Video - Action for Goldenrod

[It was late, probably too late for a preteen to be walking around the city. But this was Gabi, wandering around in the middle of the night was just what she did. Some might have noticed the little guy poking his head out from behind a bin as he followed. Gabi didn't, she grinned widely at the camera before spinning it around to focus on Ruffles, her Rockruff.

Who looked very grumpy for a Rockruff. Just frowning as he sat there, wrinkling his snout.]

Soo- Does anyone know why a pokemon might get really, really mad? He normally likes to play and run but now he just gro- HEY!

[The Pokegear was jerked and suddenly, everyone was getting the lovely view of the inside of a pokemon's mouth. Then the Nickit started running.]

GET BACK HERE ASSHOLE!

[Child... Alas, her two legs couldn't keep up. But Ruffles' could and he was growling as he pursued. Then glowing... Then he was a whole lot less cute. Enough that the Nickit decided the pokegear wasn't worth it, he dropped it and fled.]

Whoa that was so COOL! [She was so excited. Look at her boy. All of them were growing up to be so strong. Except he started growling when she neared to get her gear back. Gabi stilled, her face shifting into a frown.]

[Radley heard all the commotion and came hurrying over with some of his Pokemon. He ground to a halt at the angry growling. Oh boy....]

Are you okay?

[Evie hurried to try to talk to Ruffles, but Radley stopped her from getting too close. She would have to chat from a safe distance.]

[She didn't look, she was more bothered about her pokemon. Why was the boy acting like this all of a sudden?]

Huh? ...Yeah. There was a weird fox and now he's acting weird.

[Very descriptive. As he just growled more.]

Well, he just evolved.... Maybe his personality's changed?

["Eevee-vee?" Evie asked Ruffles.]

[MORE GROWLING! Showing all his teeth, he has so many now. And sharp claws too! Though it was kinda ruined by him trying to balance on one leg to scratch his ears... That made him topple quickly, his head snapping to growl at the floor.]

...That changes their personality?

[Her boy still seemed kinda dumb from here.]

It can. It's one reason I'm kinda leery of evolution myself.

[He grabs Evie so she won't run over and maybe get hurt.

"Eevee!" Evie says to Ruffles from Radley's arms.]

[If it counted for anything, the Lycanroc didn't near. He just crouched in his little spot. IT HIS! ]

But... Why? Isn't it just getting bigger?

[No one had told her this. She'd been here for months and it'd not happened with any of her other pokemon.]

Unfortunately, no. They change physically and sometimes don't look the same at all. They get more powerful, although I've heard that they don't learn new attacks as quickly. And then some of them don't act the same ever again.

[He pets Evie while he talks.]

He's been acting like this for awhile...

[Grouchy. He'd been friendly when she'd first caught him. If it counted as catching when the puppy had followed her from the cave to the city. ]

Huh.... So probably not the evolution then. Maybe that just made it worse. When did it start?

A few weeks ago, only at night.

... Huh. That's weird. Could there be something at night that's bugging him, a sound or something? Maybe a night Pokemon?

[ dancer had decided it was best to let falco rest at such an hour. he had quite a few christmas projects to overlook as is, so when he stirred once gabi hadn't returned— hypnosis and leaving him in poppie's care was enough.

gabi needed a guardian this late at night, and she's quite glad that she followed for the girl's aura. she comes face to face with them in the middle of goldenrod. ruffles . . . is no longer small. when she calls out to them, her voice sounds like a sung question. gabi? ruffles? ]

[Gabi's schedule consisted of two things, training and finding good food. Staying still was hard when there was so much city to explore.

Ruffles, like his namesake would suggest, gave a low ruff. The growling subsided as he snorted and started scratching at the floor. Look how stronk his claws were now. Gabi was still just baffled. She was actually thinking instead of just going up to the werewolf boyo.]

[ that's what she thought, woof-boy. now, ruffles was quite high in levels compared to dancer, but she had brains, and protectiveness. with a sway of what looks like her long white fabrics, she glides over to the girl.

is everything okay? that question goes to both of them. ]

[He was normally a good boy, not a smart boy. Full of energy, it'd only been the past week he'd started getting grumpy and restless. Trying to chew things. It was why Gabi had been walking about, maybe she'd been looking for fights. To let him chomp on other pokemon and train up for this 'tough' gym badge.

Ruffles' lips curled back into a fanged grin as neared. His head cocking, the floppy ear might have been cute if he didn't have glowing red eyes.]

I'm fine... [Gabi didn't sound so sure about that. She still wasn't sure what was going on. He'd evolved but...

teeth hurt, bite? He was sneaking closer, lowering his snout and following those draping tails.]

