Summary: Come one, come all to the newest contest hosted by Riegfried and Soy. Today's theme: cooking!








[Daytime - The kitchens]

Throughout the day, the kitchens will be open to all contestants, though any casual onlookers --human, pokemon, or otherwise-- will be shooed out to prevent any cheating.

Each contestant will be directed to a gleaming counter, where they will be able to find everything from your basic whisk and spatula to gleaming kitchen machinery fancy enough to make any cook feel faint with envy. Each counter comes complete with a small fridge (should you need to chill any of your ingredients), an oven, a stove, a microwave -- really, anything you can imagine and it is there. Riegfried and Soy clearly didn't want anyone to run into the issue of not having the right equipment for the job.

At the back of the room are the fridges: tall, imposing fridges made of gleaming metal stocked full of every sort of ingredient you could possibly think of. And next to the fridges, contestants can find rows and rows of shelves, each nearly bowing under the weight of the products placed on them -- from fresh fruit, to spices, to rice and noodles. If you need it, you can find it.

Riegfried and Soy will be flitting around the room like a pair of extravagant Butterfrees, happy to engage contestants in small interviews. Everything for the camera, baby! Because those are also there; they are clearly trying to stay out of everybody's way, but small, Rotom-powered cameras flit around the room for close-ups, while cameramen and women with heavy-duty equipment get the distance shots. Hopefully, you haven't got an issue with stage fright.



[Evening - The show]

And when all is said and done, and the last dishes have been cooked, it's time for the actual show. There is some time between the actual cooking and this part of the evening, during which contestants have a chance to change their clothing and freshen up, but before too long, the mansion's doors open to the guests, who are herded by the cheerful hosts to an enormous hall.

The hall itself is set up with all manner of comforts. There are some small tables and chairs for anyone who wants to sit down for a while. Long tables line the sides of the room, absolutely laden with all manner of refreshments. There is even a special table set aside where the dishes the contestants made (at least the ones that made it to this part of the evening) are displayed and ready for tasting.

The schedule for the night is rather straightforward.

After some meet-and-greet and time for every last guest to arrive, the day's events (cut and edited by a very exhausted camera crew) will be projected onto a huge screen for all to enjoy. The votes will be tallied afterward and awards and prizes will be handed out. The rest of the evening will give the winners a chance to celebrate, the losers a chance to commiserate, and everybody else to clear the buffet of everything edible.

Akane shakes her head. "No," she says. "It sounds-- well. Nice, in a sort of chilly sort of way. And a lot like Sapporo. That's the northernmost island of my country. We went to a place sort of like it here for two weeks back in August, called Sinnoh.

"I'm from Furinkan. It's a town in Nerima ward, which is part of Tokyo, the capital. But by the time you get to my part of it, it's less big city and more town. It's on Honshu, which is the biggest island--my entire country is islands."

Sapporo and Sinnoh... Dimitri makes a note to remember those names, just in case. For now, he lets himself be the listener as Akane speaks, and smiles a little bit as she describes it all.

"That sounds nice," he says, nodding. "I like places like those - where you are not quite in the thick of so much hustle and bustle, but still surrounded by friends and family. Does your home being on a series of islands- well, I was going to ask if it affects living there, but I suppose it must."

(Hopefully he's going to remember what Akane should have actually said before the person transcribing this got the city and the island mixed up. Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the island. Sapporo is the big city on it.)

"I mean, I guess?" Akane shrugs. "I don't really know what it's like to live on a proper continent and if there's anything different. It's easier for us to isolate ourselves, I guess, but we aren't doing that anymore."

"No, I think it is just stubbornness that lends itself to isolation," Dimitri says, shaking his head. "Stubbornness, and thinking the only way you need to know is what you already know. That is how it was for Fodlan. If not for different groups splitting off to forge their own homes in the land, I sometimes think it would not even have the countries that it does."

"I think being an island chain helps with actually doing it, though," Akane says. "If you're on a continent with another country, then you can close your borders but people can still sneak in on foot. It's harder when they need boats to do it."

"Possibly... Although I am afraid that I know less about that." Dimitri leans back thoughtfully in his seat, thinking about all of the different histories he was required to learn as crown prince. "The one island nation near Fodlan was caught up in at least one war with the mainland, so I cannot use that as a good point of reference."

Also, now that he's thinking about it, he thinks they all might be in different wars with all of their neighbors at any given time? Saints. Their continent is a mess.

