as if wondering if that ISN'T the case, but presses on.] I have something of a dilemma- these eggs recently appeared at the campsite, but I cannot determine just where from. I've certainly taken looks over the book in my knapsack, but to have such immediate appearances is simply bizarre.

[haha, bizarre. Haha-]

...As it is, while I have read many things in the books from the pack, surely a horse and a dog cannot breed..!

[oh hun]

[[OOC - There's nothing special about these blitzle eggs- and yes, they're all blitzle, I checked- so I didn't bother making an OOC post for them...but if people DO want to ICly chime in for one, go for it! There's six in total.

On a more important note; Diego will have a taggable prompt below, so that this joint post is easier for people to keep track of. For threads with Jonathan, tag the post- threads with Diego? Tag Diego.

[Diego had decided to open up his own device to check on how things looked, since he could do that much to help Jonathan out.]

It appears to have worked JoJo.

[Focusing back on... well that’s not the camera but he’s close, so give him that much.]

I too am very interested regarding these eggs, as my dear Silver Bullet has taken quite an interest in them.

I am not half so convinced that two such seemingly incompatible creatures could create young, much less why they would be in eggs. They seem undersized for what Silver Bullet started out as...

Actually, all pokemon hatch from eggs. Furthermore, regardless of species, all pokemon eggs are the exact same size and the hatchlings can be many times bigger than the egg.

I know it sounds completely ridiculous but it is the truth.

[He frowns a moment, trying to digest that idea before nodding a little.]

Alright, I believe you... I woke up in a strange home with some woman who definitely was not my mother, but claiming to be, and have been journeying with an electric Zebra. I have very little basis to support not believing you.

Is there a particular reason they work like this? Does this mean there are no true mammals among them? Or are they something completely outside that kind of typing?

I know Miltank produces milk, but when it comes down to it, I guess there really are no pokemon mammals. All produce eggs, and when they hatch, the young are immediately able to eat whatever the adults eat.

It's hard to say why they are like that. I guess that is just how life evolved here.

Hmm... I must admit, back home I was a jockey, not a man of science... and while I read as much as I could... I was not well book learned. Still it sounds as if... rather than being in a kind of classification as animals and plants were back home... these fall under a completely separate idea.

It is quite interesting... this is an amazing world, an amazing place.

You rode horses for a living?

And it is an amazing world. For various reasons, but the pokemon certainly are one of them. I think learning about them can be frustrating for people who keep trying to put them into categories they are already familiar with. But if you let go of that, and see them as something completely separate from other animals you know, there is so much to read about them.

[Though in Armin's case, the sense of freedom, the ability to go where he wants, do what he wants, and read and learn what he wants is unparalleled. And even if there are limitations on his movements to some degree, the yoke is very gentle. Still, one he is going to try and buck, but at least in this world, nobody will shoot him for trying.]

but, he's not in the same position! he's been stuck here for a week, almost two! and god, the weird things he's seen already have completely destroyed his ability to apply logic to the situations in front of him. and that says a lot, considering the ridiculous place he came from. so now, his internal reaction to every single wacky thing he sees in front of him is 'sure, why the fuck not'? this is no exception. ]]
Yeah, usually they can't.

But, I just saw a sentient, moving set of keys the other day, so I figure 'usually' don't really apply here. [[ he grimaces, only a little bit, though. the keys were weird. ]]

Anyway, back to the point: congrats on your weird eggs. Hope you find someone to take them off your hands, looks like a hell of a lot to carry around. [[ he's quiet for a moment, seeming to contemplate something during the silence. ]]

[[ his voice is so shaky. he keeps trying to catching his breath and string a coherent thought together, but it's a short attempt before johnny ditches that idea. given the feed, it's hard to see, but jonathan might notice a peculiar glossiness in johnny's eyes as he hurriedly pushes through the next sentences: ]]

[Honestly, Yuuko's a breeder and she still doesn't get how most Pokemon can breed the way they do.]

