[Snake is now just staring and stepping back out of the way of DD, who is now glowing very brightly. The old soldier squints with his only good eye and puts both hands in front of his eyes. Damn, the light is bright! What the hell is going on?]

-DD? What's happening?-

[Snake puts his hands down from his eyes and notices the change. Oh god. DD.....what's happened to you, buddy? Instead of a Poocheyna standing in front of his owner is a Mightyena. He's a bigger dog. Snake is speechless.]

You changed? Evolved? Fancy light show, huh? You ok, boy?

[He pats his new dog, which is bigger and now looks more like a wolf than before. DD growls softly, still unsure about his new body but soon sits and wags his tail, before looking up to Snake, licking his hand.]

Good dog. Huh. Never thought evolution would be so bright. Anyone else had this happen to them? Hope you still fit in your Pokeball, buddy.

[To be honest Snake never knew what evolution would be like. Now he knows. Would he still be like the old DD like before? Or would he be more aggressive and harder to train?]

It's this bug thing, on Pandora. Starts off small-ish, but it mutates in a matter of minutes. By way of a fleshy, oozing pod. Gets bigger and looks a little different.

With all the other shit they do, that doesn't seem too weird.

Pandora's the planet I'm in charge of. And it's pretty much nothing but disgusting, freaky animals that want to eat you. Or dissolve your flesh.

Congratulations; the first is always the most impressive, no matter how many you'll see later. Your dog should be fine, though getting used to his new size might take time.

He's like a large wolf now. Impressive coat though. Just hope he doesn't become feral like my friend's Houndour.

Such behavioral changes are the exception, rather the norm; he should still be the same puppy you met at heart. If anything, he might even gain more maturity and wisdom from the experience.

Maybe he'll learn some new powerful moves soon.

Even the moves he already knows should be much stronger now. Few species change specialties when they evolve, so their preexisting talents only improve.

The wrap should be stronger now then. Hope he won't strangle me if he slides around my neck. [Yeah. That could be bad.]

Even if he does at first, I've no doubt he'll stop if you ask nicely. He might not know his own strength for a few days, after all.

Well... that wasn't what I expected.

Evolution is completely the wrong word for what just happened there.

[It's the only way he could have put it but he's happy with the outcome. DD looks more....wolf-like? Bigger. More like the dog he has back at Mother Base. DD looked up at Kaz, walked over and nuzzled his good hand.]

[Kaz gives DD a good scratch behind the ears, still looking thoughtful. Havoc is away for now, and thus doesn't offer any growls over another Pokemon being too close to his trainer.]

The best guess I've got is epigenetics-- maybe once a certain set of conditions are met in the animal's environment, the outward expression of its genes changes. Something new is switched "on" to trigger the evolution.

Still doesn't explain the glowing.

Epigenetics, huh? Could be. It's pretty mucked up though.

Oh. That's just an evolution, yes. It took me a bit to see my first one of those, since the first two Pokemon I got... one doesn't evolve at all, and the other needs a Fire Stone to evolve.

They should still fit in a Pokeball, though.

A Fire Stone? You need certain stone to evolve them?

[He hadn't read far into the handbook for that.]

Is it a stone on fire you give to a Pokémon? Sounds dangerous.

No, I think it's just red. And some Pokemon evolve with different evolutionary stones. I don't know if it's a certain kind of radiation or... something... but it does make them evolve

... She just seems happy as she is, so I don't want to make her evolve if she doesn't want to.

Wonder if any of my Pokémon will need a stone to evolve. Know where to get these stones?

Goldenrod Department Store is probably the easiest... though they're fairly expensive.
