[The screen is displaying a very pretty teenage girl of Japanese descent that could probably pass for being in her mid-to-late teens. ~~She's actually fourteen but ssshhhh!~~. She wears a baggy sweater with a vertical zig-zag pink and black pattern and both her dangly earrings and her chunky necklace are made from beads painted blue and white to look like the pattern on an Azumarill's belly.

She grins at the camera.]

You guys have been listening to the news since we all got back, right? All everyone on the radio wants to talk about are those Tricky Bandit guys! They don't know if they're really Team Rocket or they're other guys trying to frame Team Rocket!

What do you guys think?

... oh, and this doesn't really have anything to do with the Tricky Bandits, but does anyone know where the Pokemon made of cotton candy are? Because those sound distant.

[Armin was about to respond but then her use of the word distant hits him and he is confused. Wait what? Is this more modern slang he is too grandpa to understand.]

I'm sorry but... distant?

It means cool--well, it really means even cooler than cool. That's what we used to say back home, anyway.

[Claudia, are you sure anyone outside of the BSC ever used your silly slang, even at SMS?]

If something's more cool than cool and not as cool as 'distant' back home, we say 'dibble.' We also say 'stale' to mean the opposite of distant!

[She eyes the boy on the other side of her pokegear thoughtfully. He doesn't seem to be much older than her. Probably fifteen, maybe sixteen. And he's kinda cute.]

I'm Claudia Kishi! [she says, giving him her best smile.] Whats your name?

I'll try to remember that.

[He should not remember this. But he will.

And if he knew Claudia thought he was maybe sixteen, a small part of him would die. Would he never outgrow this baby face? (no)]

I haven't really been on so much--it's been weird getting used to having a pokegear. Back home, only really rich people like Watson Brewer ever had cell phones. But I talked to Riku about his... secret project thing.

[The PGC. She means the PGC.]

And I talked a little to Karamatsu! He's really nice. And we both have the same kind of fish.

[A sympathetic smile.]

Where I come from, we didn't even have electricity.

[So he understands about getting used to things.]

I'm afraid I don't know who Karamatsu is, but a fish? Do you mean a water pokemon?

[Maybe he's Amish?]

Yes! He's a fish kind of water pokemon called a Feebas! Mine's named Mallory, after one of the girls in my club back home. I thought he was a girl at first but I guess he's a boy. I thought Ashley was too, though. It's hard sometimes to tell them apart.

Karamatsu is a college boy [she's pretty sure that's how old he is] from Japan who's a breeder like me. He's got a twin brother.

They are pretty difficult to tell apart. Once they evolve, it's easier, as female Milotic have longer facial fins than the males, but before that using your Pokedex is the best and surest way to sex them. I've heard some fishermen say that you can tell male and female Feebas apart by the length of their tails, but I think that might just be wishful thinking.

[A pause. Oh.]

Sorry, I really love Water Pokemon. It's hard not to end up rambling about them sometimes.

It's okay! It's not weird to want to talk about things you're interested in. If I get bored I'll tell you, promise.

That's a good idea, though. I really have to get used to using this thing more often that I do.

I have another pokemon that's supposed to be water. She looks like a bunny egg thing--she was a mouse egg thing and then she transformed--and the people at the ranger station at the Great Marsh said she has a special hidden ability.

[That sounds like a very familiar description.]

Does she look anything like this by any chance?

[Armin leans out of shot for a moment, calling out to someone and soon, a very cheery Azumarill joins him, peering over the edge of the table at the gear, her ears perking immediately when she spots a face (doesn't matter if it is familiar or unfamiliar, all people are her friend) and she waves.]

That's exactly what she looks like!

[And Claudia will turn to usher someone else over... who turns out to be a serious-looking Azumarill wearing a pair of round, black-rimmed glasses.]

This is Janine. She's very smart and serious and also nearsighted, so I named her after my sister.

[At the sight of another Azumarill on screen, Maribelle explodes into happy squeaking, enthusiastically waving a paw, and immediately launching into a veritable flood of questions -- Hi! Who are you? I'm Maribelle, oh, I like your glasses, have you known your human a long time, oh oh oh it is so fun to meet another Azumarill for a change]

They could practically be twins. Mine is named Maribelle. And she actually has the same Hidden ability as yours does.

[The other Azumarill is a little more reticent. Hello. I'm Janine? Thank you. I need them to see things better. I only met Claudia a week ago. There weren't any evolved Azumarill where I lived before, but plenty of Marill like I used to be.]

Really? Do Pokemon with secret hidden abilities always have the same one?

[Janine could be silent as a rock and it wouldn't matter to Maribelle. She chatters more than enough for two. Or twenty. My trainer has a lot of water pokemon, but no other Azumarills. He says I'm going to be his gym pokemon once he opens up his gym, which will be exciting! Have you battled yet?]

They do. And seeing as she is a girl, any eggs she produces have an 80% of also having their hidden ability. Regardless of species.

[No? Do I have to? I don't believe Claudia needs badges for her pokemon to Fly or Surf with her.]

Really!? Wow! Is it the same when the dad has a hidden ability?

[Maribelle seems somewhat shocked at someone now being super jazzed about battling. Because it is super fun, silly! You get to wrestle around and meet a lot of pokemon if you battle. And show off what you can do and make your trainer super duper happy.]

A male pokemon can also pass on his hidden ability, but it happens far less frequently. Only one in five eggs will have a hidden ability if only the male has one.

Though if you ever end up breeding a male with a hidden ability and a female with a hidden ability together, all the eggs will end up having their hidden ability too.

[Janine just blinks at her. I don't think watching me fight will make Claudia super duper happy. She barely ever pays attention to that stuff, unless it's Thace or Catra having the match.]

