[closed] revelry in the dark;
Who: Kirishima and Bakugou
Where: Union Cave
When: Halloween morning/afternoon
Summary: Just spelunking on the second level while Kirishima tries to convince Bakugou to be social. What could go wrong?
Rating: PG-13 at the least for Bakugou's mouth, probably
Log:
It takes a couple of days just to get through the vast upper layer of Union Cave, but Kirishima has been having a good time of it. Sure, there was one day where training for him and his Pokemon had resulted in running from a very offended Onix, which was a bit humiliating. But that had also ended in confronting and catching the Onix, so hey, overall it's been a pretty net positive! He and Machop were able to return to camp and Bakugou with their dignity intact.
Splitting up when they weren't actively traveling along had become a routine. With their PokeGear, they were always just a call away if need be, after all. And it gave them more things to talk about when they met back up for the night to bunker down. Reviewing the map, there were supposedly more levels to Union Cave that were supposed to be a little more challenging and winding. Obviously a little spelunking was in order before they buckled down for the journey to Azalea Town.
It's only supposed to be for a few hours - checking things out, fighting off slews of tenacious Zubats and the occasionally saucy Geodude - with the way generously lit by Bakugou's fire Pokemon. Kirishima doesn't expect to be here long, firstly because they're due to grab supplies soon and secondly... well, he may or may not have some other plans in mind. About two hours or so exploring the first basement floor of Union Cave presents the pretty perfect opportunity when, after a short battle, Kirishima exchanges his contact information with a kid who was adamant about showing them his awesome Rattata. Because of course he does.
"Oh crap, you know what day it is?"

Quilava doesn't have any problems lighting the area up for them to be able to move about. Now that little transformation had come and went with no small amount of surprise. One moment she had been this small little anteater like thing and then after one battle? Poof. There had been glowing and when it had all ceased? Something similar, but also a little different had taken its place. The little creature's personality hasn't changed one bit though. Her fire is much more potent than before and that's what matters.
By the time Kirishima comes back to camp, he'll notice the blonde with his Dex out. In front of Katsuki is a Sandshrew and apparently he must be looking the thing up. The results of his wanderings for the day. Fire types don't work well against rock so Katsuki figures he's going to have to diversify things. He doesn't know what Kirishima's philosophy about catching these things are, but Katsuki figures he'll catch what he can and then sort it all out later.
"Haaa? What kind of question is that? Of course I know what day it is."
Not to mention that Kirishima also had a birthday this month...

Needless to say he hadn't gone far from camp and only took some simple turns in the various tunnels to scope out the possible next path - with help from Katsuki's Litwick - before running into the Rattata kid. They were all walking ( well, floating in Litwick's case ) up to camp when Kirishima had announced his question, though the kid in question just trots on past, no doubt on his way to speed his prized companion to the Pokecenter just outside the entrance to the cave.
"Really? Guess time's gotten kinda weird for me without seeing the sun for a while... Hey, who's this?" Kirishima, distractible as ever, is derailed from his train of thought by the Sandshrew. "Did you catch this guy or is he just hanging out?"
Machop, who hadn't been allowed to participate in the last battle, quickens his pace past Kirishima only to slow down when he's close enough to start circling Sandshrew. By now both boys are probably familiar with this routine, the fighter Pokemon sizing up every new inductee. The next step could involve either a conversation or an assault. The latter is the most common, so Kirishima adds:
"Be nice."

His eyes look over to the kid running on ahead and Bakugou doesn't even bother to ask. A lot of Trainers have to turn around and leave after a defeat. Thus it doesn't surprise him at all to see this kid run on by. It also doesn't surprise him that Kirishima would probably walk the kid this far back either. Katsuki would roll his eyes, but whatever. It's probably not very "manly" to leave a defeated foe behind. Especially not a kid.
"It's a Sandshrew, apparently," he replies easily, eying Machop. "And yeah, I caught 'em. Apparently Fire types don't do so well against rock and shit."
So he's just trying to be somewhat strategic. The Sandshrew on the other hand, doesn't seem to want to fight at all. It immediately rolls up into a ball, as if that will make it seem harmless. Katsuki rubs at his face. Maybe it will learn. Maybe...
"How much longer are you wanting to stick around?"
no subject
"Why do you keep picking up Pokemon that look so..." Cute. "Nevermind. Hey, Hatenna actually managed to win a battle today. That's progress!" Kirishima is still very much under the impression the sensitive psychic Pokemon's issue is her confidence.
