Bakers, start your baking!

Who: Everybody!
Where: Riegfried and Soy's mansion
When: January 15th; day time for the cooking part, evening for the mingle part.
Summary: Come one, come all to the newest contest hosted by Riegfried and Soy. Today's theme: cooking!

[Daytime - The kitchens]

Throughout the day, the kitchens will be open to all contestants, though any casual onlookers --human, pokemon, or otherwise-- will be shooed out to prevent any cheating.

Each contestant will be directed to a gleaming counter, where they will be able to find everything from your basic whisk and spatula to gleaming kitchen machinery fancy enough to make any cook feel faint with envy. Each counter comes complete with a small fridge (should you need to chill any of your ingredients), an oven, a stove, a microwave -- really, anything you can imagine and it is there. Riegfried and Soy clearly didn't want anyone to run into the issue of not having the right equipment for the job.

At the back of the room are the fridges: tall, imposing fridges made of gleaming metal stocked full of every sort of ingredient you could possibly think of. And next to the fridges, contestants can find rows and rows of shelves, each nearly bowing under the weight of the products placed on them -- from fresh fruit, to spices, to rice and noodles. If you need it, you can find it.

Riegfried and Soy will be flitting around the room like a pair of extravagant Butterfrees, happy to engage contestants in small interviews. Everything for the camera, baby! Because those are also there; they are clearly trying to stay out of everybody's way, but small, Rotom-powered cameras flit around the room for close-ups, while cameramen and women with heavy-duty equipment get the distance shots. Hopefully, you haven't got an issue with stage fright.

[Evening - The show]

And when all is said and done, and the last dishes have been cooked, it's time for the actual show. There is some time between the actual cooking and this part of the evening, during which contestants have a chance to change their clothing and freshen up, but before too long, the mansion's doors open to the guests, who are herded by the cheerful hosts to an enormous hall.

The hall itself is set up with all manner of comforts. There are some small tables and chairs for anyone who wants to sit down for a while. Long tables line the sides of the room, absolutely laden with all manner of refreshments. There is even a special table set aside where the dishes the contestants made (at least the ones that made it to this part of the evening) are displayed and ready for tasting.

The schedule for the night is rather straightforward.

After some meet-and-greet and time for every last guest to arrive, the day's events (cut and edited by a very exhausted camera crew) will be projected onto a huge screen for all to enjoy. The votes will be tallied afterward and awards and prizes will be handed out. The rest of the evening will give the winners a chance to celebrate, the losers a chance to commiserate, and everybody else to clear the buffet of everything edible.

[There's still a sort of - tickle in Dimitri's heart that Claude is just... revealing all of this so easily to him now. Like when he was a child, and Sylvain would sneak the rest of them into the stables to show off favorite horses. He tries to ignore it and stay on task, listening carefully. This will be good for the future... He thinks.]

[For the present, he just focuses on what Claude is saying, and his fortunately good reaction to the bread.]

It is the second, actually... I do not believe I managed to get the first batch correct, at least in terms of what other people would like. [So him and his rat just ate the heck out of that.] Since our hosts have provided us with so much food that I have never seen or handled before, I thought I could experiment leisurely, and make sure that I created something good enough.

I believe that for myself... Well, I am not skilled for on-the-fly cooking. I will perhaps need that much time.

I've been experimenting a lot myself! Although, uh, I don't know if I've managed to show the same level of restraint as you have... [Claude looks back at his own workstation, which is an active disaster area.] I did put cheese in it for you, though! I don't know how you handle spice, but maybe that'll help you put up with it.

[Dimitri can't help but look a little embarrassed at being called out on cheese so early... Listen. It has that good texture...]

[Anyway. Anyway.]

I have never had anything particularly spicy, so I suppose this would be my first experience with it.

Well, you're in for a treat!...or not, potentially. Some people find it too intense, while other people love it. You might need to build up a tolerance, though, if you've never had it much before. Fodlan really doesn't seem to have much spice in its cuisine at all compared to Almyra's. I can't tell you how much I missed that in Fodlan over the years. Everything just tasted kind of bland without the spices I'm used to.