"Japan's had wars on the mainland too," Akane says. "I think last time we tried to take the war to the mainland and to a bunch of other islands instead first? But that was over forty years ago."

Over forty years ago... Dimitri glances over her again, taking in her young age. "It sounds as though it was before your time, then. That's good. Wars are... dreadful to experience, no matter what side you are on."

"Yeah," Akane says. "I suppose that's why we stopped having an army, just a special defense force. Well, that and the Americans wouldn't let us have one."

That all sounds good, and interesting, up until it doesn't. Dimitri frowns slightly, trying to think on how he can ask about this... respectfully. It makes him think too much of unpleasant things in Faerghus. "May I ask why another country has such say over your military?"

Akane looks away and says, awkwardly, "I think it was part of the treaty when we surrendered at the end of the war?"

"I... see." Dimitri visibly restrains himself, fighting against the scowl he really wants to make. He doesn't know the whole story, and he has to remember that. "I apologize for the awkward topic; my own homeland experiences many wars, you see."

"It's all right," Akane says awkwardly. "It's not your world. You wouldn't have known."

Clearly it's time to move this conversation along. "So what kind of Palien companions do you prefer, if I may ask?" he starts, knowing this is very obvious and maybe kind of clumsy as a way of turning a conversation around. That... just can't be helped.

"Cute ones," Akane says promptly, then shakes her head. "I don't mean to sound shallow. But I like being able to hug and hold my pokemon. That's why T-chan has an everstone, so he'll always be small enough for me to pick up."

"You don't have to worry. Everyone has a preference for certain things," Dimitri assures her, and smiles. "There were many girls in the academy I went to who liked such things as well. I believe that's normal."

He'd mention Ingrid and pegasi, but those aren't really cuddling creatures in... any way.

"Felix, my boyfriend-" One of them, anyway. "-he tries very hard to make a team that will help him against gyms, but he has a terribly sweet fondness for cats. It's really rather cute."

Akane smiles. "That does sound cute. And I mean, I like cute things, but I'm not weird about it. I don't steal other people's cute things and give them new names, like some people I could mention."

Cough cough, Azusa Shiratori, cough.

....Well.

"That... sounds rather specific," Dimitri says slowly, maybe more than a little concerned. That doesn't happen all the time, does it...?

"There was this girl back home that did that," Akane admits. "She stole my pet pig P-chan and named him 'Charlotte' and Ranma and I had to fight a martial arts skating match to get him back."

That sure is a sentence she just uttered.

...Huh.

That is certainly a sentence.

Dimitri tilts his head to the side slowly, trying to just take all that in. "She sounds like a rather selfish individual," he says after a moment, which is true and by far the easiest part of this story to digest. Some people just steal animals for whatever reason. Sometimes it's just a matter of one's pet straying, and the thief not realizing it's an animal already owned. Other times, well... Other times it's more purposeful.

"May I ask how martial arts combines with ice skating?"

Akane thinks for a moment, because honestly, she's pretty used to people trying to combine martial arts with everything. Even tea ceremony.

"You know how regular figure skating is two people doing their routine on the ice, trying to look pretty and impressive? Martial arts figure skating is four people on the ice, using their routines to do that and spoil things for the other pair. Basically."

You know, when she says that so clearly... "It is such an obvious combination, I wonder why it never occurred to me before," Dimitri muses, not thinking of things like most people don't want to die from ice skate induced blood loss. "I will have to remember to relay this to a lover of mine.... He is rather interested in ice skating."

Something occurs to him, and he pauses a moment. "I hate to impose upon a stranger, but should we ever be in the same city with an ice rink of sorts... Would you mind giving a demonstration some time? He would be glad to see it, and he likes iceskating with people. I understand completely if you refuse, of course."

Akane blinks. "I mean... I guess I can. Though, um, I'm not Azusa Shiratori. I mean, I'm an okay skater and I'm... better than a lot of people at martial arts, but it's not my actual form? But I do know the basics... even if I'll need a partner? I mean, there's ways to do it without a partner, but I learned pairs skating, not single." She bites her lip, frowning. "I wonder if Scorpia can ice skate or Cassandra can... or maybe Mr Solus?" She can't ask Dirk, not with his broken leg.

"It is alright." Dimitri chuckles. "We are not professional skaters either, so we will all be on equal level. Once you show us the basics, I imagine we can fumble our way from there. Although, if you need a partner..." Dimitri tilts his head to the side, considering.

"If you would not object to it, I could manage somewhat. I've never had a problem with lifting others."
