[VIDEO] 'What's in a Name?'

[The boy on camera seems about the age most Kanto-Johto trainers would set out at under 'normal' circumstance. The way he has a Dratini coiled around his shoulders, among the others (specifically there is a very particular luxio aggressively grooming the boy's hat- it's a miracle the back hasn't just frayed off)...says otherwise.

Not to mention the Cubs hat. That said. Grimacing aside-
] --ut it out, okay? I'm trying to focus on the camer-

...Ah, it's running...

Uhh. ...Hi? I've never done this kind of call before, and...definitely not to a lot of people at once, but it looks like it's the best way to meet others like me here? Or I guess just...others who were brought here?

I guess if I'm going to 'break the ice', I have to ask a simple question right? ...How does everyone pick names for pokemon then? I uh...I never had pets at home! ...I didn't really think I ever would...but suddenly I have loads of them, and they all need names...

[It's maybe a bit obvious that he doesn't know what to say through this.]

[You know what's a horrible mistake? Asking a question like this where Jolyne can find it, given her penchant for nicknames is either from people she knows or absolutely ridiculous stupid shit.

At least she's traveling still, which might make some people motion sick since of course she's riding her damn horse as she's doing all this.]

Eh, y'know, just whatever comes to me. Or if one of 'em earned a nickname. But then you get stuff like Dickhead or Spitball. [WHO LET HER NAME SHIT.]

I've just been naming them the way that I named my pet pig P-chan back home. 'P' for the English word for 'pig' and '-chan' because he's cute. So my starter's a Tepig named 'T-chan' and I just caught a Shinx named 'S-chan!'

[Congratulations, Akane, you might have an even more basic and stupid naming system than Rose Quartz.]

Musical references, mostly? Whatever seemed like it fit. Except for Halley, my starter. I named her after Halley's comet.

Honestly, I often just go with the first thing that springs to mind. I've ended up with a blend of, well, nerdy references, real people's namesakes, and, uh, passive-aggression that way. And occasionally, some that are more than one of those.

[You know. LIKE LITTLE TIMMY THE MIMIKYU.]

[He grew up in a prison around horrible people and she doesn't help, it's fine. It's probably fine.]

Ooookay, so. Spitball came 'round because the Pokemon he is looks like they kind of have a straw or something on his face. And spits water and other things at people. He's kind of an asshole, but he's a useful asshole. [That actually kind of makes sense.]

Mostly I've name them after things or concepts they remind me of. Some of them have nicknames as well. Like Eri.

Also books. Books helped me a lot with coming up with names when I get stuck.

Usually. Sometimes I'll take a couple minutes to really think, though.

I haven't yet! I just got here less than a week ago! But I guess I'd attach a different honorific or suffix to the end. Like -kun or -san or -dono... or even -ko or -taro or -suke.
cometkin: (wink | still this is the final frontier)

I don't just like it! I live it! I am a musician!

... Halley's different because I was still figuring out a lot of stuff when I got her. And also, I just like comets. One of my favorite songs I wrote when I was younger was about being a comet.

[Y'know what, Emporio, she'll do you one better and just show him a picture of a seadra that's not looking too pleased to be out of his ball.]

That. That's what Spitball looks like.

Also, you know, I kinda thought the same thing when I got here. Might be, uh, why the Pokemon I started out with has the name she does. It... fits, I guess. [God, she hates admitting that she's a dumb-ass sometimes, send help, Emporio.]

They're all Japanese. You'd use -kun with a classmate or coworker who you were familiar with, but not that familiar with. Or male friends. And -san is just sort of the default one you use because just plain given names are too intimate for anyone you aren't really, really close to. And -dono is something that people in old samurai dramas use. But -ko, -taro and -suke are just... really common ways for names to end, with -ko being one used with girls and -taro and -suke with boys. Not actually honorifics.

... I guess he kinda is one, huh. [She didn't even think seahorse. This is exactly why she is not allowed the one goddamned brain cell. But she's nodding slowly as she thinks it over, because she sort of assumed it just a weird water type to add to the collection of other weird water types.

And oh hell, he asked that question.]

Kiiiiinda. [Just casually pan over to the leavanny.] Take a guess at what I named her. [She's totally just fucking around with some string she totally just made from her spit or some shit.]

I mean, I literally named a Shuppet Casper because he's an extremely friendly ghost, so I have no room to talk.
