i've never used anything but a regular ball before. i thought they were just
gimmicky or something. do they actually work?

The easy way is to forget about catching one and finding a breeder who sells the eggs.

The hard way is putting it to sleep with a really quick Pokémon.

The crazy way is to gamble at the Game Corner until you have enough coins to win one but not enough money to feed it.

1 is a total cop out, 2 is valid, 3 sounds like a great way to go bankrupt
the only one i've got who could do the job is my exeggutor
i've never particularly seen her move fast tho. she just sorta lumbers around tree-like

The Pokémarts sell items that can make Pokémon faster, but I'm not sure how many you'd need to make an Exeggutor faster than an Abra.
Probably enough to match option 3 in bankruptcy potential.
Paralysis might work too, but only about one time out of four.
