Day at the races!

Who: Everyone!
Where: Moo Moo Farms
When: Saturday, March 20th
Summary:

The day is as lovely as you can expect any early spring day to be. You'll need a coat, yes, and there is a bit of a breeze, but the sun shines happily onto the wooden buildings that make up the Moo Moo Farms where we have all gathered today.

The various farm workers have worked hard to make their farm presentable to the public. Cheerful banners hang between the various sheds, stables and barns, which all have been given a bit of a cleaning (and perhaps a new coat of paint here and there). Of course, it is still a farm, so perhaps don't wear your very best shoes, but as far as farms go, it's been made as neat as can be.

And while the main draws of the day may be releasing the Miltank herd out onto the pasture again after a long winter inside -- whimsically called 'Cow Ballet' on the info sign -- and the Great Tauros Race, Moo Moo Farms has set up various little events and booths to entertain their guests, and perhaps teach them a thing or two about farm life.

A large information sign stands at the gate to the farm, letting visitors know what sort of events are taking place, as well as where and when these are happening. The two big ones -- the Miltank Ballet and the Tauros Race -- are spaced in such a way that people can easily attend both, and most of the other little events are available throughout the entire day.

The Miltank Ballet will be taking place at 1PM over by the big barn. There is little you can do to participate in this (unless you are a cow?), but if you want to watch some ecstatic Miltank dance through the mud and grass after a long winter inside, you should definitely come check this out.

The Tauros Race will start at 4PM (sign ups close at 3PM) and anyone who wants to help give the Tauros a good round of exercise is encouraged and welcome to sign up. There is, according to the sign, a small mystery prize to be won, but surely we are all here because we want to help some cooped up Tauros, right?

In addition to those two big events, two paddocks have been made ready where visitors can test themselves against a Bucking Bronco -- that's his name, Bronco the Bouffalant -- to see how long they can last in the saddle. Due to safety concerns, participants for this event will need to be 16+. For the children, there is a separate rodeo in which they can ride Vaquero the Dubwool, who, for all his seemingly wild behaviour, is actually a very well trained Dubwool who'll make sure no harm comes to the kids.

Of course, while people are free to bring their own food, the Moo Moo Farms have also set up a wide variety of booths where people can buy anything from fresh Moo Moo Milk and milkshakes to freshly made cheese and bread, and oh, is that apple pie? That most certainly is apple pie, as well as various other homey pastries. And as the day goes on, and people might start craving something a little less sweet and more filling, a booth opens up selling various curries. Don't worry, there won't be any Snorlax you need to share with this time!

And for anyone who has found themselves wanting and craving a bovine of their own after all these cute sights, you are in luck! Amidst the various booths, there is also one run by two cheery farm girls, advertising a sale on eggs! All the eggs that are normally available from the Moo Moo Farms can be bought at a whopping 50% discount. Mind that this is only on the purchase price of the egg itself. The price for any additional egg-moves remains the same.

There are also some other, smaller things set up, such a station where you can learn about milking a Miltank and a barrel where you can bob for apples, and even a horseshoe toss game. Most of these are definitely aimed towards teaching and entertaining little kids, but nobody will stop you if you decide to muscle past a row of Youngsters to claim the apple bobbing barrel.

"Oh, it's a huge help." Claude laughs. "Felix panicked when I did some jumping between Blitz and Arbiter at the archery range back during our Valentine's Day date, but I really don't know what he was so worried about. For one thing, it's not really that different of a stunt from the ones he's already seen me pull on a wyvern, and trusts me to be skilled enough to do...but even more than that, I have pokémon that understand human speech, and who I've been practicing with! Between the two of them and their intelligence, I'm probably safer with them than I ever was with one wyvern I had to train in a more indirect fashion..."

He raises his eyebrows slowly as Claude describes the... completely normal thing that Felix didn't need to panic about. "Oh, of course. Nothing more safe and reasonable than jumping between two flying Pokemon at an archery range, right?"

Grant is grinning fondly as he says it, though, and he's quick to add: "It's sort of incredible, hearing about the kind of stuff you get up to, and you always make it sound and look so effortless. And that just-- it just drives home how hard you've worked to get to where you can make this stuff look easy, you know?"

That... got a little wordier than he'd planned, what can he say. Sometimes he's just overwhelmed with affection and he has to let it out.

At least it's more manageable than being overwhelmed with thoughts about Claude's thighs.

That's such an unexpected and genuine compliment of Claude's skills, and not just his skills but the effort he's put into polishing them, that it actually gets the faintest hint of a darker color to Claude's cheeks. He does tend to no-sell things, especially things he's made an effort to get good at long before other people witness the results, but - hard work went into all those things, and it is nice for someone to acknowledge and appreciate that. Especially a boyfriend whose opinion means a lot to him. He smiles, averting his eyes slightly, the closest to self-conscious Grant has probably ever seen him get.

"It almost doesn't feel right taking credit for that, considering how Almyra places such stock by mounted skill - both with horses and wyverns. I could hardly have avoided learning or getting good at it if I'd wanted to. Riding horseback or wyvernback in Almyra is as much of a staple there as fighting is in Faerghus." A place where, as Grant may remember, children are taught how to handle weapons before they're even taught to read.

Seeing that change in Claude's expression, the hint of warmth in his cheeks, sends a small thrill up through Grant's chest. He's not sure he's ever seen a look like that on Claude's face, and... now he really wants to keep making that happen.

"Mm... I guess I get that. But even if you've got to be good at something to get by, I think there's still something to be said for putting the work in to get really good at it - plus, since none of that is standard knowledge where I'm from, I can't not be impressed."

He smiles brightly and adds, "Besides, I think that part of it is just how it reminds me of the work and thought you put into everything you do. Even if the results come out... weird, like the whole blue curry thing, that's still the product of you trying to do something interesting with it, you know? I... want you to be able to reap the rewards of that work for fun, without being under so much pressure to succeed. And it seems like this place may be good for that."

Claude laughs softly, still not quite looking at Grant. "Yeah...I like that, too. It reminds me of being back at the academy, you know? At least before things started getting more serious as the school year progressed. Where the stakes were low, and all the battles were just training, and everyone could go have a fun feast afterwards...where we could just mess around and have fun, and the weight of countries wasn't resting on our shoulders. Where you can just be good at things, or even bad at things, and it doesn't really matter. Where you can fail, or lose, and the world as you know it isn't going to end if you do."
woofdad: :c (what's wrong)

Concerned sympathy creeps into Grant's expression, even as he answers softly. "...Yeah."

And... then he lifts a hand, gently cupping the side of Claude's face. "Are you alright? I didn't mean to send you into thinking about... darker stuff."

Claude leans his cheek into Grant's hand, his smile growing warmer as his eyes flick up to meet Grant's. No more avoidance, for the moment. "Yeah, I'm fine. I didn't mean to drag the mood down like that, but...well, for a second I remembered just how much of a luxury this kind of thing is. Especially so for me, maybe, where everything I do and how well I do it is scrutinized by people who don't think I'm fit to be king, or even Almyran, and are just waiting for me to prove it by not being good enough."

He shakes his head. "But I shouldn't get bogged down with thoughts like that. This isn't Almyra, and I can be good or bad at things without consequence here. I should be enjoying that, not dwelling on what things are like back home."