In the meantime, Machop jumps back a little in surprise at the sudden transformation of sorts, throwing up a battle stance. When nothing happens, however, it walks over to begin experimentally rolling the Sandshrew ball.
"We can get goin' whenever you're ready, man! Down where I just went, I heard something that sounded like running water, but we don't have to check it out. I'll help you break down camp."
no subject
His eyes drift over to the other teen as he speaks. They narrow at the word he knows is coming and yet doesn't. He has half a mind to demand for Kirishima to make it just so that he can have a bit of a heated counterargument. In the end he decides against it. It's really not worth it right now.
"How weak was her opponent?" Katsuki snickers, watching Machop roll away Sandshrew. The little yellow ball doesn't seem to mind. Weird creatures. But then all of the sudden Sandshrew pops out of its ball, maybe attempting to startle Machop?
"Anyway... Wasn't I waiting on you? I'm ready to go. I feel like everything is constantly damp around here," he huffs. Perhaps it is because of the running water? Then again caves tend to collect water that collect from rain and ice that get caught in the cracks of the rock.
no subject
Sandshrew's ploy, if that is what it is, succeeds as Machop lets out a small cry and flies flat back onto his butt in an attempt to spring away from Sandshrew. An indignant little snort and pout follows, though Machop seems less concerned with the Sandshrew than he is looking about the camp. Quilava isn't about, right?
"Yeah? I got more of a cool sort of vibe, not too hot or cold." Maybe Bakugou was right and Kirishima really did have some sort of affinity with stone. The redhead busies himself with rolling up his sleeping bag and gathering up the rest of their camp as he speaks. "So... if you know what day it is, does that mean you've been keeping up with the network?"
no subject
"Caves maintain the same temperature all year round," he replies easily, rising to stand. Katsuki isn't going to make Kirishima do all the work. "Moisture collects here pretty easily all the same."
Quilava is around, actually. She only stirs as Bakugou does, stretching and yawning much like a cat. Luckily for Machop she hasn't seen what just happened. Sanshrew, on the other hand, makes chittering noises akin to laughter. The blonde ignores all of this. It's just something he's already grown accustomed to.
"Yeah, sort of," Katsuki says, giving the other a look. "Why."
Why is it important?
no subject
Seeing Quilava is just waking up, Machop is quick to rock onto his hands and spring back up onto his feet. He glowers at Sandshrew as it chitters, balling up his fists and feigning a lunge towards the ground Pokemon.
Hm. Does Kirishima come right out and say what he wants or does he maneuver more? Well... He's never been terribly good at maneuvering and frankly he's pretty sure Bakugou will see through it even if it is dark in these caves.
"There's a Halloween party tonight."
no subject
"I'm aware of that," he says, looking back at Kirishima. "What of it?"
He's not stupid. Bakugou knows full well that his friend wants to go to it. It's just that he is going to make the other say it. However, he'd argue that they don't have costumes and haven't showered properly. Katsuki doesn't think that they are really all that prepared to attend a party, but then again... Many people will be in the same way, yeah?
All the while, Sandshrew is going to toddle over to Quilava in interest. Sorry Machop, but that fake lunge isn't really going to get little Ground-type all that worried yet.
no subject
"Well I think we should go!" Kirishima shoves various crockery into his own bag as he speaks. "It sounds like a lot of people like us are gonna be there. People who come from different... uh... worlds? Don't you think it'd be good to make some more contacts with people who've gone through the same stuff?"
He is throwing this out as a pitch, granted, rather than a simple desire to go socialize. But he is trying to give Bakugou a reason to say 'yes'.
At the same time, Machop is surprised about Sandshrew disregarding him, then absolutely torn between annoyed and impressed. Did this Pokemon know he was faking or did it totally disregard him in general? Machop skulks after Sandshrew, scowling a bit, to see Quilava. He gives a little growl. You better not be ignoring me.
Seeing Quilava is mostly roused, though, Machop is going to break away and try to flop over her back, between the flames, in a playful sort of tackle/pin. Apparently someone needs to have attention paid to him.
no subject
He doesn't answer right away. Instead he starts to "help" taking everything down and packing things up for the trip. Katsuki still isn't sure that this is a good idea. They really do need to bathe or something before they can be seen by people. However Bakugou does know that transport is going to be provided. Rather he just gives a "tsk" as he mulls over the pros and cons about just giving into his friend now or making him work for it a little. Make no mistake... Katsuki knows they'll end up going.
