So, I was wondering - what's something from your world that's been really weird to find out isn't universal? For example, I'm a werewolf and I've been kind of surprised by how many worlds we apparently don't exist in. It's a weird feeling.

Related, is cats having extra eyes a thing where you're from or not, asking for both me and my boyfriend.

Seems that way! Sometimes, I think how wide the range of "normal" really gets is one of my favorite things about meeting people here.

Wow, that's... a sequence. So, your world doesn't have its own magic, but it's possible for people there to use that from another plane?

Pretty much, yes. My friends and I use it the most often, but sometimes some of the magic can overwhelm a person and cause them to get a bit...well, not like themselves. So my friends and I try to help out when that happens.

What is it like where you're from?

Well, the key point is the planar system; the part of my... universe of origin, I guess you could say, that I'm from is one of four known planes of existence, each defined by a different type, or "color", of magic; my Earth has its own magic, but the others each have their own, and one plane's magic can be accessed on another, if one arranges the right ritual for it.

It can be a bit scary sometimes, especially when the magic accidentally turns the person into a monster when it overwhelms them. But we certainly can't just leave people like that.

Oh wow! That really is different than what I'm used to. What do you mean by a different "color" of magic? Does that mean that the magic in each plane give off a certain energy color?

That does sound like it could be scary. How do you and your friends help people in that state?

Honestly, we don't know exactly where the names come from anymore; the exact details have been lost to history. But they're most likely the product of a mix of associations, passed down over time, based on where each type of magic's power lies.

For example, Earth's magic, which impacts the physical world, is associated with things like flesh and blood, earth and clay, and so forth; it's probably because of those associations that it's come to be known as red magic.

We have to try to separate the connection that the magic has with the person. Sometimes we can do that by talking with them, but sometimes we have to use what my friend Rainbow Dash would call "rainbow lasers". It doesn't really hurt them.

Oh I see. So what do you mean by red magic impacting the physical world? Can you use it to change things around the environment, or...?

Ooh, I see! So, does that magic work by conceptual connections, too? Also... may I ask what "rainbow lasers" are, because they do sound pretty great.

Along those lines, yeah! I could be more specific by saying it manipulates matter, but, admittedly, getting into "specifics" with magic can be tough; a lot of it is built off concepts and associations, which can get... fuzzy, when you're differentiating between matter vs. "objects" vs. the "body". But you do have the idea!

Well, um...I guess it depends on what you mean by conceptual connections? And the rainbow lasers are pretty much as they sound. When me and my friends combine our powers, we can shoot a colorful beam of light that can break the magical effects on a person.

Oh, okay! That does sound like it could get really complicated, but it's really interesting too!

Hm, this might be hard to explain since you didn't grow up with our same magic, but-- so, the thing is, a core element of ritual magic back home is the associations and expectations of the caster. The mention of talking to people to break the magic's connection to them reminded me of how the degree to which somebody can use - or is affected by - particular ritual elements can be changed with changes in their own mental state. If that makes sense, if it doesn't that's totally understandable.

Haha, right on both of those!There's a lot to take in, but I found studying it to be really rewarding back home.

I think so. It might work in a similar way where I'm from. The magic that affects people back home seems to manifest in different ways, depending on how someone is thinking or feeling at the time. Certain traits can be amplified and made worse, and depending on how strong the connection is, talking to them isn't always effective, so we have to use our magic in order to sever the connection.

That at least sounds similar on a surface level, yeah - maybe even more driven by cognition than ours, depending? Man, that's interesting.

Christ, I wish I could compare this stuff more directly, but this place doesn't really allow for that. Endlessly disappointing.
