Adventures in Goldenrod
Who: Angel & Krieg (+ OTA for "The Adventure")
Where: Goldenrod
When: 11/1
Summary: Angel Explores Goldenrod. Elsewhere, she bumps into a dear friend.
Rating: PG-13 for Kriegisms.
Log:
[It was hard to believe this was her first time out on her own. She'd lost count of the months that had passed since her arrival in Johto. Those were the sort of things better left in the back of her mind. She had told herself repeatedly that what had befallen her on Pandora was another life.]
[She was finally heeding her own advice.]
[Wandering Goldenrod was exhilarating, to say the least. There always seemed to be something happening. Between the whoosh of the occasional train, the clamor and bustle around the department store, or the battles at the Gym, Angel had never once been bored.]
[Certainly, there were still troubles lurking in the corners of her mind. She was all too aware of the devastation caused in the city. But she had spent the better part of the night working to make it right. She had deserved a break.]
[Even now, as the sun began to set and the energy of her Pokemon began to fade, Angel did what she could to soldier on. She had missed so much, been so afraid. It felt like years since she had been this happy.]
[In truth, it probably had been years, but she wasn't thinking about that. In this moment, nothing could take the light from her eyes, or the smile from her lips. After tasting life for so long, she finally felt alive.]
------
[As the fervor died down in the tower, and as the remaining grunts were chased out from the city, an odd discomfort began to overtake Angel. She did what she could to keep her mind on her work, collecting scared Pokemon that had found themselves cowering in dark corners, but still the thought persisted.]
[It was only after an hour or two of the odd sensation that she realized the trouble. In the chaos, she had broken off from her friends, and in her distraction, she hadn't once thought of seeking them out.]
[Depositing a wayward Pidove at the Center, Angel quietly excused herself from her duties. Taking to the streets in the pre-dawn light, Angel began her search. The frantic run-around of the night prior had done little to make her familiar with the town, and the going was relatively slow. She was grateful that the tower, the hub of the town and apparent epicenter of the night's disaster, was so obvious. Certainly, there was some trouble with dead-ends, but... she made do.]
[Once she reached the tower, she did what she could to navigate the throngs of the curious and the scared. When she found a relatively reasonable face, she would ask after her friends, get a few quizzical glances (usually when she described Krieg), and then continue onward, help or no help.]
[But as time wore on, Angel began to grow desperate and, even worse, fearful. It wouldn't be so bad if they had all returned to Ecruteak-- it wasn't as if she didn't know how to get back herself. But the idea of being abandoned didn't sit particularly well with her.]

The answer had been a lot.
It had been awesome.
Angel hadn't been in the Tower, of course; she didn't like to fight, so that made sense.
But that left him with no real idea where to find her. So he was left with no choice but to ramble around town to look for her.
It got so late at one point he used the fast-travel to swing back to Ecruteak to see if she'd returned to the inn. She hadn't, so he went right back to Goldenrod to resume his search. It was slow and frustrating - Goldenrod was huge, and it was entirely possible they could be passing one another without even being aware.
The longer he goes without any success, the more frustrated he becomes. Mostly he's frustrated at himself for losing track of her in the first place, and then for getting distracted away from his search for her. His frustration gives him focus as he prowls purposefully up and down the streets, grumbling and growling to himself as he goes. When he passes near the tower or the Pokémon center, he swings by directly to make sure she hasn't appeared there.
There are very few citizens still out and about, and they are all giving the obviously crazy man a wide berth...especially as he occasionally punctuates his frustrated grumbling with angry expletives.
Even if she doesn't see him, she may hear him.]

[Once she felt she was far enough away, Angel settled herself against the side of a building. She reached up, pressing fingers against her temples. A grimace worked its way over her lips.] unexpected places.
[Home, she thought. It's time to go home. She was exhausted, lost and beginning to hurt in entirely. She needed to rest, and with luck, she would find her allies back home.]
[It was only once she withdrew from her thoughts and pushed off of the wall that she heard the guttural grunts she had grown familiar with. Her head twisted, ears and mind desperately working to pinpoint the sound. Her feet began to move, even before she was entirely sure where she was going.]
[The alleys proved to be her biggest difficulty, as they always were, but even those proved no match, and soon she found herself staring at the hulking man she had been missing.]
Krieg!
{She crossed the distance between them, running despite the throb in her thighs and calves. She didn't hesitate to throw her arms around him, relieved to see not just a familiar sight, but Krieg himself.]

