So. Um. Holy Diver's head just swelled up a whole lot and he, uh, has a moustache now. Is this some sort of pokemon medical condition? Is he going to be okay?

[Guess who's never experience a natural pokemon evolution before? Miss American Pie evolved by eating apples.]

You don't have to worry. He's completely fine. He just evolved into a Jellicent.

[Armin's tone takes on some admiration as he glances over the Jellicent on camera.]

Just looking at him, I'd say he looks better than fine, honestly. He's got a nice firm crown and his moustache is nice and plump. And he's shiny too. You've been taking very good care of him from the looks of it.

Oh. Huh. I hadn't realized they just-- do that. I thought it had some kinda trigger or something?

It does have a trigger, but they can be hard to spot visually. For example, some pokemon evolve when they feel a strong bond with their trainers. Obviously, something like that is hard to see. That and it always seems to me that many pokemon have some level of control over whether they evolve or not. So sometimes, even when your pokemon has met all the requirements to evolve, they still wont'.

Do you think I could meet him in person the next time we meet? I love all kinds of water pokemon, but Jellicent are pretty special.

Yeah! I got him my first week traveling with Rose and Carly! I was fishing for supper and caught him instead, because I didn't know not to fish in the dark circles of water if I wanted something to eat and not be my Pokemon.

You got a shiny pokemon that soon after arriving? That is incredibly good luck.

I guess so? I didn't know that differently colored pokemon were that special!

They are certainly rare, though whether you'd consider them really special depends on how you look at it. Some people will pay a lot of money or endlessly breed their pokemon to get a shiny pokemon. That seems over the top to me. They are still just as capable and strong as regular pokemon, after all.

Why are they called shiny anyway?

I... don't know. Maybe because shiny also implies rare and unusual things? Or I guess some species do have rather striking alternative colours so maybe because of that... You'd think this be in the pokedex somewhere.

Oh that's normal. Pokemon just evolve here sometimes. Sometimes they just look a bit bigger but sometimes they change a lot and look really different.

Right! I'm used to Gems doing that, but it's usually because they'd have, well, otherwise died?

But nothing like that happened with Holy Diver. He was just hanging around, minding his own business.

Gems evolve instead of dying?

I mean. It's more like their light bodies get destroyed and they go back into their real bodies, which are their Gems, and they come out looking different.

Um. Well. They try to. If they're not completely destroyed. And... depending how bad the damage is, they usually. Well. Come back wrong. I don't really want to talk about it.

[She can understand that so she'll nod and go back to the first subject.]

Seeing pokemon evolve for the first time is kind of strange but you'll get used to it.

Yeah, I guess so! I mean, Miss American Pie sort of already did, but she'd eaten some special apples, so I thought it was the apples. I didn't know they did it out of nowhere.

It's usually after they get to a certain level. But they don't always evolve right away. Sometimes I think they wait till they feel like it. But I don't know for sure.

I mean, I think you probably know better than me.

[She shrugs slightly.]

There's a lot of weird stuff about this place. No matter how long you've been here sometimes it never makes sense.

I mean, I'm married to an alien. Even if Earth things mostly make sense, space things don't always.

I thought you were married to a gem.

I mean, I am? But Rose wasn't born--grown--on Earth. She was grown on Homeworld, which is really far away on the other side of space.

... I mean, some aliens are probably like that. But alien is a really broad category, kiddo. It encompasses-- a lot of stuff. A lot of different people from different worlds.

[Well that sounds fake. But....Newt has been in this world for a really long time now so.]

Yeah. Monster, animals, people... generally, anyone from a species that didn't originally come from earth is an alien.

I don't like that word....but I guess it's better then Xenomorph. I know there's only one of them. And they're all - terrible.

I'll keep calling Rose a 'Gem' instead, okay? It's what her species is called, anyway. And some of them are even from Earth, because they got planted there. My friend Amethyst is a Gem that came from an Earth kindergarten.

That's okay. It was over two years ago.

Gems are...planted?

Well. The stuff that grows into the gem is. It gets squirted into the earth and the gem grows by sucking up the surrounding life. Until suddenly out pops the gem from their hole!

Are they babies?

Nope! Full grown.

Actually, Rose told me once that it took her a while to realize that adults and babies were the same species because of that.

Really?

....babies do look weird.

Really! We were babysitting my friend Vidalia's kid at the time.

What did she think kids were? Something else?

Yeah. I guess maybe a related species? Like monkeys?
