[The broadcast is quiet, and if the Pokègear's angle is any indication perhaps not entirely intentional.]

[Penny, too, is quiet. Head resting in her folded arms on the table in front of her, holding a double-A battery in place with one finger as a small Joltik gums at the end, raising tiny sparks as it eats the electrical energy within.]

[It's not until a few minutes later that the sparks fizzle to a stop; the Joltik chews at the now-dead battery a few more times before taking a step back and chittering up at Penny.]

All done, Jolty?

[Penny slides the battery aside, holding her hand out palm up for the tiny Pokémon. Jolty takes the unspoken invitation and scuttles up Penny's arm and around to the back of her head, cocooning herself in Penny's hair like someone finding blankets for the first time after a week of chilly weather.]

[Penny sighs, reaching for the Pokègear as Jolty settles into her makeshift nest.]

Sorry it's not what you're- oh!

[Penny takes a second to compose herself as she realizes the Gear has been broadcasting.]

I’m sorry, I didn't know it was- um- what I was going to-

[She takes a shaking breath before continuing.]

….Yang Xiao Long went home today. If anyone-

[Her voice catches, for just a second; she swallows hard.]

If anyone received any of her Pokémon, please, just- let me know, if you could. Thank you.

[Penny reaches for the Pokègear, shutting it off maybe just a little too quickly.]

[Yang Xiao Long. That was a name Rakka was familiar with. They talked during the moon prom, and several times after that. And if that wasn't enough for Rakka to answer the Pokegear, the sight of Penny looking so... dejected sure did motivate her.

She's fine, everything about the way Penny's voice catches is fine.]

...Penny?

[O-oh...oh no...Penny is sad again? Why is it that every time Jane happens to see Penny, the poor girl is sad?]

I...didn't receive any Pokemon. [Best to answer her question.] Do you...need to talk, Penny?

[While Mabel can't claim that she knew who Yang Xiao Long was, she definitely knew Penny. There was no way she could ever forget someone who up and rescued her! While there probably wasn't a lot she could do, she just knew she had to do something to cheer her friend up!]

...But will you be okay, Penny? If you want somebody to talk to, you know I'm here right?

[Okay, good, someone else who hasn't left yet. Though the fact that that feels like it's becoming such a standard of measure is a little depressing in itself.]

...How've you been?

[Because how even do you begin to just launch into the giant mess this all is? When the people you've seen every day for months are just suddenly not there anymore, and even if following them were possible there's nothing for you to go back to, and the quiet, gnawing worry that you'll be next.]

[Because it just keeps happening, Jane.]

Hi Jane. ...Yeah, I think that might. Well. Not help.

[The hurt never exactly stops, she's learned.]

[For so many reasons beyond just losing a friend, which Mabel definitely does not deserve to have dumped on her.]

[It really does. Even if hearing it from a former-current friend who doesn't remember his first stint in Johto lends its own weird existential worry to this kind of thing. That, at least, is a discomfort she can push aside for the moment.]
