"Pokemon," he echoes flatly. "You mean that kids game from the nineties?"

The Spinarak chirps brightly, waving its front legs excitedly, and when Bailey glances down at it his stern angles soften, just a little. "...and apparently I'm his trainer."

"Yep," Steven says, popping the p. "I mean, I never played it—I was into Magic at that point—but evidently my little sister did. And yeah, looks like Tad's your guaranteed starting Pokemon. Everyone gets one when they get taken to this world, even in weird weekends."

"Doesn't seem on the nose, does it?" His tone suggests it's rhetorical, though, as he lifts an eyebrow at Tad again, who's flexing his own little spider fangs at Casper. "Skitterskulk getting a spider and a Darkling getting a ghost."

"I mean yeah," Steven admits. "Ridiculously on the nose—but I do like ghosts. And our other resident Darkling got a Porygon, so they aren't always that on the nose. Even if the resident Fairest got an extra sparkly Ponyta variant from another region."

"The Fairest got a sparkling fucking horse." He doesn't even sound surprised, just. Kind of amusedly resigned, to the stupid bullshit fate has consigned him too. "Savage."

[fingersandteeth]

"It's even half Fairy type when it makes its final evolution," Steven says with a bemused shake of his head. "Anyway, Tyler, our resident Wizened, got a Natu--those are little psychic birds--but I don't think that was because of his seeming but because she could make for a decent assistance Pokemon."

What. No.

He's rather glad now that his face is far less expressive under his Mask than on it, because he'd be looking rather a lot more horrified than he is now.

"The hell would he be needing something like that for?" He should check, first, maybe it's a coincidence.

"He's deaf," Steven says. "He used to get along by texting and by writing in a notebook before Isis got good at psychic translating--I helped him train her--and more of us learned Australian sign language."

Well, there's certainly an attitude shift from Bailey at that news. He wasn't exactly nice before, by any stretch, but now there's an air of open resentment, a crease of his upper lip around the extensions.

"And you actually care about him?"

[fingersandteeth]

"I mean, yes? He's a good friend?" Steven frowns--and then his eyes suddenly go wide. "Oh hell. You know him."

Someone from Tyler's future? Did Future Tyler end up in Ireland?

Oh good, he doesn't have to hide his displeasure.

(Part of him isn't surprised: even Before, Tyler was reticent, and Bailey was always something of an outsider to the group. But part of him still hurts.)

"He doesn't like talking about me, does he now?" His tone is casual, so much so it flips around to spiteful. "Always was a private little wazzock."

[fingersandteeth]

"He doesn't like to talk about anyone he got taken with," Steven says, "and the rare times he does, it's nearly always vague and without names. He's mentioned a boyfriend, the friend he got out with, and his ex-, who I evidently remind him of when I'm being an ass--which is fine, because he's got the same hair-trigger temper as my ex-."

A thought occurs to Steven. "Oh hell, are you his ex-?"

The question shocks laughter out of Bailey, and there's no hiding how it sounds rather conspicuously like the evil cackle of a B-movie villain, even if it sounds entirely unforced otherwise.

"Fuck off, boyo, I'd never. Not himself or anyone else." Perks of being asexual: no relationship drama. "Though funny you mention him, since we were usually on stage together."

[fingersandteeth]

Steven, at least, can appreciate the artistry of that evil laugh. He's entirely aware of his own penchant for dark and sinister chuckling when in the right mood.

"Were you?" he asks, curious despite himself.

[itsybitsybastard]

"Well, a good villain always needs his slavering, monstrous pet to sic on innocent townsfolk, don't they?" He lifts a hand to his breast and makes a mocking bow. "I'm after being cast a miserable hand, but I think Gil's might have been worse."

[fingersandteeth]

"Gil," he says, frowning, because that name... feels like he ought to know it and he doesn't. "You were the villain, Tyler was the narrator, and Gil was the monster?"

"We were. And his man was the star, of course," he says flatly. "Of course Tyler's fucking boyfriend gets pride of place in the center of it all."

[fingersandteeth]

"But he didn't get out and you both did," Steven says—not sure how he knows 'Gil' did, unless...

Australian. Future Steven's best friend had been Australian and Steven had lost his name after that last weird weekend.

"Gil looks like a Beast," he says very casually, "but he isn't, is he? He's an Ogre."

Bailey goes very still, for a moment. "He is. But he didn't get out."

[fingersandteeth]

Steven shakes his head. "He will. I've met him, the way I'm meeting you now. He gets out eventually."

[itsybitsybastard]

"No, he won't." His voice is cold now, with a clipped edge to his words. "He's dead."

[fingersandteeth]

"And the Keepers don't bring people back?" Steven challenges him. "I met him. I don't know how he did it. He had a hell of a lot of scars. He either got brought back and got out or it was a parallel universe. Take your pick."

[itsybitsybastard]

His palps flex stiffly. "Ours didn't touch us. Not... most of us. Sure he didn't touch Gil. Wi--" He catches himself, and takes a shallow breath. "The Old Crone would fix him, when the Hero and I were after killing him."

[fingersandteeth]

"Well," Steven says, softly. "I guess you're from a parallel world, then." He's quiet for a moment. "I'm sorry, Doc."

It sounds like he either means it or is really good at faking.

Bailey seems to defrost a little then, if only so he can give the man a scrutinous look.

"Are you, or are you just expecting me to believe that you are?" He folds his arms (and thanks whatever being still remains out there that he only has the two). "It's not like you know me well enough to care."
