video;

[ Minfilia had a stern look on her face. (And looked a little tired.) ] Hopefully that's the last of that.

[ She comments, not elaborating. But then, she puts on her usual placid smile. ] May I ask something which may seem strange to many of those here? And that is - are the weeks and days and months the same as where you come from? In my case, they are not - our weeks are eight days, our months thirty-two days. I, of course, expect the years are different - but it has still been a struggle to adapt to seven-day weeks.

...That reminds me, however. Though conversion, I have learned it is my nameday-- birthday within the next week. The 23rd, I believe, is the closest to the date I would celebrate back home.

I have no plans for that day. No - a day off is something to celebrate... especially without seeing a Murkrow or Nicket again. [ Huh. She sounds. Tired. Saying those two Pokemons' names. ]

[[ Also open to action on the 23rd - you can catch her around Goldenrod! I'm still technically on hiatus because of this being a tough month for me, but wanted to get this out and do stuff with it :3c ]]

"The months here are weird!"

Shrike, that's not the most helpful place to start...

"They don't go with the moon at all."

Maybe someday Shrike will reach the point of using video, but just being relatively comfortable talking to strangers is already progress for him.

"I don't know how people know what day it is... Is that why there's lots of calendars here?"

Ah, but are you calculating your birthday based on the date itself, or on the number of days that have gone by since you last celebrated it?

[Let's make things more complicated, why not.]

A Murkrow and a Nickit? Did some of your Pokémon cause trouble until they evolved and settled down?
paladinlost: (sighing)

A wise decision, though I imagine that those who were taken just before their birthday and brought here immediately after the date may feel differently. Then again, we could claim any date or age, and who here could prove otherwise?

I'll not argue that, considering... everything, really. You had unplanned repeat visitors, then?
fayblood: (hooded surprise)

[personal profile] fayblood 2023-02-17 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah! I always have to look to see what day it is."

Part of that might also be due to how different the system is rather than its complexity, but even so.

[Lupa has to think about this for a minute.]

The concept of a calendar made up of weeks and months was not unknown to us in the Junkyard, but we didn't mark time by it. There were no seasons, and almost no practical difference between night and day.

[Lupa shrugs.] We were also not born, nor did we have the concept of celebration or days off. Nameday makes more sense than birthday to me.

[And then a little smile.] What is normally done to celebrate a nameday in your home?

[Nameday...? Oh - oh! Oh!]

Your birthday is next week? Oh my goodness! Say, out of - erm, totally unrelated curiosity, but - what kind of cake do you happen to like?

[Jane come on, you're usually better at being more sly about asking such questions!]

Huh... If your weeks are eight days long, how long are your weekends?

[If the look on his face is any indication, he's genuinely intrigued.]

Nope, not even close! I was orbiting a planet that's got 89 hour days. It's stupid how short days are here.
almosthandsome: (between you and me)

Not fun, do not recommend.

That depends on who ya ask! Corporate culture doesn't exactly encourage sleeping. Stimulants are big.

Your badges?

[That's a problem. That's a very big problem.]

I understand certain species are fascinated by shiny objects, but still... Were you able to recover them safely, or were you forced to contact the various Gym leaders to replace them? Can they even be replaced at all?
cyan_maid: (Pesterquest - mind if i take this?)

Birch syrup...hm...

[It isn't a thing Jane's worked with before, but she isn't dissuaded from trying.]

...And then out of curiosity, what does a snurbleberry look like? I'm afraid that's not something we have where I'm from - nor do I think they exist here.

[When Jane realizes it's just a really big and lovely strawberry-decorated cake she's going to have so much fun.]

Both the Junkyard and ourselves were created. We learned later that almost all of us had the data... souls of people who had died in the world outside, but originally we were all formed as adults with no knowledge of anything but war.

And no names. [A small smile.] So choosing our names could be considered an important thing. Spending that day with others you care about sounds very pleasant.

"Um, usually? But it's weird having to just count all the days and remember what number you're on without being able to just check from the moon..."

He's from a place that uses a pretty old-fashioned system that doesn't require as much calendar tracking, apparently.

...do I want to ask regarding that last part?

[They've participated in dumber FATEs than bullying wild animals before, okay, there is no dignity to lose.]
