Someone recognizes her! This is a new experience for Kiri, and a wonderful one. She hops up and down in glee and claps her hands. "You're a kenku!"

A moment after that, she uses a different woman's voice, and points to herself for good measure. "I am Kiri."

Thorne giggles. "Nope, I'm a human right now. But that's fine. Hello Kiri! I'm Thorne!"

"Hello Kiri! I'm Thorne!" She doesn't have to mimic everything, but she's also at that age where playing copycat is a fun game in addition to being her only means of verbal communication.

Games aside, Kiri does have a problem. She stops and thinks for a long moment, and then in the first voice she'd used, "Do you live around here?"

Maybe this person who knows her can help!

That just gets Thorne to giggle again. "How are you at tongue-twisters, Kiri? Rubber baby buggy bumpers! She sells seashells at the seashore!"

But then she shakes her head. "I don't live around here," she says, soberly. "My brother does, though. In Goldenrod. It should be..."

She frowns, looking around.

"It should be somewhere," she finishes. "I think."

Kiri hops up and down, clapping her hands. Within three tries she's got it. "Rubber baby buggy bumpers! She sells seashells at the seashore!"

Kiri looks around too. "Somewhere I think."

Then she points at herself and in a different voice, says, "Sidekick?"

"Um, sure," she says. "You can be my sidekick for a little while, if you'd like. At least until we find some of your friends. Uh... but I might not be here longer than a day or two more. Are you okay with that, kiddo?"

[The hesitation says 'not really' but then Kiri stands a little taller and nods firmly. In a man's voice with a soft German (ish) accent, she says:]

This means we are friends.

[And then she reaches out in the universal manner of a young child who wants to hold hands for comfort.]

Thorne takes that offered hand and gives it a squeeze. "Friends. We can find my big brother, maybe, if we can't find any of your people. He lives here. I bet you could be his sidekick after me."

Kiri considers this for a little bit. If she can't find Jester or the Schuesters and nobody knows how to get back to the city, finding a new family will work, right? This nice lady probably has a nice big brother.

She mimics someone else this time. "Okay, okay, okay."

Then she squeezes back and looks up at Throne hopefully. Where to?

"We were in Goldenrod before," Thorne considers. "I think if you've got somewhere you really want to be, you can rely on the weird weekend to take you there. So just hold my hand, okay, Kiri? And we'll try to walk to the house we're staying in."

Kiri squeezes again and hops up and down, switching back to her most common voice for mimicking. "Okay! Yeah!"

"Let's go!"

And actually, since there's a cute little kid with her, Thorne will sing a walking song for Kiri as they go along. Luckily, she knows just the one.

"Hey, let's go! Hey let's go!
We're happy as can be!
Let's go walking, you and me!
Ready, set, c'mon let's go!"

Kiri is delighted. She can only successfully mimic the tune on the verses, but is able to sing along with the chorus by the second time.

Once they're done singing, Thorne giggles. "You're really good at that, Kiri. Do you think you'll be a bard when you grow up?"

Kiri chirps a couple times while she considers that. Her mimic is in a woman's voice that's new to Thorne. "If it bleeds we can kill it!"

In a different woman's voice, scratchier, she starts chanting. "Welcome to the Mighty Nein!"

Bard? Maybe. Adventurer of some kind? Definitely.

"You can kill it," Thorne demurs. "Or Steven can. I'm-- trying to avoid that shit. But I'm pleased to join the Mighty Nine--where's the rest of us?"

Kiri whistles happily, and then at the last question suddenly stops. Her expression falls, her whole posture droops, and even her steps start dragging. She doesn't say anything in answer.

"Ah shit," Thorne says. "Sorry. I-- probably shouldn't have asked, huh."

[copykiri]

"It doesn't matter, though," Kiri says in the German-like man's voice. She squeezes Thorne's hand, trying to put on a brave face.
