It's a pretty impromptu thing. Now that they've retrieved Jane from the horror of having to walk all the way through the early routes, their party's up to six entire people, which is the most any of them have been likely to have hung out with in...ever, basically. Jane doesn't even know anyone but Dirk, she's that far back on the timeline. So what's the obvious plan of action?

BEACH. FUCKIN'. EPISODE.

There are big, colorful towels and big, colorful umbrellas. There is a picnic basket, even though the boardwalk is pretty much, you know, right there (they can sample Olivine's fine dining for dinner; for lunch, there's Hawlunchables). There are bottles of Lemonade and Fresh Water, AJ for Dave, and Soda Pop for Dirk, the godless heathen. There are plastic buckets and tiny shovels because fuck you, that's why. There's even a beach ball. No one knows who brought it.

And of course, everyone better have brought their bathing suits, because there's ocean.

Yeah. I'm still a way off from it. I still have a few badges to go in Johto, and I haven't been to Kanto at all yet.

Now, where is Kanto exactly? I haven't heard that name much, so I'm guessing not a lot of folks make a point to set up camp out there.

It's to the east of Johto. The ferry's expensive, and so is the train, so most people don't head there right off the bat. And then a lot of people just get comfortable in Johto, so they never go.

Well, I guess with this gym business, it gives you incentive. Perhaps the gyms over there wanted some more challenging opponents.

Yeah. I think they use a stronger team if you've beaten all the gyms in Johto.

Oh golly...I'm not surprised they wouldn't make it easy.

[wing_attack]

I guess it just means you have to think more strategically, but that makes it more fun, I think.

More fun...that's definitely a way to put it.

Well, I mean... it's no fun just to stomp all over someone. Once or twice, maybe, but not all the time.

Oh no, I don't mean it like that - and doing that isn't exactly fair or kind. I just never expected there to BE that much of a rise in challenge.

Oh. Yeah. There's kind of a 'max level' that Pokemon can get to where they don't get any visibly stronger. More experienced, but...

But it's a physical limit, you mean?

[wing_attack]

It looks like it, at least?

Alright, then. It's not like it doesn't make sense - humans hit physical limits. Why not Pokemon?

I guess so. It at least gives me a chance to swap around my Pokemon.

Out of curiosity, how many do you have? Non-birds included, of course.

... Fifty two, I think. Though I have two Munna and five Spritzee. I also have a Noibat as well as a Noivern and a Clauncher as well as a Clawitzer, but I think Murasaki and Felix don't want to evolve.

That...that's pretty incredible, but I'm assuming the ones with relating names are in the same sort of family?

Yeah. The former ones evolve into the latter.

Ah, that makes sense. I'm still learning about all the new ones I've never seen before.

Yeah, there's... a lot of them. It's hard to keep track of so many... but I guess that's what the Pokedex is for.

I guess it's one good thing that came out of this entire world being crazy about Pokemon, huh?

[wing_attack]

One of them, yeah. It's... actually kind of fun, seeing what you can discover about the Pokemon with you.