[ absolutely not, gardevoir retorts to the lycanroc. bite her, no! but she does look around for something chewable . . . ah. with her mind, she lifts the plastic cover of a back alley garbage dump and floats it over to him. but you may bit this.

gabi was still unsure. the gardevoir takes her as priority now, and asks: what troubles you? ]

[Gabi was tensing at the telepathy. This is weird, she didn't like??? It only made her more unsure, because now Ruffles was being weird and now... Dancer was reading her brain thoughts. Which were mostly just dial up noises and confusion.

Meanwhile the moment the lid started floating about Ruffles was lunging. HE GET IT, HE GOT IT, just mauling this thing. Biting it, clawing it, shaking it around. He hunt good yes?]

[ yes . . . you're a good hunter she sighs. in her brain. but gabi was still way too strained. was it . . . her size? dancer was one of those extra large gardevoirs—

thinking it may be height, she kneels down and tries to coax her with a friendly hum. hm. it's still not working. "this is weird and unliked". oh.

would you rather i not speak this way?

she asks this genuinely! ]

[The lid was very dead, a feat given it wasn't alive to begin with. Teeth had punctured it where he gnawed on it.

Gabi swallowed. Opening her mouth and holding it for a moment. Trying very hard not to think]

Can you hear everything? [All the random thoughts. Like what she'd had for dinner that day.]

[ only when i wish to, she says with a gentle hum.

which, thankfully, wasn’t all the time! the next words aren’t exactly words— she stops her telepathy and out comes the dreamy chime of her cry. see! normal pokémon! ]

[ Perhaps it really is a bit late, but Yuzu is glad to be out tonight when she heard the nearby commotion. So she starts running, and turns the corner just in time to see Gabi—a young girl that Yuzu is actually able to recognize somewhat—facing a growling Lycanroc... albeit a different form than her own.

She'd read up on Lycanrocs after her own Rockruff evolved into a strange, orange-furred form that Yuzu didn't recognize... but unlike that, she could pretty quickly tell what kind of Lycanroc is currently growling at Gabi. Hoo boy. ]

W-Whoa! What's going on here...!?

[ Sensing the hostility coming from the other wolf, even if it wasn't aimed specifically at Yuzu, prompts one of Yuzu's own Pokeballs to suddenly open on it's own, resulting in Yuzu's own rock wolf to appear and stand defensively in front of Yuzu. ]

[Gabi was still, rooted to the spot. She'd very rarely she'd seen attack dogs. But most places didn't bother, weapon advancements made attack animals redundant. She'd never stood in front of one that was actually aggressive. He might have only reached her shoulder, but those claws looked sharp and she knew he was quick.]

Uh... He was chasing a fox and evolved. Now he's mad?

[Unsure, she didn't turn to look at who was speaking. Just keeping her eyes on the pokemon that was hunched over and drooling onto the pavement. ]

[ In the world of Pokemon, could most dogs be considered attack dogs...? Questions for later. ]

Oh boy... uh... say hello to your new Midnight Lycanroc...?

[ Yuzu's Lycanroc—Fang is his name—eyed the newly-evolved Lycanroc, green eyes watching blood-red eyes intently, but remaining green as they wait to see what the first move will be in this situation. ]

They're... pretty tempermental... more than other Lycanroc, so...

[ "Be careful", which at this point, doesn't really need to be said. Still, Yuzu's not the one right in front of them, so she only hopes that she and Fang don't have to step in. ]

Midnight..? [She had no idea what that was supposed to mean. Well, she knew what midnight meant but not when it was in the same sentence as a pokemon.

For now, the midnight lycanroc was just...guarding his spot. Snorting and growling from his little part of the path.]

Uh...What's that mean?

[She did not comprehend. Why was the baby suddenly full of rage?]

Well... when a Rockruff evolves, the form they take depends on whether it's daytime or nighttime... and when they evolve at night, they end up like that.

[ It's the moon's fault, Gabi. The moon has filled your baby with so much rage. Also, don't mind the third, inbetween form that's currently behind you. ]

Evolution is like that. Sometimes evolution is just growing into a bigger, stronger form... but other times the changes are a bit more... drastic. Midnight Lycanroc have short tempers and only listen to trainers that can earn their respect.

[Her boy was confused and angry. The floor was currently taking the brunt of his anger as he tried to dig up the pavement with his much stronger claws.

Gabi still didn't raise her voice too much though. Just to be safe.]

...So that means he doesn't respect me?

[She couldn't help the little scowl on her face.]

[ The city may appreciate the pavement not being completely wrecked, but the pavement is a better target for it's frustration than... well, anything else at the moment. Still, Yuzu's Lycanroc lets out a low growl, evidently not taking the show of strength very calmly.

In any case, Yuzu frowns. It's probably not the greatest news that Gabi wants to hear, but it's better to be honest than to try and sugarcoat it. ]

Probably not, no. A Pokemon's personality can change when they evolve, so even if they listened to you before, you might have to earn his respect now.

[ The experience was far from unfamiliar in Yuzu's case. Sure, Dusk Lycanroc are both calm and ferocious, so that evolution had it's own set of problems. ]
