Voice, backdated to the 18th or so

"Um, could somebody tell me what you're supposed to do for Christmas?"

That's it, that's the entire post. And, per usual, the shy kid isn't planning on showing his face if he can help it...

I think that kinda depends. I don't know what they specifically do in this place, but, back home for me, there's usually like gift-giving and parties and stuff. And some people go to church around midnight on the night before. Oh, and the decorating... with a lot of lights and glitter and pine trees.

[So, that's a rough overview, but Keith didn't get heavily into a lot of Christmas stuff after he turned ten because his dad died that year. His memories might be a little hazy from when he was younger than that.]

"Decorating is for houses and towns though, right?"

As in, it's not something travelers are necessarily expected to help out with. That's usually the case for festivals as far as Shrike's aware, but this is a different world, who knows what odd traditions it might have.

Kind of? I mean, people don't decorate themselves. Mostly. I mean, they'll wear funny hats, or ugly sweaters. I guess that would count as decoration.

I don't know how this particular world handles it. I'm just going on what I remember from home.

"Oh."

Shrike is honestly unsure whether that really clarifies things much, but at least it's something.

"It seems like it's an important festival here..."

Important, popular, same thing.

Maybe. I mean, I don't know if the meaning behind it is necessarily the same as what I grew up with back home. But, people are certainly into the idea of celebrating it.

Do you... not have something like this at home?

"There's winter festivals but it seems like it's more important here?"

He's thinking of solstice celebrations.

"I think usually people just have a feast and stuff..."

Maybe also a fire kept going throughout the longest night, that sort of thing.

I don't know. I mean, it's kind of similar to what we have back home for me, but, at the same time, not quite, you know?

Though, when there's a Pokémon that specifically runs around and hands out gifts, I guess it would be kind of important here.

"It seems like everything here has to do with the Pokemon..."

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, of course. It's just taking some getting used to.

Yeah... well, I mean... they are a big part of their world. It kind of makes sense, I guess. [There was a rustle of fabric as Keith shrugged a little.] We don't have animals in this sense back home. You know... Pokémon. Ours don't have special powers and all that.

"Oh, there's nothing like that where I'm from, either."

Shrike feels he ought to clarify.

"Animals are just... animals. I mean, I guess there's magical beasts too, but..."

"Yeah... same here. Though, I don't think we have anything magical?" Keith shrugged. "I mean, some have different abilities, and we've seen that across the universe as we've traveled, but yeah. They're still mostly just animals."

Hold on there, that first bit actually catches Shrike's interest.

"No magical beasts, or nothing magical at all?"

The idea of magic not working in this world is weird enough, but at least the Pokémon are sort of like something magical. But to have neither...

"Not on my homeworld, no. But, other worlds have different abilities and things that might seem magical to some people. I don't think they're necessarily actually magic, though."

There's a brief pause while Shrike thinks about that.

"What do people do without magic? I mean, uh, you don't need it for basic stuff, but for big things usually people have spells and enchantments for that..."

Suffice it to say the presence of magical things is pretty ubiquitous in his world, even if plenty of people hardly know how to cast a spell themselves. He just figured Pokémon in this world filled a similar role, being a sort of magical beast, but imagining a world with none of that is... odd.

"Oh... well... I mean, I guess it would be technology we use in place of magic," he said. "I mean, like this device, for example. The one we're using to communicate. We have stuff like this back home. We also have computers and airplanes and vehicles we use to fly in outerspace. None of them are really magic, but are technology and science."

"So it's all..." What was that word again? "... machines? You don't even have anything like Pokémon?"

It's a little hard for him to imagine; this world with its lack of magic is strange enough!

"Oh, I mean... like I said, there might be on other planets, but nothing like it on Earth... no." He shook his head, even if this was just voice. "I mean, you learn to make do with what you have, you know? We didn't have magic, or special animals, so humans made machines to do those tasks or make things easier for them."
