[Papyrus leaves the gear to record, and engages Calibri in sparring. The pokemon seems quite into it, despite it's shy introduction, and is quite happy to try hitting his master. Papyrus dodges or blocks Calibri's punches and kicks until-!!! He gets nailed right on the nose! He's knocked off balance, and Calibri hops back, a bit surprised that he managed to land a hit. He can't focus on that long, because he begins to glow...and grow! Within seconds, there's a proud Monferno standing in his place!]

Y-YES! YOU DID IT!!!!! [Big hugs all around!] NEVER BEFORE HAVE I BEEN MORE PROUD TO BE PUNCHED IN THE FACE!!!!!

[He doesn't notice the nosebleed he's got. Maybe you should let him know? Or congratulate Calibri? Either way, there's plenty of merriment to go around!]

I'm aware of that, yes. I have two pokemon of my own that have evolved in such a way.

Have you been able to compare how much stronger yours get from battling other Pokemon, versus when you train with them? This seems like a much better method of training.

NYEH-HEH-HEH! OF COURSE, THE GREAT PAPYRUS HAS HIS OWN PERFECTED WORKOUT ROUTINE! IT'S A ONLY A MATTER OF ADJUSTING THE WORKOUT TO MY POKEMON'S ABILITIES!

What sort of workout? Is there anything specific that you do, or is it all just normal things?

So there is more to gaining 'experience' than battling primarily against other Pokemon. Excellent. This is another point in favor of my theory that it is tied to energy storage and expenditure in general, rather than simply one particular type.

WELL, IT SEEMS THAT WAY, AT LEAST FOR THOSE THAT FIGHT PHYSICALLY!

I suppose that isn't unreasonable. A Pokemon who fights primarily via physical attacks shouldn't earn less experience because it happens to be hitting a human rather than another Pokemon. It isn't as though the energy it produces knows the difference.
