[ Minfilia is almost a little too put together, as she transmits a video from East Area Three - she's in one of the many abandoned mining tunnels, holding a newly-used Pokeball in her hands. There's half an Audino paw on the camera, as well. ]

Hello. I've taken care of many different sorts of Pokemon before - but I believe I've caught one I do not know how to care for. You see, I often care for more... organic Pokemon.

But I have come into possession of a Revavroom. They are engine-like Pokemon, and I do not know if there is anything I should know about caring for them. I'm still not comfortable with a lot of technology, you see - and thus, I worry I will not be a good trainer to this new Pokemon.

May I ask advice?

[ Hesitation, before she ends the video. (Nobody needs to know her sorrow over losing her friends and love just before this trip.) And a half-cut off voice, her Common-speaking Audino-- ]

I've never caught a Varoom but I fought a bunch of them last month back in Johto in a swarm. There were a lot in mid-March flying around. I don't think you need to worry about mech maintenance with them. Like, they eat the minerals from the rocks that make their wheels. They're still Pokemon at the end of the day.

[ Years of practice! But Minfilia replies to the text quickly. ]

So letting them explore around caverns would be good enough... I simply don't want to make my new companion upset when we return to Johto, you understand.

Don't we all? At least Pokemon are fairly good at making their displeasure known. All you can do is play it by ear.

They are. It's been hard to get my home settled for them - I hope they'll be okay during the months we're away, as well. They're quite amazing creatures, though. If I may ask - what kind of Pokemon do you tend to care for?

Hopefully, they will be. I do feel bad leaving my Pokemon in the PC.

I try catch at least one Pokemon in whatever Route I end up in. But I favour water type Pokemon. My starter is one and I love the ocean. How about yourself?

That's why my Pokemon stay outdoors at my home - though, we've also worked out a way to communicate if I require one for certain tasks.

As for myself, I've found that I tend to favour more humanoid Pokemon. Type-wise, however, I've spread out and gotten many of different types. However, funnily enough, Revavroom is two types I tend not to collect. (Steel and Poison.)

I may do something similar once I have a place of my own. I've been staying with my daughter on the Sevii Islands when I am not traveling. Haven't really settled here yet.

I see. I have at least one of each type but I lack steel types too. Chariot, my Bisharp, is my only one.

You're a father?

Yes, I am. My daughter is in her twenties. Got married a few years ago in this world too. Her name is Jolyne. She's a gym leader.

Sort of. Sometimes he's very serious but most of the time he's just... well, he acts like a fool. Has a bad habit of poking others with his blades when he's bored.

Around my age, then? Make sure to cherish any time you have with her.

My Bisharp comes from somebody we both used to know, thus, that might explain his behaviour.

Seems that way. And I will. It's rare people get second chances.

I have heard some Pokemon act like their trainers if they spend enough time together. That might explain your Bisharp. Mine just amusingly reminds me of my friend that's never been to this world (maybe I'm just projecting).

Well, yeah, different pokemon need their own kind of care, that's true. And I've never trained a pokemon like a Revavroom before. But...

[Louie rubs his chin thoughtfully.]

For what it's worth? I think pokemon are always still pokemon. Like uh-- Okay, where I come from, we don't have humans, but we still have people. A person might be a duck or a goose or a dog, or whatever, but they're still a person.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, don't think of it as like an engine. Get to know the pokemon and what it needs like you would with any other one.

Sometimes, it's a bit of a struggle to look at them and think they're the same, isn't it? [ She's saying this as a statement, because. So many shapes! ] I wonder if there's anything that couldn't be a Pokemon, in this land.

Though, I also wonder if they may enjoy to aid with some form of machine.

I don't know if anything couldn't be one. I'm still not sure exactly what pokemon are, because "magical creatures" is too broad, and I'll never be sold on them just being "animals."

But that's all way more my brother Huey's kind of thing. Since he came back here, he's been even more into studying them.

...It must be nice that he's returned. [ Said a little quietly. Before: ] I suppose your land did not have a large variety of magical creatures?

We simply did not have machines that were not machines, but living creatures. We simply had... machines created by those who fought us, mostly.

[A bit of an eyebrow raise at the quieter remark, as he's not sure if he should pry. This isn't someone he knows well, after all, and it's not as if Louie's in the habit of getting into others' business.

The consideration ends up more or less forgotten, anyway, because--] No, there were a lot of them. Probably more than I know about. And I'm not an expert on magic anyway, but I don't know. It never seemed like there was a lot of common ground between something like a Terrafirmian and a murder pony.

But, yeah... I can sure see why that'd make machines new and kind of, uh, weird.

Perhaps the common point is that they can be anything...

[ But, Minfilia lets out a little laugh. ]

You should have seen how I was when I first arrived - I was terrified these phones were spying on us, for said foes! [ It's said light-heartedly, but Minfilia still believes a little. ] I'm finally okay with the teleporters. I did not think I'd even capture a machine-based Pokemon.

I kind of get it. Not the stuff about technology, from what my uncle says I've been glued to phones since I would grab his before I could even use it right.

[Louie gives a chuckle of his own.]

But I think it can be easier to think about things differently in a new place, right? Even if that can be difficult to change.

This isn't home, and thus, the... issues of home aren't here. Even if there's others. [ A little chuckle. ] Though I imagine it's harder for some other then others. Why, I've seen so many people who wouldn't have camped out before arrive.

Yeah, the outdoorsy lifestyle is its own whole adjustment... Not that I'd never camped before. I had definitely wished I'd never camped before, though.

But walking around to get anywhere for a while? That was new. I did not like it.

My best friend has an infernal motorcycle and he just puts oil into that. So, uh, I guess try that?

It would make sense, if they were playing around the mining equipment. Looking for some...

Do you think those... pit stops, I believe they're called? The Pokemon Centers of this region. Do you think they have oil? Perhaps I'll need to go to one in a few days.

Maybe. But that would involve going to a pokemon centre.

[The way Riz says it suggests he thinks that is a fate worse than death.]

They must be. They are staffed by those same 'nurses'.

Which means the conspiracy goes deeper than just Johto and Kanto.

And it would have begun after the time of Hisui. [ Said with a gentle nod. Does she believe this? Not really. But it is curious - so many who look similar. ]

Still, it seems the Pokemon Marts are connected to them in this region as well - which seems a bit strange.

[Riz's eyes narrow slightly.]

Not so strange when you think about what they seem to be doing. They are taking over all sorts of major services. First the health care and police. Retail could be next. Make it so all the money people are spending goes straight back into their pockets.

Um...machines need gas, I think? But Paliens cheat anyway, so food's probably okay!

[Shrug!! They have Not thought a lot about this.]

The metal type I have doesn't have any machine bits on her, though, so I dunno.

Yes... it seems many Steel-types aren't machines. And there are machines who are not Steel-type, such as Rotom. It's complex.

Well, Rotom's just a ghost that goes into the machine! It's different!

I've actually never had a Rotom, to be honest - then again, the ones I saw were often in machines, thus, I didn't know...

But it's strange that a machine like a Revavroom is Steel-type, yet possessing a machine does not make something Steel-type. I've grown to understand I... do not understand this world, even after a few years.

I don't either, I just know about 'em. And types are always kinda weird, 'cuz sometimes three types works but you can't have three types?

Still think just one type is dumb. [And don't get them started on Normal.]

The thing I do not get, [ Minfilia finally vocalizes, ] is the question of how these types were decided and categorized. Even in times before electronic devices, the types of this land were all known, as well as how they worked with each other.

And then there are cases where beings can lose their type, if only for a time. So it is both innate and not?
