[It's Raphtalia! She hasn't been up to much since her last post, but she seems a lot calmer now than she was initially.]

Um... how do you make friends with Pokemon? I know you're supposed to catch them, but I don't like the idea of trying to hurt them. Is there a way to catch them without hurting them? And then you can be friends with them?

I don't want to fight any Pokemon! I just want to make friends with them! Can you tell me how I can make friends?

[ It takes a while for Nyaff to respond. How did he make friends with Byleth? That's got to be close, right? Surely he can't just reference how he's made friends with his teammates. There's no human factor there! ]

There are quite a lot of ways in fact! Though I shall of course preface with a warning that a good number of pokemon quite enjoy what we would consider a 'rough tussle'- in fact it can be quite necessary for their development. So worry not for if such a method could make it difficult to befriend them- I quite guarantee it won't!

All that aside- there are of course eggs, which you can purchase or discover to hatch on your own, as well as pokemon which are sold at certain farms and locations. For a more true to 'capture' method however, there are pokeballs known as 'quick balls'! Their effectiveness is based entirely upon how quickly you throw them!

But lastly, [Jonathan says with a large, friendly smile,] there is the Safari Zone! Where the entire purpose of the location is to simply attempt to capture pokemon without beginning a battle!

...And as well, I shall admit that occasionally a pokemon will quite literally seek you out for themselves, [he laughs.] I've had my own fair share of those who simply seek out an empty ball within my backpack to claim!

Quick balls, eggs... we have monster eggs in my world too. They hatch into Filolial. But it seems these eggs can hatch into a lot more.

Oh, the Safari Zone sounds fun! You really don't have to battle?

Filolial..? [Clearly it would be some sort of creature but-]

Ah, yes! Though it's unfortunately quite some distance from where you likely are...and as a further drawback, I imagine it quite intimidating to face the various beasts there without the aid of your fellow pokemon!

A Filolial is a bird monster! A lot of people use them for riding.

Oh, I'm not sure if Mister Steven and Mister Thace will let me go to a place like that. At least not by myself...

[Not that she wants to go anywhere without them.]

A bird for riding...there are certainly things like that, among the pokemon here.

Steven and Thace! Those are wonderful people to be travelling with, so I'm happy to hear you've made their acquaintance. Truthfully the Safari Zone is better experienced as a group, so that could be for the best; it can be treated as something of a vacation expedition!

Food helps! Pokémon love all kinds of food like poffins and berries. In fact, one of my ratattas has gotten very good at making his own poffins now, and he brings them along when we travel just to help with any potential catches we might want to try.

Um, okay! I'll make some food that make Pokemon be friends with me!

That would be nice of you to do for them, but even just some of the berries you can find in trees are good if you're nervous about cooking.

I've never cooked before. I've only watched mama and papa cook before, and...

[She looks sad for a moment, but it quickly disappears.]

I don't know much, but I've cooked a few things successfully. I can teach you what I know if you'd like.

It depends on the Pokemon! But yeah, you can just make friends without battling! You can use berries or other snacks, or just hang out-- but be careful, and bring some protection with you! Some Pokemon are always itching for a fight, no matter how you approach them.

I don't like fighting other Pokemon, I tried training my Honedge a bit but it's hard to make them fight.

You mean hard, like you don't like watching it happen?

I don't like watching it happen. I don't... want to force my Pokemon to fight if they don't want to.

[Like she was forced to fight against her will.]

Hmm... Well, you can always run. Most Pokemon won't chase you that far out of their territory. There are also moves that do things like paralyze the Pokemon, or put it to sleep, or something like that. That's less like fighting, right?

I guess I could try that. Making them go to sleep instead of fighting...

Yeah! There's usually a way around a real battle, if you don't want to, or if you're outmatched. So I wouldn't worry too much.

I mean, if you're around long enough, sometimes Pokemon you run into will just decide to join you. Whether you like it or not.

Really? I would like it if they decided to be friends with me!

Then I guess all you've gotta do is be patient, and also not super picky I guess? But if you go out there and be friendly, you'll find some eventually. Hell, around half of the ones who live with me showed up like that...

That's great to hear. I'm not gonna be really picky, I'm not even sure what Pokemon are out there...

It seems you have already been given a good deal of advice for how to deal with gaining new companions... But for the ones you are already in the company of, have you ever asked them about their feelings on battle...?

No, I haven't... I only have the one I started with, and they're a flying sword. I'm not really sure how to communicate with them...?

Oh, are you referring to Honedge? That may actually work out quite well... If you make the effort, you could encourage them to use their ribbons to pick up a pencil, and write with you.

[....But that my be asking for a lot here.]

Alternatively... If you stick to simple yes-or-no questions, you could have your companion gesture as an answer.

[Compeltely deadpan. Even as her Shinx kept brushing against her.]

Yeah, that's how I got this one. [A nod and she attempted to hold the shinx up to the camera. Attempted because that made him wiggle more to try and nuzzle her.]

There are plenty of ways! Aside from battling, I mean.

It depends a little, because some Pokemon aren't as nice at first... but they really like berries and poffins! After that, just treat them kindly!

I'll try giving them berries and that way they'll be friends with me!

Exactly! I'm sure that'll work!

Just be careful around the bigger Pokemon, though, okay? The small Pokemon can be nice, but the bigger ones can be a little mean when you first meet them.

[ The big sister figure in Yuzu just... briefly flashed to a hypothetical scenario involving an angry Ursaring or something. Make all of the friends but please stay safe, small child... ]
