Akane Tendo | Ranma ½ | OTA

Anywhere and Everywhere

Perched on top of her suddenly massive Tepig as he ambles down one route or another, Akane Tendo wonders numbly if this is what it's like to be Akari Unryu. "But you'd tell me if you planned to take up sumo wrestling, wouldn't you, T-chan?" she says.

T-chan nods his head and 'bwee's agreeably. He's not entirely sure how he got so big when he's been doing his best to stay small and cuddly for Akane (helped by the everstone she'd got him) but she didn't seem too mad at least. Not mad enough to hit or punch anything, anyway. Even Q-no.

A few more steps and suddenly the landscape surrounding Akane and T-chan is completely different than it was before. Again. She slumps forward with a loud groan. No. This isn't what it's like to be Akari. This is what it's like to be Ryoga.

"Where the heck am I now?!?"

"You're... not in Pewter, but that's all I can say for certain."

For a man who claims to be certain, Ash sure sounds confused. His eyes are unfocused, and he keeps patting the teacup-sized Pokémon snoozing on his shoulder-

-wait, is that a Snorlax?

"I didn't know Tepig could get that big."

"I didn't know that a Snorlax could get that tiny," Akane retorts, tartly. Then she sighs and shakes her head. "There's something extra-weird happening this time, I guess," she says. "I mean. There's always something extra when the weekend gets weird..."

But this was definitely different.

"Even by those weekends' standards, this is a bit too much. Too widespread, also."

Sleepily, the Snorlax snorts and stretches. Automatically, Ash's hand moves to keep him steady.

"Think their appetite will match their new size? It'd do wonders for my grocery bill, but yours..."

"Pigs can eat pretty much everything," Akane says. "I had a pet one back home, sort of. He was an outside pig and he'd be gone for long periods of time, but P-chan always came home to me eventually. So I dunno, maybe T-chan will be able to graze?"

The mental image of a giant Tepig grazing among a herd of horses and cows is one Ash will cherish forever.

"Might be better off staying away from the cities until this ends, then. Unless you want to find out if pigs can safely eat asphalt and cement too."

Akane winces. "Oof. Yeah. I mean, even really big cities like Goldenrod and Saffron still have public parks... but still. I wonder how Akari manages to keep all of hers fed.

"Akari's this girl I know back home," she adds after a moment. "Raises giant sumo pigs. She's sort of dating my friend Ryouga?"

Ranma’s last trip here was already weird enough, in terms of emotional complication and psychological examination. Two things Ranma’s not particularly good at. In fact, she’s historically been bad at it.

But upon arriving back in this world, Ranma can’t help but feel... different this time around. She doesn’t know if it’s better yet or not. But it’s something.

Still, she’s Ranma. However she feels, she’s still gonna be an ass. And that’s particularly clear in how she’s squinting up at Akane’s perch on T-chan.

“Ya know, for someone who hates pigheaded guys as much as you do, you sure do find the biggest pigs around.”

"He's not supposed to be this big, dummy," Akane says, clearly annoyed. Then, to T-chan, "Stay."

The oversized Tepig sits down. Akane slides down from his back and turns to face Ranma. "Hi," she says, awkwardly. "It's, um, been a while. Almost a year for me."

And she does look just the tiniest bit older. Enough that Ranma might not have noticed it if Akane hadn't said anything, but since she did...

“Not s’posed to- what have you been feeding him then?”

It’s a weird feeling. A profoundly weird feeling. Which is a common occurrence here honestly.

“No fooling? Dang. It’s only been...” She pauses, trying to actually parse the distinction between time and events from here and home.

She settled on a noncommittal shrug. “Well, it suits ya well.”

Is that... a compliment that makes sense? She’s not sure.

"... thanks?" Akane says, slightly confused because that was an actual compliment and not the back-handed kind she's used to getting from Ranma. "And I haven't been feeding him anything different than usual. It's this weird weekend stuff! Twice a year everything gets really strange for three days and everyone wanders around like Ryoga because places won't stay where they're supposed to and people with magic get it back. And some other weird thing happens. Last time you were here, it was those foxes stealing things and the time between then and now I had a floating silver hammer for a couple days and now..."

She sighs. "Now T-chan could fight one of Akari's pigs without even using his fire."

She shrugs, looking to brush over her compliment quickly.

“Brute strength’ll get ya far. But short things can surprise you. Who even knows what Akari could cook up if put against her own type of animal.”
