The Universal Constancy of Hallmark Holidays [closed]

Who: Emet-Selch, Dirk, and Hythlodaeus
Where: South of Goldenrod
When: 2/14
Summary: Just a trio of dudes going for some horseback riding, nothing to see here.
Rating: pg-13, who knows where their convos will go.
Log:

It's early in the morning when Emet and Hythlodaeus rise for this particular outing. It's likely that Dirk awoke with them, or perhaps he was already awake this whole time, with him it's hard to tell. Either way, there's a purposefulness to their movements that is otherwise lacking any other day, and with limited information given to Dirk on what they're doing (besides the theme of outfit, and their surprising stock of fitting apparel for him), it's all likely confusing. With what arbitrary fussiness that is to be expected to rise between Dirk and Hythlodaeus taken care of, and the trio having made their way out of Goldenrod proper, they can begin on this little venture.

Emet himself is dressed appropriately, with some few layers below the outfit to keep himself warm. He looks to his company as they release their steeds. The cold of the air will hardly matter with the warmth of the Rapidashes and Ponytas, of course, but still Emet felt the need to bundle. With the horses already saddled up (Hythlodaeus and Emet saw to this before putting them back into their balls), Emet makes his way over to one, stroking its strong neck with his gloved hand as he glances over at Dirk.

"As it may be apparent, Hythlodaeus and myself wished to enjoy a morning horseback ride with you, and it would only do that we were appropriately dressed for such an outing. I do so hope you are not displeased with the obscurity leading up to this, I had wanted it to be somewhat of a surprise for you, my dear."

"Only the highest grade, certified and notarized."

Hythlodaeus pats his shoulder as he walks past, turning to face the other two as he unsheathes his sword. He then twists the scabbard and unscrews the hilt.

"Hold out your hands," he says sweetly and softly to his companions, still working a slight shiver out of himself-- even with the assorted horses and his many layers.

Whatever is in his scabbard rattles softly. Peeking within: sugar cubes.

For the rest of it, Hythlodaeus is dressed like he stepped out of northern Japan circa 1906. Dressed in kimono, hakama, and deer skin(??), he looks the part to compete in a winter archery competition— save for the most necessary item.

Honestly? Dirk never even questioned Hythlodaeus' choice of attire. To some extent, that's not surprising; Hythlodaeus' personality makes the potentially esoteric chatacter of his choice the only logical conclusion, and Dirk's more than familiar with Japanese period anime, so he recognised it generally enough as something meant for riding. Which was the theme of the day. What is there to question?

Especially now, as it makes ever more sense why he was actually presented with this theme to begin with.

The, uh.... let's call it a festive take on a traditional weapon has him a bit torn. The gimmick is good, he'll give Hythlodaeus that. And it's not like real swords are allowed, unless they're possessed by magical ghosts or produced by magical ghosts for the apparent purpose of being possessed.

Which is part of the reason he did not put his hand out until he saw exactly what the 'trick' involved in this 'sword' might be. Once he sees the secret contained within is no more than simple sugar cubes, though, he plays along--accepting a couple of cubes for Acorn, who takes them with his usual toothy enthusiasm. Not that he bites or anything, Dirk wouldn't stand for that. He just presses his huge, yellowed horse teeth against your hand while his soft, mobile, spit-slimy horse lips and tongue search out the goodies and pull them into his mouth. Dirk finds this behaviour unspeakably charming, but--

"Well, slap my ass and call me Seabiscuit. I guess I oughtta mount up, huh. See where this takes me. I'll ask how you got Acorn's ball off me later."

He stops short of continuing the joke into a one-liner about riding off into the sunset, for fear that might actually be part of the plan.

But he really doesn't know what else to say. He knew there would be something, because Emet would hardly have gone to the trouble without a point to it, and Hythlodaeus....... but this is almost too perfect? Too thoughtful. He doesn't know how to react to it.

So he.... doesn't.

He rubs Acorn's neck with a hand, appreciating the warmth of his elegant, muscular body and crackling flames, and presses his nose against the Rapidash's long, stoic face before patting his steed's shoulder and getting ready to ride.

Hythlodaeus grins at Hades as his purr dries in his mouth. After he taps out a few treats to the other men, he casually pops a couple cubes into his mouth before offering some to Samson as an apology for his sizable weight. Not that this magical horse can't handle it.

"That is quite right! You will only see what we have in store once we are well out of sight of the city lights."

He steps up, shamelessly and visibly adjusts the contents of his hakama with his hand, and saddles up. He ordinarily rides his tropius with a leg on each side, but he is a gentler ride being as soft and fat as he is.
