So, I need some help. Advice, actually.
[Noctis is seated on a dock in Goldenrod City, feet in the water as a Gyarados happily rests it's head in his lap. Said Gyarados is making a strange sort of purring sound as the prince strokes its head and seems to be having the time of his/her life.]
I have one more gym to take on in this region and I..kind of want to do it with a team of Gyarados.
[Don't any of you judge him!
Carbuncle the Espeon, who's the one currently manning the 'gear, let's out a twilling giggle that get's a dry look from Noctis.]
Shut up.
It's funny! You're the Magikarp Prince! Prince of Fish--fishy prince!
Carbuncle!
[There's more giggle and even the Gyarados seems amused, letting out an amused rumble and flicking it's tail in the water.
Noctis sighs and focuses on the 'gear again instead of the Pokemon behind it.]
A team of Gyarados. That's my plan. I found out that they can learn a lot of different types of moves so I taught fire moves to Cast, rock and ground moves and some electric moves to Dumpling, Levithan--
[The Gyarados resting it's head in his lap perks up with a pleased growl.]
--is ice, water and dragon moves. And then Pasta has some poison, steel and dark moves. I have one more Magikarp that I'm working with to evolve that I kind of what to teach normal type moves to. So I've got that all figured out. What I want advice on is items. What battle items would be good for boosting them all in battle?

Karp Squad! Karp Squaaaaaad! Badges f'r Karp Squad!
That's the plan! I figured it was time to give them a chance to shine. They've all been training really hard.
[Levithan lifts his head from Noct's lap when he hears Thida, rumble-roaring in greeting and striking a pose.
They're going to destroy the Blackthorn Gym!]

[She believes in them so much]

[Said Espeon let's out a twill from behind the 'gear.]
We'll show everyone!

Uh, lets see. I know a bit about battle items, but first... which gym are you challenging?
[It might affect how viable this strategy is. And also the items Noctis might need.]
Video;
Blackthorn.
[So a really big challenge.]
Video;
And to be fair, it's not like there are huge consequences to failing. There are many people who have been defeated by gym leaders before eventually winning the badge. If Noctis' gamble doesn't work out, there is nothing stopping him from challenging the gym a second time with a more traditional line-up.]
The Dragon type gym, isn't it?
I haven't challenged that one myself, but I know someone who has. If you want, I can ask what Pokemon they use at that gym. That might help figure out which battle items to get. Where you can exploit a weakness, it would probably be best to get an item that boosts the power of a certain type, but if no such advantage exists, you might best be off with getting an item that works defensively and aiming for a battle of attrition.
Uhm. If you don't mind, could you list exactly which moves your Pokemon have. Oh, and their levels too. That could be useful information too.
[Now Armin is On The Hunt. This is like trying to figure out a good strategy in chess now and he's in the zone. The strategy zone.]

I'd appreciate it a lot. I've been kind of avoiding this one until I knew how I wanted to approach it so I haven't really done much digging about it.
[He never did much digging about any of the gyms. Most of them he just powered through.
Reaching over to take the 'gear from Carbuncle, Noctis opens up a few other screens, switching to voice for the moment.]
Sure. Okay, so, Leviathan is level seventy three and he's got Splash, Bite, Leer, Twister, Ice Fang, Aqua Tail, Scary Face, Dragon Rage, Crunch, Hydro Pump, Dragon Dance, Hurricane, Rain Dance, Hyper Beam, Surf, Dragon Tail, Return, Ice Beam, Double Team, Blizzard and Scald. Dumpling is level forty-two right now and has Splash, Tackle, Bite, Leer, Twister, Ice Fang, Aqua Tail, Scary Face, Dragon Rage, Crunch, Hydro Pump, Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Rock Smash and Earthquake.
[A pause as he pulls the next one up.]
Cast is only level thirty six and has Splash, Bite, Leer, Twister, Ice Fang, Aqua Tail, Scary Face, Dragon Rage, Whirlpool, Flamethrower and Incinerate. And last but not least, Pasta is level forty and has Splash, Flail, Bite, Leer, Twister, Ice Fang, Aqua Tail, Scary Face, Dragon Rage, Crunch, Toxic, Spite, Iron Tail, Payback and Taunt.

[And what an impressive number of Gyarados, to fill up a whole team...]
Have you had the opportunity to visit the berry orchard in Pallet Town? Some of their fruits can help your Pokémon withstand supereffective attacks, or recover health if they enjoy its taste. Though those would be most effective with a more defensive strategy...
[Everyone else gives him crap about the Karp Squad. They just don't understand okay.]
Pallet Town..is in Kanto, right? I haven't actually been to the Kanto Region at all yet.
[The Karp Squad is obviously awesomeness incarnate. No doubt about it.]
Is that so? What a shame. In that case... I do believe the Christmas Market sells items that boost a specific type, but I've no idea how much they may cost. Still, it'd be a great boon to your Ice-type user in particular.

[he says as he's outside, bundled up, amidst the snow, tossing Cherubios into the pond, because just because it's cold doesn't mean that the Magikarps that have decided to stick around under his care don't get to eat]

Still, that'll be an interesting way to do it. What gym are you going for?

Only you, man.
[He's trying to contain his laughter, but it's impossible. Of course Noct would amass a bunch of fish Pokemon that evolve into a flying/water badasses. Prompto is honestly not surprised and he's not even judging.
If anything, he's happy his friend seems to have a great group of Pokemon he loves.]
Y'have anything named 'Nap' or 'Blanket'? That might be the only thing missing.
[Hey, he's got some named after food. If he's going by things he enjoys, the one thing missing from Noct's Gyarados team is one that's named for anything related to sleeping.]
[That isn't true. He knows other people know that Gyarados are full of potential.
But everyone dismisses Magikarp and that's not cool.]
No! Hey, I'm not that lame, thank you very much!
[He's trying not to grin as he says it, rolling his eyes playfully.]
I may not have the best naming scheme but it's better than naming them after my hobbies.
Ya sure about that buddy? It's not like your lameness is a bad thing. [Hell, they spent many days and nights bonding over one or both of them being total nerds.]
Your naming scheme is kinda fun though. You've got a good mix goin' on.
With names like Carbuncle, Iggy, Amicitia, and Crowe n' then all the food names, pretty clear you're naming them after things you like. S'totally lame.
[His smile indicates that it's lame in a good way.]
Which is why it totally makes sense for you to name something after sleeping.
