Another year has come and gone, and like every year, revellers have gathered together to count out the old year, looking forward to the new one. Glasses of champagne have been filled, children have been put to bed, and while most cities around Johto and Kanto have their own local fireworks show, the biggest and most televised fireworks display has always been prepared in Viridian City. No one knows where the tradition originated exactly, but everybody agrees that if you want to see some truly awesome fireworks, Viridian is the place to be.

As the last few minutes of the year tick slowly down towards zero, the crowds in Viridian City turn an expectant eye towards the sky. And with them, thousands of others who have gathered behind their television sets. The mayor of Viridian leads the countdown, her voice amplified through speakers so everyone can hear her.

"Five... four... three... two... one--"

The 'Happy New Year!' is drowned out by the crackle and whistle of fireworks going up, exploding across the sky in dazzling colours and intricate patterns. Bright light washes over the partying crowd, reflecting in the wide eyes of the few children who have managed to stay awake until this latest of hours. All seems well--

Until--

Suddenly--

"What is that?"

Among the glittering explosions, a strange and unusual pattern begins to take shape. A great yellow eye seems to blink and open against the night sky, several blood red... are they tears? dripping down from its golden oculus. But more worrying still are the letters that appear beneath it, bright against the sky, and lingering far longer than any fireworks would.
