I had heard quite about shiny variations in Pokemon but I didn't realize they could be quite this drastic.

[Cissnei sounds overly amused and as she turns her gear to focus on the newest addition to her team, it's obvious why.

The Riolu that hatched out of the egg she'd received looks nothing like the Pokedex entry. Rather than the normal dark blue coat, it's got a vibrant yellow one. The little pup doesn't seem phased by the fact that he's on camera, sitting cross legged next to Cissnei's backpack just staring calmly at his trainer and the gear.]

Are there any others that have this big of a change between coloration?

[Because honestly? She wants more terribly vibrant Pokemon in her party.]

Well, an ordinary furfrou is white, but the 'shiny' variation is black. I doubt you could get much more extreme a difference than that...

That's a fairly common coat variation in canines though. At least I'm use to that sort of change.

Blue to yellow? That's a bit more drastic if you ask me. [She grins a bit.] Entertaining but drastic.

I suppose, though there's often relatively little variation between individuals of the same species otherwise.

Though perhaps one of the more unusual ones I've seen is that shiny ponyta and rapidash, while their bodies are the same color as their ordinary counterparts, the flames that comprise their manes and tails are blueish silver instead.

I have noticed that as well. It's interesting how little some of the Pokemon vary. Given how different some of the climates are around here, I would have expected to see more adaptations.

The shiny variation actually sounds quite lovely. I'd love to see one in person. It may be worth keeping an eye out for.

...What makes me wonder is if Mareep are not simply dyed to have different wools when sheared. If having a pink one is seen as such a rarity...

That's a possibility. Though dying the wool could be part of the process as well. I suppose it just depends on how varied the Shiny types and normal types are.

They are normally supposed to be red and white.

I'd definitely say that counts. It's interesting that it goes from red and white to blue and white. It makes me wonder what defines the colors of the shiny Pokemon.

I suppose it could be the same thing that determines our hair colour.

[Which is... Armin doesn't actually know. That sort of thing, genetics and DNA and all, is not something they are familiar with in the world he is from.]

Is that what determines it? Back in our world, this sort of thing is unknown.

[Obivously they've noticed that brown haired people tend to have kids with brown hair, and everybody gossips when a woman gives birth to a child that doesn't look at all like the father, but what exactly causes that is still unknown.]

Yes, genetics are what determine the different variations in individuals and then their offspring if they have them. I'm not a scientist so I don't know everything about the subject but it is pretty fascinating.

No. And some are not as drastic in variation from their standard colouring. Such as Claudia.

Funny how some can be so vibrant in comparison to the normal variations while others are so incredibly subtle you almost can't tell.

It can vary with evolution as well, how much a 'shiny' differs from the norm. An unevolved Pokemon can have a drastic change in colour, while it's evolved form is less noticeable.

Interesting. So the colors don't always stay consistent.

May be worth trying to put together a study on. Just for curiosity's sake.

You should see the trouble they get in together. At this rate, I'm gonna start developing a fight-or-flight response to black and pink as a color combo just because of all the times I've gotten yelled at on account of 'em.

I can imagine. I got a Murkrow of my own recently and she is something else. I've never seen Reno follow orders the way he does when she's the one giving them.
