I mean, you're from the future, right? I assume you're from the future relative to the 2010s, anyway. So I can see how it's just-- one of those things no one does anymore.

Tabletop games are a lot like playing pretend with your friends when you were little, but with much more math.

Are... you guys still playing?

It's complicated, but yeah, sort of. And we're not, unfortunately. Our dungeon master—the person running the game—disappeared in October.

[He sounds kind of subdued there—it's kind of obvious he misses them.]

[Maybe he shouldn't have asked. But he was curious about the game and... well. Here they are. He grimaces, then reaches out (and up) to pat the other man on the shoulder.]

Maybe... sometime you could get another group together?

I'd like that, actually, [Steven says, his head under the cloak hood turning just a little.] Though I might want to find someone else to run it. I've got the reputation of being a killer DM back home.

You know, some people here might take that as a challenge.

[Steven laughs.] I've had that before. Eventually people get tired of TPKs.

[Steven sighs.]

When you play D&D--which is like pretend but with dice and more math, to introduce some controlled randomness into everything--if one of the challenges the DM who is running the game puts forward for the players to solve ends up getting their pretend selves all killed instead, that's known as a Total Party Kill or a TPK. At which point everyone rolls up a new character--that is, creates the stats for the next person they're going to pretend to be--and we start all over again.

I'm... kind of infamous for provoking TPKs when I run things. It's what gets me called a 'killer DM' and why I'm usually not the best person to have in that position.

Is that even any fun, though? Killing everyone off.

... it can be? There's that moment of semi-sadistic satisfaction when you realize they fell into your trap, mwahahaha. [He pronounces the syllables of the laugh outloud, deadpan.]

But yeah. That's about right.

If you ever get a group together, maybe I'll look into it.

Sure. I might see if Armin would want to try to run again... he was doing the other game, but then half his players disappeared, so. [Steven shrugs.] But yeah, yeah. If we do end up doing the thing, I'll let you know.