There seems to be all kind of food variety here, though! It's still not exactly the Almyran cuisine I know, but it's a lot closer.

And it may be a lot closer to the dream you have, yes?

[Dimitri keeps a hold of the tray with the different other types of fried bread, and glances out to the rest of the kitchen.]

So many different varieties of food... That must mean this world has access to all sorts of different lands, different ideas. And if weapons are barred here... Perhaps, even despite the bandit attempts and the other general failures which trail after people no matter where, this place has found a kind of peace that allows for such easy and happy trading.

....But I am getting ahead of myself. I would not mind trying your recipe, when it has gotten to a point where it can be tried.

[Dimitri is just thinking of texture here. Spice isn't something he's even remotely thinking of.]
vrdantwind: (What could you be afraid of)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-01-19 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. [Claude's eyes soften.] Ever since I got here...I've been fascinated by that. Not just by the world itself, but by all the people from all different kinds of worlds who've been pulled here, more or less existing in harmony. I'm sure there's friction I haven't seen, but as far as I can tell, none of it is because anyone hates anyone else for simply not being from where they're from. It's just individual conflicts like you'd get anywhere.

Still, this place isn't completely ideal. Those of us from different worlds haven't exactly been able to bring a lot of our culture here with us. I want people from all different walks of life to mix and appreciate each other, but that shouldn't mean a lack of expression for individual cultures - it should be a mingling of them. It's obviously a byproduct of the weird way this place works, but seeing how there really seems to be a whole lot of different foods, ideas, and influences here when there's really only one overall mingled culture...it helps me consider the kinds of things I want to avoid or emphasize in the implementing of my dream. I want people and cultures to mingle, not blend together until you lose the differences in homogeneity.

[Claude will be happy to find that a lot of of the homogeneity he's currently seeing is regional, and that once he gets to Kanto and Sevii there's more variety. For now, though, he's mostly seeing a monoculture.]

...but you're right, why are we talking about all this heavy stuff now? [He finishes off the last of his current piece of fried bread with a last big bite.] Was there any other varieties of bread you made that you want me to try before I get back to cooking? That curry's not going to finish itself.

[If it were anyone other than Dimitri, he'd hesitate to recommend trying his curry. He's...aware it's not going great. But Dimitri can't really taste things, so how bad can he find it? Aside from the burn of the spice, of course, but Claude already warned him about that and he seems ready to try it anyhow.]

Well, it is only one country. Perhaps other places...

[Later, later. For now, he glances down at his offerings, and holds up the sweet variant.]

Just this - I would like to know that the sweetness is at a decent enough level. Hob has a slight sweet tooth, so I am worried it may be a little overboard, going off of only her impressions.
vrdantwind: (I got plans)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-01-20 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
True. And we haven't even seen all of this country yet. I'm just talking about what we've seen so far, so who knows what else is out there.

Anyway, I'm happy to try anything you guys have made. [He takes the sweet bread, but doesn't take a bite yet - first, he's curious.] So what'd you put into this one to give it its sweetness? [It was easier to guess with the savory stuff.]
nastyboy: (It is my duty and my pleasure)

[personal profile] nastyboy 2021-01-20 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it is the one I am least certain of... I added some sugar to the mixture this time, and some honey, on top. It's rather simple...

I would like to try more ideas along this vein. [He wishes Mercedes were here, she would know...]
vrdantwind: (I'll show you this side of the world)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-01-23 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you less certain of it, exactly? [Claude takes a bite, and hums appreciatively.] Either way, your worries are totally unfounded. It's sweet, but not too sweet. Which I like, personally. I'm not anti-sweet to the degree Felix is, but I do tend to lean towards savory.

[Claude may have endured entire passionate rants from Lysithea about how could Felix possibly NOT APPRECIATE THE GLORIOUSNESS OF SWEETS, how could anyone have such POOR TASTE, surely his mouth must be DEFECTIVE - ]

That is good to hear. [Dimitri lets out a relieved breath.] I do not have much experience with sweets, so...

[They've always seemed like a waste on him, really, unless they were freshly baked, and that only applies for some sweet things.]
