Day at the races!

Who: Everyone!
Where: Moo Moo Farms
When: Saturday, March 20th
Summary:

The day is as lovely as you can expect any early spring day to be. You'll need a coat, yes, and there is a bit of a breeze, but the sun shines happily onto the wooden buildings that make up the Moo Moo Farms where we have all gathered today.

The various farm workers have worked hard to make their farm presentable to the public. Cheerful banners hang between the various sheds, stables and barns, which all have been given a bit of a cleaning (and perhaps a new coat of paint here and there). Of course, it is still a farm, so perhaps don't wear your very best shoes, but as far as farms go, it's been made as neat as can be.

And while the main draws of the day may be releasing the Miltank herd out onto the pasture again after a long winter inside -- whimsically called 'Cow Ballet' on the info sign -- and the Great Tauros Race, Moo Moo Farms has set up various little events and booths to entertain their guests, and perhaps teach them a thing or two about farm life.

A large information sign stands at the gate to the farm, letting visitors know what sort of events are taking place, as well as where and when these are happening. The two big ones -- the Miltank Ballet and the Tauros Race -- are spaced in such a way that people can easily attend both, and most of the other little events are available throughout the entire day.

The Miltank Ballet will be taking place at 1PM over by the big barn. There is little you can do to participate in this (unless you are a cow?), but if you want to watch some ecstatic Miltank dance through the mud and grass after a long winter inside, you should definitely come check this out.

The Tauros Race will start at 4PM (sign ups close at 3PM) and anyone who wants to help give the Tauros a good round of exercise is encouraged and welcome to sign up. There is, according to the sign, a small mystery prize to be won, but surely we are all here because we want to help some cooped up Tauros, right?

In addition to those two big events, two paddocks have been made ready where visitors can test themselves against a Bucking Bronco -- that's his name, Bronco the Bouffalant -- to see how long they can last in the saddle. Due to safety concerns, participants for this event will need to be 16+. For the children, there is a separate rodeo in which they can ride Vaquero the Dubwool, who, for all his seemingly wild behaviour, is actually a very well trained Dubwool who'll make sure no harm comes to the kids.

Of course, while people are free to bring their own food, the Moo Moo Farms have also set up a wide variety of booths where people can buy anything from fresh Moo Moo Milk and milkshakes to freshly made cheese and bread, and oh, is that apple pie? That most certainly is apple pie, as well as various other homey pastries. And as the day goes on, and people might start craving something a little less sweet and more filling, a booth opens up selling various curries. Don't worry, there won't be any Snorlax you need to share with this time!

And for anyone who has found themselves wanting and craving a bovine of their own after all these cute sights, you are in luck! Amidst the various booths, there is also one run by two cheery farm girls, advertising a sale on eggs! All the eggs that are normally available from the Moo Moo Farms can be bought at a whopping 50% discount. Mind that this is only on the purchase price of the egg itself. The price for any additional egg-moves remains the same.

There are also some other, smaller things set up, such a station where you can learn about milking a Miltank and a barrel where you can bob for apples, and even a horseshoe toss game. Most of these are definitely aimed towards teaching and entertaining little kids, but nobody will stop you if you decide to muscle past a row of Youngsters to claim the apple bobbing barrel.

Steven laughs. "Yeah, it's a bit out of left field, isn't it? But I've always enjoyed water sports and I learned to surf when I was in high school--my best friend after my parents moved north to Santa Carla was really into it, you know? So when I got to use an HM to teach it to my pokemon, I played around a bit with how you can use it in and out of battle. I'm glad I could use it this time too."

He lets his hand rest on top of Thace's for a moment, glancing at his boyfriend. "Shall we give him the present we commissioned now?" he asks under his breath.

"And you both knew you could count on me to take care of that poor Sawsbuck," Thace adds, amused and play-accusative. "It's a good thing I'll enjoy giving Steven his winnings from our bet."

His playful tone goes soft and fond when Steven asks the question. "Yes, I think now is a good time. I'm told that 18 is a coming of age for humans, and there are certain gifts that are given when a young Galra comes of age. We have endeavored to find something similar for you."

"Why would you enjoy losing?"

Weird. Grown ups are so weird sometimes. Or maybe that's just his uncles. Maybe he's better off not getting it?

"Uh. Yeah. I guess it is. I'm an adult now."

Which sounds strange to say although he's been more or less independent since the day he arrived here. He kind of feels like he's been an adult for a while by this world's standards. Even little kids seem to have a lot of freedom here.

But more importantly... gifts! His curiosity easily puts any other questions out of his mind. Even though Steven had been whispering he hadn't missed the word 'present', and he's kind of eager to see what they've got for him.

"What kind of gifts? Is it some sort of cool fighty thing?"

Galra are tough, so that would make sense for them. Probably. No matter what from the little he knows of their culture he's sure it will be something good.

Oh Steve.

"Well," Steven says, giving his boyfriend an amused look, before turning back to his younger namesake, "sometimes when two consenting adults make a bet together, they set the terms of the bet so both will enjoy the outcome no matter who wins. You'll understand later."

So yes, you're probably better off not getting it, Steve.

"And yes, actually," he adds, pulling out a long, square box from where it had been resting under the picnic table. "Sadly, we weren't able to get you the real thing, thanks to local laws, but we're hoping these will suffice."

Once Steve unwraps it, he'll find a pair of wooden practice blades inside, one sword-length, the other dagger--but not just any wooden practice blades. No, these are wea that were quite obviously made for Steve Palchuk and Steve Palchuk alone. To start of with, the guards of both of them have been carved to distinctly resemble Miltank ears and painted black to further enhance the resemblance, while the actual blades of the wooden weapons are painted the same shade as a Miltank's horn. The grip of the sword is painted the same shade of pink as a Miltank's coat, while the grip of the dagger is the same blue color of a shiny Miltank. And on the cream colored pommels of sword and dagger both--the same shade as the belly of either blade's corresponding cow--adorable little Miltank faces have been painted in miniature.

"We hope you like them," Steven says.

Thace laughs softly at Steve's question. "There's an ancient Galran proverb that says, 'look for a partner who makes yielding the same joy as being yielded to and thrive together you will.'"

While Steve is unwrapping the gift, Thace is almost buzzing with barely contained excitement, as if he's the one receiving a gift. He chimes in after Steven, "we asked a friend of ours with skill in wood carving, Dimitri, to make them for you, and my friend Claudia painted them."

"If you say so..."

Even Steve's getting the idea he's probably better off not knowing at this point. He's a little bit miffed that Steven's wording makes it sound like he's not old enough to know, but if his suspicions are right then he'd rather stay in the dark.

Besides. Presents are more important. He sets to work on thoroughly destroying the wrapping. Despite his previous guess, it's the pattern he notices before the shape of the items themselves. The Miltank markings are perfect, and honestly he would probably appreciate them even if they weren't on something as cool as the practice blades.

"Woah!" His eyes widen as he first picks up the wooden sword. Giving it a few experimental swings. Probably not a good idea in such close proximity to other people, but luckily he leans back enough he miraculously manages to avoid causing any damage. "These are awesome!"

Someone definitely needs to show him how to use them without risking someone's eyes or causing a concussion though.

If his suspicions are that it's a sex thing... then yes, yes it is, and he definitely would be happier staying in the dark.

"They are," Steven agrees, "and they come with lessons, if you'd like. Thace for swordplay and me for daggerwork. I'd teach you how to shoot too, but alas there's not really anything that would work as an adequate substitute for firearms here."