Well, that's one of the weird things about Pokemon...they can all lay eggs, no matter what they look like. And no one's ever seen them actually do it, either, so how they can breed with each other is anyone's guess.
icecastlemadonna: (Gwendoline)

[personal profile] icecastlemadonna 2020-03-12 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it could, but I don't think most Pokemon would appreciate that.

The interesting thing about pokemon is that male and female pokemon can produce offspring together whenever they share an egg-group, even if they are completely different species. It can lead to some... unusual combinations.

[Need we mention the hot skitty on wailord action? No. No, we really shouldn't. The less said about that, the better.]

Let's see. Growlithe's egg group is [checking something.] field. And Blitzle's is field as well, so. uh. Congratulations?
schachmeister: (pic#13797659)

[personal profile] schachmeister 2020-03-11 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it. It seems like they only need to share some level of evolutionary history-- uh, that is... long term evolutionary history, not individual evolutionary--

[A pause. Pokemon are so weird.]

Honestly, when it comes to pokemon, I think it can be better to just... try and forget everything you know about the animals back in your own world and look at them only as pokemon. Not that that is easy exactly.

[It'll help keep your brain from breaking.]

And if it is any comfort, a few of the other otherworlders and I have tentatively come to the conclusion that pokemon probably don't actually have, well, physical intercourse. And the eggs aren't exactly eggs either.

[personal profile] schachmeister 2020-03-11 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
At least in terms of expecting them to be similar to any animals from our own worlds. Even when they look very similar, they are still a creature from a whole different world, after all.

[Though, perhaps, in some ways, Armin has a benefit there. Due to the very limited access he had to their own world, he's also pretty unfamiliar with a lot of animals that would've existed in it. Take wailords for example. Having never seen a whale, he's always been able to appreciate them for what they are without having any expectations based on knowledge from his own world.]

Well, I think it was either Mr Newt or Mr Pines who once theorised that it is probably less of a physical mating and more of a... combining of energies. Pokemon do seem to have a strange sort of energy, the same that allows them to evolve. So we thought that they might be able to combine that energy to create new pokemon. Which would explain why they would be able to breed even despite certain physical incompatibilities.

And the eggs would be... sort of a physical manifestation of that energy while the pokemon itself still develops. So, more like... a first evolutionary stage, but one that is similar in appearance in all pokemon. It would explain why all pokemon lay the same size eggs. And how pokemon many times bigger or smaller can hatch from them. It'd be similar to how a pokemon can grow several times in size when they evolve.

[he rubs the back of his neck for a moment.]

Of course, we could be completely wrong. It's just a theory. There isn't exactly any evidence for it.
schachmeister: (pic#10814026)

[personal profile] schachmeister 2020-03-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. And when they first hatch, the chance can be just as drastic. When my Dhelmise hatched, he was already several meters tall, but his egg was just as big as the ones you have over there.

Which is why you should probably hatch every unknown egg you obtain outside. Uhm. Just in case.

[Don't be like those few people every year that are hurt by their new Onix hatching on their lap.]

The network tends to be the best way to find homes for pokemon eggs. That is what most of us breeders end up doing. Though in a pinch, the eggs can be kept inside of the PC for storage and they will be in... a sort of stasis, I guess you could say.
schachmeister: (pic#11026903)

[personal profile] schachmeister 2020-03-12 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Or give them away if you'd rather do that. But it is a common thing for breeders to do either way. Most trainers don't mind paying and there are advantages to hatching a pokemon as opposed to catching it in the wild.

And it won't. I really don't know how it works, but any pokemon or egg put in the computer is perfectly fine. They don't even seem to dislike it.
schachmeister: (pic#13797664)

[personal profile] schachmeister 2020-03-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there is something to be said for either method.

[Armin has always given his eggs away, but that is because he makes a steady amount of money at his actual job, so breeding, for him, is just a side thing. He's much rather focus on spreading the Water Pokemon Gospel than making some money.]

I'm a registered breeder too, but I don't really sell eggs often enough to have any input on prices. Mr Pines often sells his eggs, so you could ask him. So does Cecil. Well, he only sells eggs once a year, but it's always a lot of them at once.