Oh! I guess I need to find a boy with a hidden ability to be Janine's boyfriend then.

Distant? They're not far at all!

[Because that's what that word means to Sasha. Someone help her be hip with the fellow teens.

But what Sasha does know is where one can find a cotton candy Pokemon.]

[Sasha turns the Pokegear to the right where there's three different Pokemon--a Togepi, a Swirlix, and a Munchlax--sitting in the corner with a pile of Pokepuffins between them. It's clear they're trying to figure out how best to split up the even number of puffs between a odd number of mouths... if one ignores the fact that Omelette the Togepi is trying to sneak one behind his back.]

Cream, come say hello.

[At the sound of his name, the Swirlix perks his head up toward his trainer, giving Omelette the opportunity to be the thief he was born as.]

Oh! 'Distant' is slang. It's what me and my friends say when something's even more cool than cool. 'Dibble' is when something's cooler than just 'cool' but not as cool as 'distant.' And 'stale' is the opposite of 'distant.'

Okay. This thing says that your Cream is in the same egg group thing as Janine--that's the water rabbit with the hidden special ability I just got. [Which Claudia assumes makes her a prodigy or something, hence naming the Azumarill after her sister.] Can I, um, borrow Cream for a day or two to see if he'll lay eggs with her? Then if there's a boy like him I'll keep it and we'll split the money for the rest of the eggs!

[Sasha frowns, not at the girl, but at the high-speed crash course in modern slang. It's all so confusing. She's been here for almost three years now and still some things make little sense.]

So why don't you just say it's cooler than cool? Why dribble? [That's dibble, Sasha, but we'll forgive you.] And stale is what we call bread that's too hard to bite into so you have to dip it in your soup. So if it's not distant, it's old bread?

[This is where the logic leads her. It's hard when you don't know jack on how to be a normal teen with bad vocabulary.

Cream waddles over and sticks his face into the screen to inspect this other trainer (probably to see if her offer comes with any meals) before flopping onto his back, little chubby feet sticking right out. His way of saying hello, obviously.]

What water rabbit are you talking about?

... I dunno. I think it makes it feel more interesting to have special slang.

[You know what. Let's move on.]

I caught her in the Great Marsh in Sinnoh! The rangers said she had a special hidden ability. [She turns a bit to the side and makes a come here gesture... and wouldn't you know it, an Azumarill with a very serious expression waddles on camera. She's wearing a pair of round, black-rimmed spectacles, kind of like Sylvia Weinstock.] This is Janine. I named her after my sister back home because they're both very serious--and also, she's kinda nearsighted.

Oh, an Azumarill! I don't know what nearsighted means, but she's cute.

[Cute enough to breed if one wanted to, but part of that choice isn't up to Sasha, she thinks. That's why she turns to the big lump of cotton candy like Pokemon next to her for permission.]

Cream, do you want to... [It's here Sasha drops her voice, if only to be polite while suggesting something probably not fit for public discourse.] ...make babies with her?

[Cream, for all he's worth, just gazes up at Sasha with a neutral look on his face. Sure, a lot of Pokemon would jump at the chance to hook up, but Cream is lazy. Sounds like a lot of work, but if it makes his trainer happy, he might as well do it. He shrugs before nodding as Sasha turns the camera back on herself.]

He said okay.

[Claudia preens a little. It's not often that she gets to define words for people.]

Nearsighted means she can't see things that are far away very well unless she's wearing glasses.

But anyway, that's great! Where are you now? I'm still in Goldenrod. We usually hang out somewhere for a little while before we move on and I wanted to talk to the daycare people here and learn more about this whole 'breeder' thing.

If they have any babies like Janine with special hidden abilities, I'll give you one!

[Oh, with Sasha, Claudia's going to get a whole lot of opportunities to define words. That's how the game's played when someone has never sat inside an official classroom.]

Where I'm from, we just called that blind as a bat.

[Sasha snickers, knowing that it's rude to say that out loud, but it's true and not directed at either Janine.

Tilting her head enough that her ponytail swings a bit, Sasha hmms lightly.]

I live on the Sevii Islands, but I can use the teleporter to get to Goldenrod pretty fast. It'll still take a little bit because I have to wait for the ferry to the mainland to get to the teleporter.

That's fine! There's no rush. Thace--he's kind of like my alien uncle here--wants to challenge the gym in a couple of days, so me and him and Catra are gonna be here until he does.

Sevii sounds like it would be so fun to live at. Like being in Hawaii!

[Wow, this is brand new information to Sasha. Luckily, Shiro and Allura taught her what aliens are so she doesn't need that to be explained to her. However, there's still a long list of things Claudia can tell her about.]

It's nice here. It's always warm and it never snows and I can swim right off our porch, but what's a Hawaii?

He's not really my uncle, but he acts like my uncle and he doesn't mind if I call him Uncle Thace. So he's sort of my alien uncle. He's something called a Galra. He says they're purple normally.

Hawaii is a state that's also a couple islands and most of them are volcanos! We went there for a school trip once. It was pretty cool.

[And also awkward, because they went to Pearl Harbor and she ended up feeling kind of guilty, even though neither she nor her family had anything to do with it.]

They get confused a lot. Did you change other words too?

Those were the man ones that we changed. But other people changed other too. Like when I was in California on a trip during break, people would say 'rad' or 'radical' and that meant cool too.

I think I might have heard those before... maybe in a book.

Did someone tell you where to find the cotton candy pokemon?

No, but that's fine! Sasha's lending me hers and I'm going to breed it to Janine and if there's any baby cotton candies I'm keeping one!