All the while Quilava wonders just what it is that she has gotten herself into here. There's the Sandshrew that seems to want to make friends - as new companions and potential teammates. Then there's Machop flopping onto her back. Sandshrew doesn't seem concerned with it and is sniffing at Quilava instead. She shakes her head a bit, giving an exasperated huff before reaching over as best as she can to give Machop a lick. There's your attention, goodness!
"Ah huh," Katsuki finally replies, sounding a little incredulous. "You want to go to a party to gather intel. It's fine. Not like we have anything better to do."
It looks like Katsuki won't make him work for it this time.
no subject
Machop, in the meantime, grumbles as Quilava twists around and licks him on the round of a shoulder. He puts his hand right into her face in turn and ruffles her flaming mane between her brows. He is good and strong enough to withstand the damage if her flames do so to him; fire Pokemon like Ponyta get to choose. Machop presses Quilava's head down while standing up and shifts into a fighting pose toward the Sandshrew. "Chop! Maaachopchop!!" We're the best and you better give us respect!
"For real...? Just like that? You're good?" Kirishima balks only a little, shoving as much of camp as he can into or onto his own backpack, naturally. Then he shifts to a grin. "I mean, yeah. Obviously. All we gotta do is make it to the Pokemon Center outside the entrance of Union Cave and we'll be on our way. Shouldn't take more than a couple hours."
no subject
"Don't sound so stupefied," Katsuki snorts, rolling his eyes. "I don't want to deal with your kicked puppy expression."
Honestly he knows that Kirishima is far more social than he. The other probably needs this far more than Katsuki does. Being around him can't always be easy and Bakugou is aware of that, if nothing else. The redhead really should be around other people just to get a break from the prickly teen. Katsuki knows all of this and that's why he's going to agree. The dumbass probably wouldn't go if Bakugou flat out refuses and he won't be responsible for that.
Meanwhile, Machop has nothing to worry about. Quilava's flames aren't lit - she finds it hard to rest when she does. So the Fighting-type can do as he pleases, though Quilava does huff and snort at the thing for using her head in such a manner. Sandshrew, on the other hand, just tilts its head to the side as he watches. Pushing down on someone's head isn't very demonstrative of showing respect.
no subject
"ALRIGHT!" Kirishima has apparently ignored the analogy/insult(?) in favor of getting excited about the party ahead of them. He springs up, bag over his shoulder with things from camp still partially sticking out of it every which way. "A party in this place has gotta be awesome! AND we're gonna get to fly over there on the back of a big Pokemon!" True, Bakugou could fly in the past, but not for super long distances. Kirishima certainly hasn't had much of that experience himself.
Machop was using Quilava's head to more push himself to a stand, but it's pretty on-brand that he forgets to take his hand off of her. His social awareness is... not the best, to say the least. He's distracted glancing over to his trainer's outburst, but it seems to just be a case of Kirishima being Kirishima. The snort gets him looking back and he ends up just patting Quilava's head, considering Sandshrew once more. There's a little gesture of his hand and a growl. So what else can you do? Sandshrew isn't even on his own team, but apparently Machop seems to think he's part of the interview process.
no subject
Now Bakugou really doesn't understand what Kirishima is getting all worked up about. Flying on the back of some giant Pokemon doesn't sound all that appealing. Neither does a party where there is going to be so many people. So many people in one place. Katsuki has a hard enough time dealing with parties with his own classmates. This is going to be so many more people than that. It's not really settling well with him at all.
"Doesn't take much to impress you, now does it?" Katsuki snorts. "So come on and let's go already."
Then he turns towards the Pokemon themselves. Don't think Bakugou hadn't actually noticed their antics. "And you all knock it off or you won't go to this party crap."
no subject
"Ready when you are!" Kirishima grins, toothily, where he holds his own laden bag over his shoulders. Machop, for his part at the chastisement, perks up and puts his fists impetuously on his hips. You're not his boss, Bakugou! Kirishima would never go anywhere without him... not that he thinks he was misbehaving!
no subject
"Been ready," he replies, motioning for Quilava. The Pokemon stands and nods, igniting the flames on her head and back. There. Between her and the Litwick that's floating around, they have plenty of light to navigate this cave system by. Otherwise Katsuki pretty much ignores Machop and the sass he gives off.
Sandshrew seems to understand that it's time to go though. He toddles after Katsuki. Katsuki who is already starting to move out. The pathway inside the cave is pretty well worn so it's not like they're going to trip over rocks. However that doesn't really supply them with the way out now does it? The two teens are still going to have to figure that one out.
no subject
Kirishima's happy to watch their back.