Ran in circles for hours, looking looking looking!
[He gives her a gentle squeeze - he's much better at "gentle" now than he was only a few short months ago - and pulls back slightly, placing one big hand on each of her slim shoulders and looking down into her face with concern. She looks exhausted, and he feels a stab of guilt.]
You, too?
no subject
Me, too. [Her nod was slow.] I'm glad I found you.
[Her hands reached up, placing themselves on his own shoulders, her own attempt at being comforting. She hadn't been the only one caught up in the fight, and while he looked okay.]
No one hurt you, right?
no subject
They triiii~ed!
[None of the Skulls he encountered tonight knew much about fighting other than what orders to give their Pokemon. In a contest of physical strength, human to Psycho, there's no question in his mind that he would overpower each and every last one.
His mirth is short lived, though. This close to her, there's no way he can avoid noticing the effort she's putting into staying on her feet. That realization snaps him immediately and thoroughly back to that initial stab of guilt, which then begins to twist in his gut just like a very real knife.]
You're safe and whole?
[He leans down just a bit closer as he asks, eye narrowed in concern as he intently studies her face for any sign of pain or discomfort beyond her obvious exhaustion. If anyone so much as looked at her funny tonight while they were separated, he wants to know about it.]

[As if sensing her thoughts, Mari let out a bleat from behind her. In the time that Angel and Krieg had spent together, the sheep Pokemon had laid down. Angel wasn't the only one who had tired herself out. The Mareep had kept up a constant vigil through the night.]
[But she knew by now that Angel was in good hands when with Krieg.]
I missed you. [Safe and comfortable as she had been with her Pokemon, Angel had barely spent more than a day away from the man. He was a beacon, a reminder that she was safe and in good hands. He was a reminder that, even if Jack was here, she was safe.]
[She hadn't quite realized how much that meant.]

I got too excited.
[It's a strange and uncomfortable sensation, to look back on his actions and to acknowledge that they'd been incorrect. He hates remembering the past, even just the recent past. What if the act of recalling one awful thing leads to recalling even more awful things?
We're going to have to remember one day.
He screws his eyes shut and shakes his head vigorously at the treacherous whisper in his mind, fast and hard, like a little kid. His hands grip Angel's shoulders a little tighter for just a moment - not enough to hurt her (never enough to hurt her), just enough to ground himself.
No. Absolutely not.]
I won't do it again.
[Is that a promise he can keep? He doesn't know, but he's going to try. She means too much to him - he can't not try.]
no subject
It's okay... [She did what she could to slide his hands off, better and far easier to clutch his hands. Either way, her thumbs rubbed along the rough flesh there.]
I promise, it's okay. We're together now. [She glanced over her shoulder, to the direction of what she assumed was the Pokemon center. Toward home.]
[Her gaze flicked back to him. She pushed her head forward, forehead booping against his mask.]
Let's go home.
no subject
When she leans up and boops her forehead against his mask, he giggles. It's an uncharacteristically quiet, happy sound from the giant, violent man, but that's pretty par for the course on this uncharacteristically weird night.]
Let's go home!
sorry if this is too open!
It didn't feel like it had been enough.
Assumption was tired, tugging on Walter's leg and holding his paws up like a child. Walter obliged, picking him up and carrying him as they strolled through Goldenrod, taking in the calm after the storm and basking in the weak sunlight.
It's perfect! Sorry, I accidentally marked this as read
[As it was, the sound caught her attention, and she turned to look back at the sheep, who was now staring at the retreating man. The Pokemon held her gaze for only a moment, before prancing off after the man. Not wanting to make a scene, Angel followed immediately after.]
[By the time the girl caught up to the sheep, out a few feet ahead of the man, her skin was bright pink, both from exertion and embarrassment.]
What are you doing, darli-
[Her response was instantaneous, a quick baa! as she turned to face the man. Finally, Angel turned to look at him. The man himself didn't exactly stand out to her, but the pokemon did. She gave the creature a curious glance, before turning her attention to the man once more.]
Excuse me... Sir? [Her skin burned hotter] Do you have a moment?

Assumption also recognised them but, lacking Walter's shyness, gave a happy cry and waved his bone to both of them in greeting.
no subject
[But the delighted cries of the Pokemon at her feet quickly evaporated her shyness. She knelt down, motioning the creature over so she could give it eager head pats. After the trauma of the night prior, she couldn't help but heap the affection on.]
I'm glad you're well, little one.
[Her expression grew a little more sheepish when she realized that Walter was expecting a response. She looked up at him with a small smile, before forcing herself back to her feet.]
I... believe we met last night. I just wanted to check on you. Both of you, really.

"I remember." Walter spoke quietly. "I- thank you. For helping us. When I saw your Mareep, I thought you were someone else." He had honestly thought it was Rhys. He was still unsure why she would help him when he got into trouble and they hadn't known each other. If it was Rhys he could at least understand that they knew each other, and Rhys was extremely kind.
"Are you...alright, after last night? It didn't seem like you were used to battling."