And for a long few minutes? Everything is fine. It's long enough the boys might have relaxed and just when they enter into a wider chamber?
It starts with a great sigh, wind much bigger than one man's lungs can do, puffing down the tunnel. What follows is the distant laughter of a child.
Kirishima turns, purses his lips. He thinks about asking Bakugou about it but he doesn't. Trainers are down here, after all.
no subject
It's not the laughter that catches his attention though. That great sigh is what brings him up short. Katsuki doesn't get startled. However it does sort of put him on immediate edge.
"You hear that?"
no subject
When Kirishima's friend draws up short, the redhead nearly walks into his back because he's too busy looking behind him. Machop's hand tugging at the back of his shirt means he just bumps against Katsuki's backpack.
"I heard something. Not sure what it is..." He replies, uncertain if he's more relieved or unnerved that his more sensible counterpart has addressed the topic. Quiet now, he strains his ears to try and hear something else, but the only thing that comes to him is a yawning silence beyond the sound of their breathing and the crackle of the fire Pokemon.
no subject
He does make a sound of irritation as Kirishima just about walks right into him. There's almost a comment on the tip of his tongue telling the redhead to look where he's going. What prevents him from doing so is the sound of more giggling echoing against the cave walls.
"You definitely had to hear that."
no subject
He grabs his backpack straps resolutely and begins to take a step around Bakugou only to stop short from a scraping sound coming up behind them. It's a sound Kirishima reads as nails clacking against stone as it's joined with a low growl. He jolts and whirls around, as does Machop. The fighting Pokemon growls right back, shifting into a ready stance for whatever dares to come into the firelight.
But nothing does. The clicking sounds like it stops just short and the flame is wafted by some puff of air. Kirishima imagines some sort of creature breathing just outside the radius of what they can see, kept at bay by the light.
no subject
"Ah huh..."
Then there's the sound of scraping and a whoosh as it feels like something has zipped over their heads. Now that does make Bakugou flinch, immediately put on guard. He puts up his hands, even if his Quirk is gone, ready to take on whatever is trying to get at them.
"Stop screwing around with us! Come out!"
no subject
And only silence meets them. It isn't a perfect silence - there's the breathing between all of them and the distant drip of water from the cave system - but it's enough to make Kirishima wish they could snuff their lights so their eyes had a hope of adjusting to the dark. At the same time, part of him believes they're only safe now because of the light.
Slowly, he backs up until his hand finds Bakugou's side, quickly relocating to the shoulder. They're back to back now, accounting for the backpacks slotted alongside one another.
"L-Let's keep moving, huh? You know the way out, right?" Kirishima's hand moves off of Bakugou's shoulder to lace fingers around his backpack. "We'll watch the back."
no subject
He feels Kirishima at his back and, really, in a fight? Bakugou feels a bit more comfortable with that. Shitty Hair is his best friend and there's no one else that he trusts more at the moment. The hand moving to his shoulder is the only reason that Katsuki stands down.
"No I don't know the way out. I've never been here before and there's no map..."
Though he's going to start to move forward anyway. They'll have to run into the exit eventually?
no subject
"I could send out Onix? She could burrow us a way out!" The redhead offers, a little hopefully, as they move along. Thing is they're now entering into a tunnel where a massive snake made out of rock appearing could make things unstable for them. It's an aspect he's considered, but they can always go back to the open area they just came from, right?
As Quilava, and consequently Bakugou, round the next corner in the tunnel, there's a blood-curdling scream. Nothing jumps out of the darkness, mind, but the blonde might be buffeted back a little with the force of the sound. His backpack jerks as Kirishima jumps and grips it.
no subject
"Are you stupid?" Bakugou hisses at the suggestion. "It's way too narrow for that!"
No, they aren't going to backtrack. They're just going to push forward! However, Bakugou does send Litwick to the back to give Machop and Kirishima more light. He can also feel something like a breeze against his neck. Something is having a good ol time at their expense and it is making the blonde quite irritable. This doesn't stop him from also jumping at the scream.
"This is stupid!"
There's definitely got to be a way to figure out what it is that's causing this!
no subject
The answer is a distant giggle, nefarious and childlike, followed by whispers that sound like they're coming from the very walls around them.
"Keep goin', Bakugou." There's a tense, growling sort of quality to the redheaded teen's voice. "Find some part that isn't narrow."
